Hello everyone! This weekend marks the first long weekend of the summer season. Your Friday Writing question is simple, What do you plan on doing during your summer vacation? The last two summers I have attended university classes, so I am looking forward to relaxing by the pool and soaking in the sun.
Please tell me what you are planning to do this summer vacation. Have a great weekend.

Good morning and welcome to another addition of Friday Writing. I hope that you enjoy putting your thoughts down and have other people reading your work. I think it is important you edit your work before you post it, because your work represents you. The other teachers and students only know about you by your pseudonym and the words you post on your blog.
The Canadian Mint has announced that the "penny" will no longer be manufactured in Canada. Apparently, it cost more to make each penny than a penny. Goods and services will know have to be rounded or estimated. You might have to pay more for your new jeans than the price tag. Please, write a paragraph discussing the loss of the one cent coin. Will it make a difference in your life? Please give me your "two cents".

It is my turn for Friday Writing. Thank you Ms. Brown for keeping track of our order. I would like to say I am impressed with the efforts of all the citizens of our Friday Writing Community. I would like to encourage everyone to comment and respond to postings. If you don't understand something in a post or you have a question you would like answered.....ASK! Let's try to develop a conversation: a sharing of ideas....
Friday Writing today is a poem! Write an acrostic poem about SPRING?
If you don't want to write one about spring .....maybe you could write an acrostic poem on your blogmeister name.
Give it a try......

Welcome to Friday Writing. The weather in Saskatchewan has been extremely cold. For your Friday Writing assignment please write about what you like to do for winter fun. What do you like to do on "snow days"?
Personally, I like to curl up in a chair with a good book and escape.
What do you like to do?
Have a warmer weekend......

Living Sky School Division promoted Education Week as Social, Messy & Fun. In my classroom, we began making representations of our favorite book covers. We cut, drew, traced and laughed as we covered our door with a list of our favorite stories. Is your favorite book listed in the slideshow? HAPPY READING!

Please take a few moments and check out their blogs. Make sure to leave a comment! It is nice to receive comments. I will let you all in on a little secret…..their teacher’s name is Mrs. Ellis. This weekend is a long weekend. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what you have. What are you thankful for in your life? Think about this. In your paragraph, write 3 main ideas and then support those ideas by giving me some more details about your main ideas. I am looking forward to reading a well thought out paragraph.
Have a great Thanksgiving,

Bullying is a big problem in society.
We have all heard that we should stop bullying when we witness it. All people should be able to feel safe and free from ridicule.
The following video is a flash mob at North Battleford Comprehensive High School.
Brainstorm ideas of how to stop a bully from picking on someone. How do YOU make a difference. Write a paragraph on ways to stop a person from being bullied.

Welcome to Friday Writing. Each Friday you will find a writing prompt either posted here or on Ms. Brown's blog. (You can get to Ms. Brown's blog by clicking the Haultain Community School link at the left) These writing assignments are meant to be fun while improving your writing. Ms. Brown and I hope you will take a moment and read some of the responses of your peers. Please take the time to comment on another's blog. Make sure your comments are respectful and appropriate.
As a society we are concerned about our health. We are concerned about obesity in Canada. Some documentaries have warned people about eating too much fast food. (Supersize Me) Please write a paragraph about nutritious food. What is your favorite nutritious food? Why is it important to eat healthy? Why is maintaining proper weight a good idea?
I have included three different questions to get you thinking.
Stop and think! Brainstorm some ideas then pick some main ideas for your paragraph. Try to organize yourself by making a plan before you write your paragraph. (It will make it easier and your paragraph better to read) You are writing to inform.
I look forward to reading your writing Haultain students.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Cooks Brooke is a poem written by Al Pittman. The poem is about kids spending their summer diving into the water at Cooks Brooke. The full text of the poem can be found in the Crossroads anthology published by Gage.
Why does the speaker feel that "it would be better to die/skull smashed open in the water/than it would be to climb/backwards down to the beach?"
Peer pressure is strong. Stop and think!
Have you ever felt like this? What were the circumstances?
Write a paragraph in response to these two questions.

