Watch Your Language

With the changes that are taking place in the learning environments of the 21st Century, it is vital that students learn to express themselves through written communication now more than ever before. People are very concerned about the "problems" that new technologies present for our students. For example, chat rooms and text messaging are encouraging students to use a "chat style dialect" as David Warlick refers to it. He refers to this new dialect as something marvelous that teenagers have "created" without any formal instruction. It serves its purpose when used in that context.

Therefore, I would rather not be so concerned about this new dialect and its detrimental effects upon correct grammar usage, but rather focus upon teaching students to determine the appropriate time and place for the language they choose to use. Just as when we were kids, we learned that it was inappropriate to use our "slang" around our parents. Likewise, it is necessary to understand the importance of using "proper grammar" when appropriate. The use of chat rooms and blogs for written expression demonstrate the need for both. A blog, for example, is the perfect place for students to use proper grammar to demonstrate that they have "thought" about and carefully written the information they are "publishing" for others to read.

Librarian vs. Media Coordinator

Article posted September 21, 2005 at 04:12 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 624

Librarian, Library Lady, Media Coordinator...the title is rather irrelevant. However, it is this change in this title that is indicative of something of greater importance, and that is our ROLE. In an age when the quantity of and access to information is limitless, we must be willing to adapt to the technology-driven world in which we live. Our roles as information seekers and proponents of educational technology are going to be the driving force in meeting the needs of our students because they are most definitely immersed in technology. Therefore, regardless of which of the above titles you choose to use, it is quite obvious that in the 21st Century anyone opposed to change may be in the wrong profession.
