Hi everyone,

We were fortunate to be chosen as one of four classrooms in our province to be part of a Global Citizen video project with the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC). Our class was selected as one of Saskatchewan’s school groups that are helping to create a more just and sustainable world through their engagement in meaningful global citizenship activities.

The criteria for successful nominees was to be a K-12 classroom creating awareness about global issues, demonstrating the promotion of global citizenship and an understanding of international issues, as well as to be available for collaboration with SCIC for the creation the video profile.

We were chosen on the basis of our involvement in community and international service projects such as supporting The Regina Humane Society, The World Wildlife Federation and our work with Project Love. We have also worked on a Peace Project with 47 schools around the world
http://globalpeacemovie.weebly.com/, a Civil Rights Project and we are currently part of a Geography Project. We have had guests speak to us about sustainability of projects and working in developing countries along with how Canadians impact the rest of the world.

Our goal this year is to make a difference in our community whether it be local or global.

Have a great day,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Article posted February 3, 2012 at 04:15 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1577

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another edition of Friday Writing and the month of February. Yesterday was February 2nd, also known as Groundhog Day. http://www.groundhog.org/ The reports were varied from the different groundhogs in North America. Some groundhogs saw their shadow meaning there would be six more weeks of winter and others didn't. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/02/100201-groundhog-day-2010-punxsutawney-phil-prediction-winter-text/

Your writing assignment this week is to make your own winter weather prediction. Do you think there will be six or more weeks of winter? What will the weather be like? What do you base your prediction on?

There is also the movie "Groundhog Day." Here's a link to the movie trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1957600025/

Have a fabulous weekend,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Article posted January 27, 2012 at 03:09 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1683

Hi everyone,

After an incredibly cold week last week we were rewarded with above seasonal temperatures this week. From Wednesday to Wednesday there was a 49 degree temperature difference from -43C to +6C. I think we live in the craziest place for temperature but I'm not complaining about the great weather the last few days.

This week Ms. Casey from Rhode Island is posting the Friday Writing assignment. Check out her blog on the blog roll on the left side of our web page. (http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=195166)

We'll be writing on Monday because this Friday is a day off for students. Teachers are at school for professional development.

Have a great weekend,
Ms. B

It's Cold!!!!!

Article posted January 18, 2012 at 08:28 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 3050

Hi everyone,

We've had a wonderful, mild winter but this week is more like our normal cold. Today the temperature has fallen to -28C but with the windchill it is more like -41C. Needless to say the students are not outside for recess because it's too cold.

Our cutoff temperature is -27C for staying inside. What is your cut off temperature?

Yesterday we had parents calling to ask if the school would be open today due to the cold. We answered that we never close which is true. Our school division never closes schools due to weather in case students show up they need somewhere to go. We also never have a late start to the morning. Everything continues as usual but parents have the choice of sending their children or not. How does it work where you live? Does your close down due to weather? Share your stories and send a comment.

We also would like to welcome Ms. Casey's students in Rhode Island to Friday Writing. We can't wait to read your blog posts!

Keep warm,
Ms. B

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the next part of the school year! I hope everyone had a good Christmas/holiday break and you were able to enjoy your time away from school.

I'm not sure who's turn it is to write today's writing assignment. I checked our partner blogs and decided it must be my turn.

Today I want you to think about your goals for 2012. What are some changes you want to make? What would you like to accomplish? Write a list of three goals for 2012 whether it is for school, personal or about your family. I look forward to reading them.

Have a great weekend,
Ms. B

Welcome Friday Writing!

Article posted December 1, 2011 at 11:38 PM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 8229

Hi everyone,

It's my turn to post Friday Writing. I'm not being as creative as Mr. Ellis but I hope you'll still enjoy your writing assignment.

I like to look at what important events have happened in history when I'm preparing your assignment. Yesterday, December 1st, was important because on this day in 1955, Rosa Parks (http://www.biography.com/people/rosa-parks-9433715) refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. This was a brave action by Parks. What is the bravest thing you have ever done? Be sure to include details about the event and why you think you were brave.

Have a great weekend,
Ms.B

Almost Friday

Hi everyone,

Report cards were sent home last Friday and parent conferences start tonight after school. Is anyone else having conferences or did you get your report cards?

We have just finished a unit about weather. If you check out the student blogs you will see vokis. The students wrote weather reports and recorded them on the voki then embedded the voki on their blog. The students did a great job so please check out their work.

What's everyone else doing in their classes? Anything new and interesting. Please share what's happening in your class and leave me a comment.

Have a great week,
Ms. B.

Hi everyone,

Today is the day that we honour the men and women who serve in our countries' armed services. We honour the fallen and all of those who allow us to live in peace.

Take time to remember,

Friday Writing

Article posted November 4, 2011 at 12:43 AM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 3922

Hi everyone,

I'm sure all of you are eating bags of candy, chocolate bars and other Halloween treats. My poor students, at least they think so, aren't allowed to bring candy or junk food to school. Is it the same at your school?

I was thinking about candy and found this writing prompt. Today is “National Candy Day.” If you could invent a new type of candy, what would it be? What would be the ingredients? What would it look like? What would it taste like? What would you call your new candy?

I hope you have fun with the prompt and I'm looking forward to reading about your new candy.

Have a great day,
Ms. B