On January 12th, Connaught School attended the ceremonies to welcome the Olympic Flame to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. The school was all decked out in matching touques. Do you know the word touque? Anyway, we we waited for former Olympian, Canadian silver medalist, and former North Battleford resident, Fiona Smith-Bell to light the Olympic cauldren. After the celebration, we lined the streets and waited for Connaught School's grade 8 teacher, Roxanne Reynoldson, to arrive with the flame! How exciting for Ms. Reynoldson! How exciting for us! It was great to see the Olympic flame!

Every family has some sort of Christmas tradition. My Grandparents were married on December 24th, 1912. Wow, that was 97 years ago! Anyway, when I was growing up, ever Christmas Eve the family gathered at my Dad's parent's house to celebrate their anniversary. I must say it wasn't all that much fun. I am the youngest in my family by eight years. At Grandma and Grandpa's I always got a box of chocolates. Every year a box of chocolate. No toys! When I look back upon my youth, I miss my Christmas box of chocolates.
What is ONE of your families traditiions?
Have a great weekend and Merry Christmas to all

Wow! Winter has descended upon Saskatchewan with a vengeance! We woke up on Monday morning with the temperature thirty six degrees below zero. (-36). To add insult to injury, the wind was blowing increasing the freezing temperatures to more than minus forty. (-40). Looking at our map, there are some people who have never experienced this extreme cold. Saskatchewan is an interesting place. The temperature can range from thirty degrees above zero to thirty below zero. That is a change of sixty degrees Celsius!

It was a typical Saskatchewan spring day. The sun was shining, although the wind still had a bite to it. The field behind the house was muddy as usual. Peppermint Patti, my three year old pointer, was anxious to get out after the long cold winter. For every kilometer I walked I swear Patti would put on five. She would work the field like a good bird dog. This zig-zag pattern would lead Patti a long way away from me. Inevitably, she would get out of earshot. I am of the opinion that she heard me. Patti, just didn’t care. In order to train her to come when she was called, I purchased a state of the art shock collar. The transmitter was effective up to a mile.
Anyway, as we returned, her paws were full of mud. I wanted to cool down after our strenuous walk, so I left her outside. The sun was beating in through our south facing kitchen window, making the kitchen extremely warm. I ran the tap water cold and had a cool drink of water. I filled a pail and placed it, full of water, outside the patio door. Patti was wiggling her stubby tail as the pail was set on the deck. She always tried to sneak past you into the house with her muddy feet, but this day I was too fast for her. With the water cascading from her bird dog jowls, her yellow eyes staring intently, her wet nose leaving a trail of dog snot on the patio door, Patti began her incessant whining. Man, could she be annoying! I removed the transmitter from my belt and headed down the hall out of range of the continuous dog whimpering.
Several minutes passed by and the whining continued. The volume and pitch constant. Suddenly, Patti’s volume increased and her whine became a howl. Not being overly concerned with Patti I attempted to ignore her pleas. Again, the high pitched howl was heard from the deck. This time I had to investigate!
As I proceeded down the hall I heard my 2 year old son giggling. I wondered, what was so funny? I rounded the corner into the kitchen and saw a boy and his dog. Not the typical portrait of a boy and his dog, mind you, but something totally different. There was Cary, standing by the patio doors wearing his little nike running shoes, denim overalls and red plaid shirt. His blonde hair obliterated by the sunlight streaming in through the window. His giggle had turned into a belly laugh. Patti continued to howl. Cary was on one side of the glass and Patti on the other. I glanced at the table and noticed the remote for the shock collar was missing. It was easy to figure out what had happened to the remote.

