We are an intermediate classroom in an elementary school in British Columbia, Canada. We use our blogs as a place to practise expressing our ideas in writing (and maybe even sound, pictures & video when we're ready). We try to leave thoughtful comments for classmates & other bloggers we visit. Comments help us critique our ideas and our writing. They also motivate us to do more thinking, writing, sharing & revising. You can leave your thoughts on any particular article by clicking "comment" below it. Comments will be published after I have had a chance to read them.

Young at Heart Chorus

Article posted June 27, 2011 at 03:22 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1053

In class we watched a movie about Yong at Heart Chorus. Young at heart Chorus is a chorus with average age of 80. You would probably expect that they will sing slow songs, but actually they were singing rock songs.

I think the chorus is amazing because many people at the age of ~80 aren’t doing a lot of singing or those kinds of activities, the people in the chorus could do the same and stay home all day, which would be acceptable. But instead, they joined this chorus, Young at Heart Chorus, which doesn’t sing slow, old songs, but rock songs that a lot of people know. For example “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, and “I got you (I feel good)” by James Brown.

I think the chorus shows good example that no matter your age, you could do whatever you want.

Time Balance

Article posted April 29, 2011 at 05:30 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 190

This week’s article is about balance. The word balance has many different meanings, all those meanings are divided into two groups, one is physic balance (the hockey player balanced on ice), and the second one is mental balance (you need to learn how to balance your time). I want to talk about mental balance. But there a lot of things that go in “”mental balance” so to be more specific, I want to talk about balancing your time. Balancing your time helps you to keep all your time organized, to make each activity equal, or not equal to the other (for example if you spend half an hour on homework, and half an hour on watching TV you balance the hour equally. If you watch TV for fifteen minutes and do homework for forty five minutes the hour is imbalanced). I think it’s really important to balance your time right because then you get to finish more things, have more fun, and not worry that you don’t have enough time to do something. Sometimes balancing your time is hard because your feelings change, and if, for example you are tired and you’ll give sleeping a lot of your time it makes all your day imbalanced and then you have to finish something faster to get your time back on track. I’m trying to balance my time equally so everything will be “fair”, at first it’s hard to balance your time because you need to change this balance often (like if you have more homework, or something you really want to watch on TV) but after you get used to a basic time balance, you can change it and still keep it simple( for example if you have a dance routine and you know the basic steps for it, you can add more moves, and because you are used for the basic, adding those moves won’t be hard to memorize and get used to) . Balancing your time is important, and after you get used to a basic, is also easy to do, it saves time and saving time is good, so balancing your time is actually useful.

Today I was looking at a blog of a woman from Vancouver that stopped using plastic for one whole year (http://plasticmanners.wordpress.com/). After reading it I realized how much plastic people use and that basically plastic is worthless because everything that is made from plastic can be also made from something else. I think it’s a hard job not to use plastic for a year, but if everyone won’t use plastic, or at least use it less, we can all help to save Earth and make it “green”. The problem is how can we make everyone to actually care about the Earth? Personally I think that even if we use the most convincing way of explaining why we need to keep the Earth “green” and how we can help, some people will rather to ignore. But even if some will ignore, I think most of the people won’t, and if the ones who choose not to ignore won’t just think, and want, the Earth to be “green”, but like the Vancouver woman will do something about it, our planet can be “green” in only a few years. So basically the point is that our planet needs our help in becoming “green”, and we all want to live in a good environment, so instead of thinking about how we can help, start helping, and one of the first things we can do is to stop using to much plastic like we already do.

Money $ and music ♫

Article posted April 21, 2011 at 01:38 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 139

After reading the articles on this webpage http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/entertainment/makingmusic.html I learned that the reason for us listening to the same songs and knowing the same artists is that a lot of the radio and music stations we hear belong to the same group of people and those people let us listen to the same few songs. Those people give only famous artists to let their songs to be on the radio and music chanels so we listen to the same songs over and over again. Those people decide what we will hear, we hear it and even if first we don't like the song, it will get stuck in our heads after a while and we will start likeing the song after hearing it so much. So basically the people who own a radio and music chanels decide who will be the artists we listen to, and what songs we will listen to.

