Visit to Washington D.C.

A number of school librarians from the Morris County School Media Associates visited the Library of Congress and U.S. Capitol as a guest of U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen on May 15th and 16th.
This slideshow will show you the highlights of our trip, including some pictures taken on the Capitol steps, the Botanical Gardens, and the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress.
We were able to view the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence, and a copy of a map of the world, created in the 1500's. We saw how rare books are scanned and made available to people on the awesom Library of Congress website: myloc.gov. Check it out!!

Author visit: Mitali Perkins

Article posted May 31, 2007 at 07:58 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1069

Our 7th graders welcomed Mitali Perkins with open arms. She traveled from Boston to share her personal stories of growing up between two cultures, while presenting a descriptive Power Point presentation that illustrated her talk. Many students had read her books, Monsoon Summer and The not-so-star-spangled-life of Sunita Sen, but after she left, her books flew off the library shelves even faster.
Ms. Perkins also spent two lunch periods chatting with our students, who felt comfortable enough with her to share their thoughts and ideas with her and their fellow students.

I love meeting authors, so I wanted to share the pictures I took at Bookfest, hold on March 3rd at the New York Public Library. Here I am with National Book Award winner M.T. Anderson, author of Whales on Stilts, The Game of Sunken Places, Feed, and Thirsty.

Welcome!

You know, I've been wanting to construct a library blog for many months, now, and I've been experiencing the same emotions that you feel when you're presented with an assignment that seems overwhelming. I didn't really get it, this entire blog concept.
Where was I supposed to begin? What was I supposed to do? Who was I supposed to ask for instructions to help me understand what I needed to know.
But, you know what? I persevered. I slowed way down, stuck with it, found the information I needed to help me get started, read all that I could to get a beginning grasp, tried things, made many mistakes, but, in the end, I succeeded, learned a lot of new things and got our library blog up and running.
Now I’m wondering why I worried so much and had such little faith in what I could do. Learning is hard, but it feels so good to succeed, and I learned so much in the process. Now I can’t wait for you all to join in and share your ideas and feelings, especially about the books you’ve read. This is a library blog, after all.