One of the hardest parts about writing is coming up with an idea. You would think it would be so simple to generate one, single, solitary idea. But NO!!!! For years I have received travel logs from students. You know the story, it goes something like this:
I went to my Grandma's house. Then we ate supper. Then we went shopping. After we saw a movie. Then we went to my Auntie's house. Then I played with my cousins.
Now really.....who cares?
Good writing focuses on ONE SINGLE IDEA!
Here is an example of some generated ideas:
How I met my wife
My son's first time on skates
Patty and the shock collar
Falling out of the hammock
Chicken pox '99
Fishing with Uncle Alec
Joyce and her finger
Grandpa and cheque day
White Gravy
All of these are rememberances of mine. As you read the list, would you like to know more about any of them? (Many of them are really funny)
It is time for you to put on your thinking caps and remember!
Your Friday writing assignment is to write a list of ten (10) single ideas.
Have a great weekend!

In Saskatchewan winter is coming. Faster than I would like, but I used to love winter. I would spend more time outside in winter than I would in summer. The winter has become long, dark and cold. The thoughts of -30 degree weather makes sad.
If I think really hard, I can feel the sun warming me up in the middle of summer. Oh how I love the summer! Long bright days followed by warm summer nights. The smell of meat searing on the barbeque. the crackle of a roaring fire.
For your writing assignment:
"What's your favorite month? Write about what makes your favorite season your favorite season."
Have a great weekend,

At Connaught we have been discovering the atrocities mankind has inflicted on each other. So far we have read about Serbia, Rwanda, The Killing Fields of Cambodia and the Holocaust.
Yesterday we finished reading a book entitled "Hana's Suitcase". This is an extraordinary book about a Japanese woman who is bound and determined to teach Japanese children about the Holocaust. She, with the help of some children, uncover the tragic story of a young girl.
Your Friday Writing is simple. You students are the future of the world. How can humans learn to tolerate and understand others in the world that are different than ourselves. How can the world live in peace?
Have a great weekend.

My response to her assignment is as follows:
I think I would like to meet my Grandfather when he was a young man. I only met him when he was old and wise. What would he have been like as a brash, impulsive teenager? I have a feeling that we would have got along very well.

While I was growing up in Regina, my friends and I spent our summers painting houses. We were lucky enough to get a job east of Regina painting a large barn and all the buildings. Since it was quite a distance from the city, we took a camper and stayed in the farmyard. For those of you not familiar with southern Saskatchewan, it is extremely flat. The theme song from Corner Gas does have it right..."my dog ran away, it took three days". Anyway, each night we would climb onto the roof of the barn and watch the sunset. Saskatchewan has great sunsets! After the sun set, we would attach ourselves to harnesses and repel down the barn to the ground. I must admit I am afraid of heights! I got very scared and nervous every night dreading the repel down to the ground. But, all my friends did it. I really just wanted to take the ladder! Every night I was afraid and every night I repelled down the barn.
Now for your Friday writing assignment.
Think hard!
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you were afraid or knew what you were doing was wrong and went along with the group because it was just easier?
Think about this carefully!
Be descriptive and tell us all about you experience. Remember, this is YOUR story, tell us everything about it!
I really am looking forward to reading your stories.
Have a great weekend!

Many of us as children have told our parents we NEED a certain toy or we NEED to have these particular brand name pair of pants. As teenagers you believe you NEED everything. Most of you can put forward a pretty good argument. Why you do NEED these items? From my own experience, one of the the ever popular responses was ..."All my friends have one".
Having grown up in North America our perspective is different. Most Canadians have not suffered the way people from other countries have. Poorer nations needs are immediate and their survival depends upon them. Our needs do not depend on our very survival but on our social status within our communities.
In future, think about your NEEDS verus WANTS. Do you need something for your very survival or is the item something you just WANT?

Empathy is an important ability. It is essentially the ability to understand another person's situation. Being able to "put oneself into another's shoes" is truly an important part of being human.
Can you feel how another person does when they skin their knee?
Do you have the ability to understand someone's feeling when a family pet dies?
Do you understand the feeling a person has when a surprise party is held in their honor?
Read these three question again. Think about your answers to these questions.
Now, how do YOU know how these people feel?
Write a paragraph explaining how you can understand another person's feelings.
I hope you all have a wonderful spring weekend!!
Mr E.