Responsibility

Article posted April 15, 2011 at 05:48 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 835

Responsibility. Have you ever heard a parent saying that you need to be more responsible? Or that you need to take responsibility? I’m pretty sure everyone heard it at least once. I wanted to double check what responsibility means so I checked in a dictionary; it says that responsibility is a person or thing of which one is responsible. It didn’t explain enough so I checked the word responsible; it means something within someone’s power or control. So, I think responsibility means being in charge of something, something that is under your power and control. Some of our responsibilities are for example to clean our room, do our homework, bring all our school supplies to school, and many more. Think how many things you are responsible too, and if you are not taking responsibility what might happened? Well, first, people can loose their trust in you they won’t give you interesting or any job at all (which is important), they will think you are irresponsible and might tell a neighbor which then might think twice before giving you any job to do. So being responsible is very important, because getting people trust with doing something is hard, and getting it again after you let them down already once is even harder.

In my school this month’s value is responsibility, I’m trying to be as responsible as possible, but it is hard. I need to remember everything and think about others. So being responsible and taking responsibility is hard, but after all it’s nice to know you took responsibility and succeeded doing what you were supposed to.

Electricity

Article posted April 12, 2011 at 01:55 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 123

After watching this video (http://www.nfb.ca/film/science_please_part_2/) I learned a lot about magnets and electricity. I liked the way they used pictures to explain how things work, and words that everybody can understand. The thing that I liked the most waswhen they explained how batteries work because people use batteries a lot and I was intersted in how they work. A questions I have is why is there electricity everywhere? And why negative and positive particles attract each other?

Science- Electricity experiments

Article posted April 5, 2011 at 01:56 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 134

In science we are learning about electricity. I like to learn about electricity because we use a lot of electric things on a daily base and it’s nice to know how it works.

Last class, when we were learning about electricity Mr. Milloy showed us some experiments and as homework we had to write an article about one of the experiments, and how we think it works.

The experiment I chose is: Mr. Milloy had one wire, one light bulb, and one battery. He took the light bulb and put the metal end of it on the top of the battery, then he took the wire and put one end of it on the bottom of the battery, and the other end on the metal end of the light bulb. The light bulb started working, and as long as none of the parts moved, the light bulb kept working.

I know that the electricity is in the battery, and I knew that electricity can pass through metal; the wire is made of metal so when you connect the wire to the battery there is electricity in it. The light bulb’s end was made of metal, and that metal end was connected to the top of the battery. The wire was also connected to the metal end. When the wire got connected to the metal end of the light bulb, all the electricity that passed in that wire from the battery went in the light bulb. It is important to have the light bulb touching the top of the battery because if it won’t there won’t be an electric circuit and the light bulb won’t light up. We have to have the wire because every electric circuit has to have at least 1 wire and 1 battery to work.

One question I have is: how do you get the electricity in the battery?

April Fools Day

Article posted April 1, 2011 at 05:35 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 170

Tomorrow is April Fools Day. In my last county we didn’t really “celebrated” April Fools Day, most of the people didn’t even know that there is such a day. This is my first year in Canada, and I heard that people here like to pull a lot of pranks on April Fools Day, so I can’t wait until tomorrow. Another thing that makes me want that it will already be April Fools Day is that some of my friends said that they are going to do something special and that I should be careful. Those are two reasons I’m waiting for tomorrow to come.

Ice-skating

Article posted March 18, 2011 at 12:15 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 181

Ice skating is my favourite sport. I like it because skating is faster than just walking, it hurts less when you fall, there are some games you can play only on ice (hockey, curling) and I like the feeling of the skates on ice. Sometimes I want that our streets and sidewalks would be made of ice, and then we can skate all around. There are some good things about it: 1. we probably won’t be able to drive on ice so it is good for the environment 2. People will be able to get faster to many places. There are also some bad things about it: 1. there won’t be many plants surviving in a place with only ice everywhere 2. Skating uphill might be hard and people can just glide backwards without wanting to 3. Skating is harder then walking and it will take longer time to learn how to skate then walk. So I guess that even though it can be fun to have ice around, we should keep it in ice rinks.

Snow

Article posted March 4, 2011 at 12:51 AM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 288

Hey. Today I want to talk about the snow, so here is something. I really like snow, but it doesn’t snow a lot here. And that is, for my opinion, GREAT.  It might sound weird that I like snow but I think it’s great that it doesn’t snow a lot, but I have good reasons.  My reasons are: 1) if it will snow a lot, I will probably stop liking the snow; it will get boring after a while. 2) The weather will get too cold for me.3) if it will snow everyday there will be too much snow, imagine going to school on a clean sidewalk, but around you there are white cold walls that might be higher than you. (With my height, they might).     And my last reason is when it doesn’t snow a lot, the few times it is, seems so perfect and magical, but when it snows every single day… all the magic disappears.

I admit it could be fun if it will snow more often, because, well, who doesn’t like building a snowman or have a snowball fight? I do, but I think I will get tired of doing that everyday.
