Not much blogging here recently - the end of year overtook me and the class and we really did not blog at all. It is now a week from Christmas and we are on holiday. Thanks to everyone who has been reading and commenting. We will have some form of blogging next year so check back sometime in February 2009 !

Here is an edible garden at Fairhall school ! They had several of these planter boxes and the children plant and look after the gardens. I want to do this in our planter boxes so now I will get motivated and plant some soon !
A real feature of Fairhall school was the book work the kids did - it was super - and ours will be too ! (eh Room 5 - !!) They had ruled lines, neat linked writing and no scribbles or bent corners.
This afternoon we visited Renwick school. They are starting on some quality work just like we are at St Matthew's.
This is a picture of the grapevines that you see everywhere - rows and rows and rows of them.

Managed to log into the Renwick school broadband so here is a quick blog.
We have had a lovely morning at Fairhall school. It was great to hear about their learning journey and see their school which was very nice. I will post a picture later.
Hopefully everyone is doing well and having a good day

Today we left early and traveled by van to Wellington then across the Cook Strait by ferry. It was very windy outside with some rain. I enjoyed the trip across Cook Strait. very much.
This photo shows some of the things I saw as we left Wellington.
When we arrived in Picton we drove for half an hour and got to Blenheim and went straight to Springlands School. This school has 5 times as many children as St Matthew's ! We had a look around and learnt a little about the school and what it does well. It was a lovely school and the children spoke confidently. Here is a photo of one of the classes and this last photo shows some playground 'batons' the children build with !

We have been doing some awesome learning of our timestables. Today we started making some cards for the smartchutes. You slot the card into the opening and quicly say the answer before it appears. Speed and accuracy. Accuracy and speed !!

You may notice a reduced list of children's names on the right. I have made an editorial decision to remove all inactive bloggers.
We have been trialling blogging for a year and it requires much energy from the teachers which has not for various reasons been available. It also requires a 'wired' style of learning and teaching and living which is a 'not yet' !
The bloggers left are part of Room 5 and we will give it a crack in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your understanding.

Today Room 5 spent some time with introductory activities on ice. We used two ice balloons and poured water on them, trickled salt on them and also tested food colouring.
We then wrote some similes.
After the tests we set one ice ball in a bowl to melt while the other had a special trip. We'll let the pictures do the talking...

Here is a picture of Angus and Hayden as they sprint to the finish of their training. In two weeks time we will be running crosscountry at Mrs Pilet's farm. There are a few hills so we are training hard and we hope lots of Mums and Dads can come to the farm too because we have a special event for them !

The week is over but it started out chooky and ended peacefully.
Unbelievably a chicken turned up at school just before Monday's assembly at 10.00am. One of the children told their teacher that there was a chicken outside and ... ... so it proved. The best bit was that after the chicken had been safely stowed in a box it promptly laid an egg which was then eaten by the teacher !!
School finished for the week today and as usual we went to mass. Corban read the first reading for us and did very well.
A great week at St Matthew's !

Today we had the 2008 Quad sports. It was a glorious spring day as we walked from St Matthew's to Marton Park to play rugby and Soccer.
The teams both played very well. The Year 5/6 rugby team was in a tough pool but managed to win one game. The soccer team won all their games and only conceded one goal. It helped that there were no goal keepers using hands - it was feet only - and the goals were nice and wide.
Congratulations to both teams for a great day out in the sun and many thanks to the other teams for coming along to play.