Lance Mackey won the Iditarod race! I think race strategy is as important as a great group of dogs!
I hope that everyone learned something about: Something about the past...the reason for the Iditarod.
Something about Alaska...the geography.
Something about dog sled racing.
Something about the other students who worked on the project with us!

My Grandmother was a great lady! She lived to be one hundred years old. She was born before Saskatchewan became a province. Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. Grandma Sarah was born in Broadview, North West Territories in May of 1900. She died in June of 2000. She lived for 100 years and 1 month, or 1201 months, or 36,531 days, or 876,744 hours.
Now, what is the point of all this rambling?
When Sarah was born, automobiles were not a popular mode of transportation. The horse and carriage was common. It was a few years later when the Wright brothers flew the first airplane. When Sarah was fourteen years old, World War I broke out in Europe. The roaring twenties brought prosperity to North America. The stock market crash of 1929 stopped the world in it’s tracks. The depression of the thirties was a time of great hardship across both Canada and the United States. The rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany dominated the 1940s when the world was once again immersed in war. Peace and prosperity returned during the fifties. Airplane travel increased. Toward the end of Sarah’s life, she witnessed: computers, cellphones, internet, digital cameras, man walking on the moon. What a list of changes during one woman’s lifetime!!
Okay, I’ll get to the point…..
Your lives have just started. If you live to be one hundred years old, what changes will you witness in your long lifetime? Try and focus your writing on one specific thing. Tell Ms. Brown, Ms. Fisher and myself what your world will be like in your future.
I hope you enjoy this assignment! You should be able to use your imagination and have some fun.
Have a great weekend!

We have completed the second section of "The Environmental Unit". You must take the time and reflect upon the selections that we read. The question you need to try and answer is:
What is wrong with the Earth?
Now, I realize this is a big question, but from the pieces we read, you should be able to begin to form some individual opinion.
Complete your web containing your ideas and write a paragraph concentrating on the above question. Don't forget to refer to ideas in the reading material. Before you upload this to your blog, print off a copy and show it to me. Thanks.

For the second year we are participating with other schools in the Iditarod project. You have been placed into groups with students from other schools.
You and your partner should write a short introduction, introducing yourselves to the other students in your group. All your assignments will be placed into your group's folder. Remember to stay on task. Try to learn something and above all have fun.

Good Friday to you!
I realized when I got to school this morning that it was my turn for Friday writing. I have been thinking about the Iditarod project. I can't wait to get started.
I was wondering what you students think about working in groups with people from other schools in other cities and countries. Write a short paragraph telling what you think of working with students from other classrooms.
I think it is a great opportunity to express your opinions!
Have a great weekend!

You thought I forgot the Friday writing assignment! You were only partially right! I did remember, but then I had to get the shovel out early this morning. The snow will stay for the winter.
I was thinking about how I loved the first snowfall of the year when I was young.
What do you think of the first snowfall of the season?
(I know in Regina that you have already had a winter storm, but here in North Battleford the ground has been brown.)
Remember to create a mental picture, so Ms Brown and I can see what it is you are trying to communicate!
Have a great weekend!

Ms Brown has a unique writing assignment for you this week. Man has often imagined what it would be like to live "under the sea". Go to the Haultain blog and think about the questions Ms Brown has posed to you. Generate a clear response to each question. Make sure you keep your ideas specific, (try not to get off topic and ramble). Also remember to show the reader what it would be like..DO NOT TELL!

Canadians have made themselves known in the world through their acts of courage and heroism. During World War I, Canadians led the allied armies into Germany. During World War II, Canadians stormed the beaches at Normandy and fought throughout western Europe. Our next great role in war occurred in Korea. Many of the men who fought in these battles and survived are now gone. Today we have soldiers fighting and dieing in Afghanistan. It is important that we remember the sacrifices of these brave men and women.
Your Friday writing assignment is to create a poem remembering our heroic veterans.

