10 Books for 10 Weeks

Article posted July 11, 2009 at 10:02 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 5508

Here is what our lobby looks like at school. The fifth grade teachers have provided our classroom collection of books for the new fifth graders to pick from for our Summer Reading Program, 10 Books for 10 Weeks.

DSC00065

What To Do:

First ~ stop by and pick 3 Just Right books.

Second ~ fill out the form in the 3 ring binder that has your name at the top of the page.

Third ~ Read the books

Fourth ~ return them and indicate whether they were Easy(E), Just Right(JR), or Challenging(C) on the form in the 3 ring binder.

Quite a few students and parents have asked if they can read books from home or the public library for this reading program, and the answer is: YES! Absolutely! It's A.O.K.

We ask, however that if you get a chance stop by the school and fill out your form in the 3 ring binder.

What Will You Write About Today?

Fantabulous Writers,

Welcome to Writer's Workshop where you get the chance to practice and play around with words while writing about what's on your mind.

Here are the Strategies For Generating Personal Narrative Stories
1. Think of a person that matters to you, then list clear, small moments you remember with him or her. Choose one to sketch and then write the story.

2. Think of a place that matters to you, then list clear, small moments you remember. Choose one to sketch and then write the story.

3. Notice an object, and let that object spark a memory. Write a story of that one time.

Don't forget the Qualities of Good Personal Narrative Writing.

1. Write a little seed story; don't write all about a giant watermelon topic.

2. Zoom in so you tell the most important parts of the story.

3. Include true, exact details from the movie you have in your mind.

4. Begin with a strong lead - maybe action, stetting, dialogue, or a combination whcih creates a mood.

5. Make a strong ending - maybe use important actions, dialogue, images, and whole story reminders that make a lasting impression.

Once you are ready, you may open up Microsoft Word and begin typing.

Happy Writing!

Welcome back everyone! I do hope you had an enjoyable Spring break.

Homework for Monday Night

1. Read for 20 minutes and have parents sign in the agenda.

Possible questions to ask your child before signing:
- Tell me about what you read this evening...
- Who is the main character in the story?
- What is the main problem in the story?
- What words did you come across that you did not understand?
- Tell me about an interesting part in the story.
- Do you like the book?
- What do you think will happen next in the story?

The idea is to generate a conversation with your child about the books they are reading. When we talk about the books we are reading it helps us understand the story that much better. So, asking them questions will help strengthen their comprehension skills.

2. Math worksheet on Probability ~ 15-1 all problems front and back.

Thanks so much for all that you do!

Spring Break

Article posted April 20, 2009 at 03:49 PM GMT0 • comment (6) • Reads 607

Welcome back boys and girls!  I do hope you had a restful Spring break.  We have a great deal of work to accomplish over the next several weeks.  One of the projects that we have started in Science is our design of Eco-Villages that we will be finishing up.  In Social Studies we will begin studying the Causes of the American Revolution.  In Writer's Workshop we will revisit S.T.A.R. in order to help us revise our work.

What does S.T.A.R. stand for?  Leave your answer in the comment section of this blog post.

Also, I would like for you to take sometime to write a blog post telling us what you did over Spring Break.  You are welcome to focus in on one event or give us a summary of your time.  I will expect that you use all the tools effective writers use in your posts.

If you would like to insert a hyperlink to a place you have visited that would help your readers get a better understanding of your Spring Break adventures.  However, do be mindful of not giving out personal information.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spring Break was a wonderful opportunity for our family to come together.  Althougth I worked at my landscaping job for much of the time, we still found moments where we went to the park, rode our bikes until our legs burned, and hiked around waterfalls.

My kids are so excited when they get to the park, almost as if it were Disney Land.  As soon as the van door opens they are off and running looking for the first obstacle they will attack.  Gavin of course, heads straight for the tallest slide there is and seems to make many friends on his way to its summit.  Amelia on the otherhand would like nothing better than spending her day slowly going back and forth in the swing.

Gavin, breathing heavy after running over to the swings next to his sister, said, "Help me in to the swing daddy."  I raised him into the fantastic contraption and of course helped him build his momentum.  My wife and I were enjoying the day with the sun on our face and having quality time at the park when I looked over and noticed Gavin and Amelia trying to hold hands while swinging.  My heart melted and at the exact moment felt as much love as a proud daddy could feel.  Even though we didn't travel to far off distant lands it's moments like these that made Spring break memorable for me.

In Science these days I have been designing an Eco-Friendly Community with all of the latest Green Technology.   There are many tips and ideas on how to "Go Green," for instance in my community I have constructed the homes very close to the work areas so people can use their bikes instead of their cars.  This will help keep the pollution down and according to a National Geographic article it will also help our bodies stay strong and healthy.

Hello to All,

This week the students will be reading a Science Fiction book by Jill Paton Walsh titled The Green Book. It's a fantastic little book that takes the reader on an adventure through space only to land on a strange planet four years later. Once Pattie and the others land on their new home planet they are met with twists and turns along the way and their dwindling supplies won't last much longer unless they are able to solve the many problems before them.

There are corresponding tests online at our Blackboard site that the students will have to complete as they finish the assigned readings. They are welcome to take these tests at home or at school. If for some reason there is a problem accessing the tests online please let me know.

Homework for the Week
Reading
At least 20 minutes of reading each night with a corresponding parent signature.
Monday ~ Chapters 1 and 2 in the Green Book and take the quiz online.

Tuesday ~ Chapters 3-4 in the Green Book and take the quiz online.

Wednesday ~ Chapters 5-7 in the Green Book and take the quiz online.

Math
Unit Test on Wednesday
Chapters 5 and 6 from the text book
Coordinate Graphing
