Pioneer Diary

August, 1874

Dear Diary,

My wagon train chose the Cheyenne River trail. I think that this trail is the really good trail. The good thing is that there is good water everywhere. Today my son got lost going picking flowers. Way back on the trail our wagon wheels fell off the wagon. A woman named Kathleen on our train got bit by a scorpion in the middle of the night. We sent scouts ahead and the Indians almost attacked us and our scouts because we were on burial grounds land. Also back on the trail there were these armed guys guarding the water at prairie wells. Some other people from our train fell into a fire and burned there hands. Nate’s son got bit by a rattlesnake when we were feeding the livestock. The next thing that might happen is I might get bit by a rattlesnake, because Nate’s son already got bit by a rattlesnake. I also feel real sick like a fever (I really hope there is a doctor on this wagon train), if we don’t I might die.

Sam Conrad

Sacagawea

Article posted February 19, 2009 at 07:25 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 133

Who was Sacagawea?

Sacagawea’s head is on the dollar coin, it got on in the year 2000. Lewis and Clark were expert explores. Sacagawea was born in the state of Ohio, in the year 1788. Lewis and Clark took Sacagawea exploring , I bet she had a lot of fun! Lewis and Clark looked like really good partners. Sometimes Lewis and Clark argued.

Sacagawea had three different names and there were Sakaga, Sacajawea, and Sacagawea. Sakaga stands for “bird”, and wea stands for “women”, so in the Indian language it is “bird women”.

Sacagawea had two brothers and one sister. One of her brothers’ names is Cameahwait. Sacagawea’s family loved to fish. They some times camp out by streams, ponds, and lakes. Then her family packs up and goes to Montana to hunt buffalo. Sacagawea died in December 12, 1812.

Sacagawea’s statue is in North Dakota. Sacagawea had two kids one of the kids name is pompy but his real name is Jean- Baptist. The other kids name is Lisette. Sacagawea died when she was twenty-six years old. For a lot of years Sacagawea’s name was spelt Sacajawea. Sacajawea stands for Boat Launcher.

Both Lewis and Clark met Sacagawea in Fort Mandan. A lot of important things in Sacagawea’s life right now are her baby, her home, herself, her kids, and fishing. I feel pretty good about studying on Sacagawea. One Sacagawea’s accomplishment is birthing her children. She was very important to the tribe, and her kids, I mean her whole family. Sacagawea was a ShoShone.

The deciduous forest is a cool and damp. The average temperature in the deciduous forest is 75f but it gets as high as 86f depending on the altitude of the forest. Deciduous forests receive from 2-5 feet of precipitation (both rain and snow) each year. The deciduous forest has lots of trees like large oak, maple, beech, chestnut, hickory, elm, basswood, linden, walnut, and sweet gum trees. The soil in the deciduous forest is quite fertile, since it is often enriched with falling leaves, twigs, logs, and dead organisms.