Japanese climbers claim to have found the Yeti's footprints
Footprints found in the Himalayas were about 20 centimetres long and looked human
By Randeep Ramesh, Guardian Newspaper UK

A team of Japanese climbers claimed they have found the footprints of the legendary abominable snowman in the folds of the eastern Himalayas in Nepal.
An eight-member team claimed the footprints of the snowman or Yeti were about 20 centimetres long and were human in appearance. The creature's footprints were found on snow at an altitude of about 4,800 metres (15,748 feet) in the Dhaulagiri mountain range in west Nepal.
The scientific community said there is no proof of the Yeti's existence despite decades of sightings. "We saw three footprints which looked like that of human beings," Kuniaki Yagihara, a member of the Yeti Project Japan, told Reuters, after returning with photographs of the footprints.
The Japanese crew said it was their third attempt to track down the half-man-half-ape, which has long been part of the western adventuring folklore in this part of the world.
The team said they have become adept at recognising the various beasts such as bear and snow leopards and are adamant that the "footprint" was "none of those".
Although the climbers spent more than 40 days on Dhaulagiri IV - a 7,661 metre (25,135-foot) peak where they say they have seen traces of yetis in the past - they could not furnish the press with a single photograph of the Yeti. "If I don't believe in Yeti I would never come," said Yagihara.
Nepali Sherpas say the legend of the Yeti rests deep in the Himalayan psyche. Tales of wild hairy giants living in the snow are part of growing up in the mountains. These prompted many, including Sir Edmund Hillary, to carry out yeti hunts.
The Yeti is also considered more than a myth by the world of cryptozoology, the study of uncatalogued creatures, which takes seriously the idea that the alleged creature may be the last fragments of a race of giant man-apes that existed in central Asia more than 300,000 years ago.
There appears a global trading industry in sightings of the abominable snowman. Most turn out to be false. In July Yeti hairs were supposedly found in north east India. Upon testing they turned out to belong to a species of Himalayan goat. In August, two men in the US claimed they had found the remains of a half-man-half-ape Bigfoot, which actually turned out to be a rubber gorilla suit.
The Yeti of South East Asia, Bigfoot from the Pacific Northwest are sighted by humans. Do they really exist? Do you believe in the Yeti and Bigfoot? Your Friday writing assignment is to write an "Interview" with Bigfoot or the Yeti.
Mr. Ellis - So Mr. Sasquatch, may I just call you Sasquatch?
Sasquatch - Sure, my friends call me Bigfoot.
What questions would you like to ask the legendary creature?
Get creative and have fun!!!

The harsh reality of living in Saskatchewan must have been frightful to early settlers. The long days of summer quickly ripen crops. For farmers to get their crops off the land before the hard frost means endless days of harvesting. The anxiety of having a successful crop year or not having enough food for winter dominated rural life. It wasn't long ago that everyone helped everyone. Even with todays modern machinery, farmers help each other to get the crops off the land. Working cooperatively is truly a quality of Saskatchewan.
The people of Saskatchewan are a generous group of people. Helping their neighbors with any task is common place. Stopping alongside the highway to see if travelers need assistance is not done everywhere. Pushing a stranger out of a snowbank is common. Saying hello to someone walking down the street is polite. Supporting Kinsman Telemiracle for over 30 years has become an institution. Holding a door open so somebody might enter shows manners. These types of qualities are common in people from Saskatchewan. I am thankful for growing up in Saskatchewan and learning about these great qualities.
As we celebrate thanksgiving this weekend, why are you thankful?
Have a great thanksgiving!
Mr. E

When I was a boy growing up in Regina, I looked up to the Saskatchewan Roughrider football players. In particular, Ron Lancaster and George Reed. Many critics of Lancaster said he was too small to play quarterback. Ron Lancaster proved them all wrong. He dominated the game for many seasons. As young boys we played football out in the school yard at every available moment. There was always someone who pretended to be Lancaster or Reed.
Ron Lancaster's determination and drive are very similar to those of us who reside in Saskatchewan. We are able to identify with this man. Rider Pride is alive and well because of Mr. Lancaster. Ron Lancaster died on Thursday at 69 years of age. He was able to touch the lives of many people, especially those in Saskatchewan. I looked up to Mr. Lancaster and wanted to be like him.
Your Friday writing assignment is to tell us who is your hero. Who do you look up to? Why do you respect them. I look forward to reading about your heroes!
Have a great weekend!

Summer is coming to an end. All summer long, I ask my family what they would like to eat for supper. They never seem to give me an answer. It is always up to me to decide what I will barbeque. I love the flavor of food cooked on a grill. Your assignment for Friday writing is:
If you could have any meal for supper, what would you like to eat?
This seems very easy for a Friday writing assignment, but I would like you to use adjectives to describe your food. Adjectives are those words that we use to describe something more completely. For example, you could describe a steak by adding juicy, perfectly grilled, medium rare, strip loin.
You must also complete the menu. You cannot just eat meat.
I hope you all have a great weekend!

As we discovered yesterday, the country of Chile is located on the western shores of South America. Chile is a long narrow country. It is divided into four distinctive regions; North, Central, Lake District and the Far South. Most people live in the central region.
Chile grows many varieties of fruit which is exported to North America during the winter. Chile's growing season is the same as our winter. It is great because we can get fresh fruit during the cold winter months.
The fascinating Easter Island is also part of Chile. Many people travel to the island to see the huge carved stone statues.
Chileans speak Spanish.
Food that Chileans enjoy is called "Empanadas". Empanadas are similar to a pizza pop. We will be making these soon in class. Bring your appetite!

Thank you all for your opinions on last Friday's writing assignment. I believe that everyone has an opinion on this nuclear question. In the Saskatoon Star Phoenix this morning, the following article was on page 1.
REGINA -- A majority of Saskatchewan residents favour the idea of having a uranium refinery in the province, while support for a nuclear reactor located here also exceeds opposition, says a poll conducted for the Regina Leader-Post."
What I find interesting is the opposition to the location of the nuclear plant.
"However, respondents weren't as warm to the idea of Lake Diefenbaker as a location for a nuclear power plant, Sigma Analytics found."
I think we need to do some more investigating. Read the Star Phoenix article.
Have a great day!

The Environment
Home to all living creatures. Man has spent the entire industrial revolution using the Earth's resources. These resources are not infinite!
What are some things you and your peers can do for the environment?
I have given you several articles to read. Read and respond to these articles using your blog.
Remember, your audience has not read the articles, therefore, it is important for you to summarize for them. Then you should provide your opinion. Make your writing clear.
Don't forget to remain focused on the question!
Good luck on pursuing the environmental quest!

I found this article in the Regina Leader Post. I think it is a question that all Saskatchewan residents should think about. You might have to do a little research or have a good class discussion before you are able to write down your opinion about having a nuclear power plant in Saskatchewan.
Would you support Saskatchewan having a nuclear reactor?
leaderpost.com
Published: Wednesday, April 23, 2008
REGINA --An area near Lake Diefenbaker is SaskPower's preferred site for a nuclear power plant, according to a media report on Wednesday.
CBC News reported that the information is part of a consultant's report by Stantec Consulting Ltd. According to CBC, the consultant's report - prepared in February 2007 - says a power plant at Elbow, which is located near Lake Diefenbaker, would be preferable to other sites.
"Potentially, the Lake Diefenbaker region could be the site of a Candu 6 plant configured with two steam turbine generators instead of the standard 750-megawatt, single-steam turbine unit," the report said, according to CBC. "Plant output from this option would be split equally between Saskatchewan and Alberta."
Would you support Saskatchewan having a nuclear reactor?
Should other types of power production -- for example, wind power -- get more support?
What do you think students? It is your future.

For Friday writing you will have to visit Ms. Brown's blog page. I believe you should find the question interesting today. Ms. Brown asks many questions. Make sure you somehow work all the answers into you writing.
Remember....You must make the reader understand what it is you are talking about. If they have not read Ms Brown's blog, will they understand what you are saying? So, make sure you give the background information that is necessary for you reader to understand your opinion. Do I need to remind you about capitalization and punctuation??
This is a great question that Ms. Brown has posted.

Four point six billion years ago the Earth was born. Dinosaurs infected the planet for close to two hundred and twenty five million years. Human beings have only been around for about one hundred and sixty thousand years. One hundred and sixty thousand years is a very small amount of time in the lifetime of the planet. Since the industrial revolution, humans have been depleting the resources of Earth. How are humans going to survive? What is wrong with Mother Earth?
Write about:

As you read it is important to make connections to what the author is saying. The ability to understand "where" the author is coming from allows us to really understand "what" the author is saying.
Remember, there are three different types of connections we can make:
TEXT TO TEXT - Something you have read before.
TEXT TO SELF - Some experience you have had before.
TEXT TO WORLD - Something happening in the world.
It is important for your comprehension to be able to relate to the author. Making connections is the way to go!!
Mr E.

Haultain and Connaught students you should all be very happy with last Friday's writing assignment. I really wanted to rile you up with the suggestion of having a uniform rule in both school divisions. I believe I succeeded. Your responses were well thought out. Some of you were quite passionate about never wearing school uniforms. Wasn't that easy to write when you felt passionate about a subject? In the future, try and bring some of this passion and enthusiasm to all your writing.
Again, good job!

Todays Friday writing should get you thinking! Please tell me what you really think!
It seems that the Regina Board of Education and Living Sky School Division are about to pass a new policy for students in their divisions. It seems that both divisions want students to wear school uniforms. Each student will be required to wear white button up dress shirts and blouses, plus black dress pants for boys and either black pants or knee length skirts for girls. Dress shoes included! No running shoes.
What do you think about the new policy?
What would happen if everyone wore the same clothes?
I look forward to your opinions.

Ms Spencer got me thinking this morning about whom I would like to meet. The answer for me was simple. My Grandfather! I was named, James, after my father's Dad. I knew my Grandfather when he was a retired gentleman. I would have liked to have met him when he was a young man. Grandpa Jim served in World War I, with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He joined the army in 1915. Jim turned 23 on April 9th, 1917. This day was and is important to Canadians. Many people regard this day as the "birth of Canada". On April 9th, 1917, the Canadian army fought the battle of Vimy Ridge. This is the man I want to meet. How did war change is outlook on life? Were we similar in character? Would we have been friends? There are so many questions I want to ask him. Yes, I still miss his company. We spent a great deal of time travelling together when I was young.
You can hear my Grandfather speak on being in WWI Infantry at Canadian Veterans Affairs website. (The link won't work)

Well, it looks like the rest for Jeff King was taken at the right time. Most of the other mushers completed the Ophir to Cripple leg of the race in 11 or 12 hours. Jeff King rolled into Cripple 9 hours and 26 minutes after leaving Ophir. Strategy in a 1,000 mile race is critical!
Who is going to win this great race?

I wonder if the rest of the field know what they are doing? Lance Mackey and Jeff King, both previous winners of the Iditarod, along with Kjetil Backen have all taken their required 24 hour rest stop. The 3 men climbed from Finger Lake to the highest point of the Iditarod, Rainy Pass. From here it is all downhill. The three experienced mushers all took their required 24 hour rest break after climbing up and over the mountain range. Will this bit of strategy pay off for these men? Drop into www.iditarod.com to find out.

Good Morning Grade 7
Please check the Iditarod site and update your mushers progress. Write about your musher on your blog! If your musher has withdrawn from the race write about that! See if you can find out why they withdrew from the race. Pick a new musher to follow and track their progress.
See you tomorrow!

FAMILY FUN
When I dug the hole in the backyard I had no idea of the work involved in the up-keep of a pond. Now, many years later, it has become one of our greatest family events. Every spring the pond is stocked with new, little, fish. The bigger fish are brought up from the basement and dumped into the 1,500 gallon pond. The excitement comes in the fall! How many fish do we have? How much have they grown? Emptying the pond and catching the fish on a crisp cool autumn day is a family chore. Trapping the fish in a net leads to much laughter. It is amazing how big Koi can grow in a few short summer months. I am glad I dug the huge hole in the backyard as it gives my family tons of pleasure.
CHORES
At home there are many types of chores that need to be done. Some of these chores are done by parents alone, and some can be done by kids alone. Others are chores that are more fun to do with someone else. Think of a household chore. You can either love it or hate it! Develop a good paragraph on that chore.
REMEMBER
* 5-8 sentences including a topic and concluding sentence
* Use some adjectives (descriptive words) to describe your nouns
* Have fun with it!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the title of Steven Spielberg’s new film opening in May. Harrison Ford will resurrect “Indiana Jones” for the fourth installment in the series. I love Ford’s character of the athletic, academic, scholarly Jones. The locations, the action and the story lines all make this my favorite movie character. And, yes, I really like the hat! I cannot wait for May 08!
Now it is your turn………
For your Friday Writing:
What is your favorite movie, movie character or movie series? Please tell me why!

As we began the week, The Battlefords was firmly planted in the DEEP FREEZE! The weather was colder in Saskatchewan than Alaska. This week's assignment for the Iditarod challenge revolves around weather and safety.
Frostbite is a common term here. I am sure that anyone from Saskatchewan can relate to the bitter temperatures that will be faced during the Iditarod.

Write a 26-word story where every word begins with a different letter of the alphabet.
Here is an example:
Francis Xavier Zamonski heard odd noises downstairs. Everyone knew scaring the man was very rare. Usually perfectly quiet, John, Bob, Garth, Yolanda and I clanged loudly!

For your Friday writing, you must decide on three wishes. The first wish must be a thing. The second wish must be a happening. The third wish must be a place that you would like to visit. Wishing for more wishes or money is NOT allowed. These wishes should tell the reader a little bit about you. Think about them for a while and try to make them as interesting as possible..
You will be writing three paragraphs-- one for each wish. In the topic sentence of the first paragraph introduce your three wishes. For the rest of paragraph one, elaborate on your first wish. The topic sentence of paragraph two should introduce your second wish. The rest of paragraph two's sentences will elaborate upon this second wish. The same goes for the third wish and paragraph three. The concluding sentence of paragraph three should summarize, restate, or make a comment about all three wishes.

During our ELA class we were reading a play by Sue Alexander entitled "The Mystery of the Stone Statues". I wanted somehow to incorporate this drama into technology. The voicethread seemed like a good place. The cooperation of all the groups to produce their plays was excellent. The use of the voicethread allows the students another creative avenue to express themselves. Check out their work and PLEASE leave a comment! WELL DONE GRADE 7!

We finished off our quick look at Korea by attempting to prepare a South Korean dish called Bibimbap. This one dish meal was interesting to prepare. Check out my students blogs to see what they thought of South Korean cuisine. Thanks to my friend Douglas, from Seoul, who suggested the dish.

Using one of the 3 stories we have read in ELA, "A Giant Hoax", "The Phony Captain", or "Field of Schemes", create a newspaper article. Your article must include a headline, byline and where the story takes place. A picture will enhance your effort.

Dear Grade 7,
I was thinking. This internet web 2.0 is the future. Learning how to communicate with others effectively is going to be a neccesary skill when you begin your careers. ANY business job MUST rely on computer technology. Your ability to do it well will be your fantastic advantage in the job market.
With that said......
I am so proud of ALL of your for your ability to "catch on" so quickly! Your willingness and effort was AWESOME!
Now....
LET'S LEARN SOMETHING=http://
Sincerely,
Mr.E
