Welcome to our blog!

We are busy with Christmas plays and performances at our school. There are students acting and singing along with classes performing songs. What is your school doing for the holiday season?

We are still reading "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket. It's becoming really exciting and we can't wait to find out what happens to the Baudelaire orphans. What books are you reading?

We have school until December 21st then we have a two week break for Christmas. It's been very cold here and we have lots of snow. Tomorrow the forecast is for more snow and a high temperature of -8C then the temperatures drop to -16C. Brrrrrr1

Thank you for reading our blog and sending comments. We'll be posting more blogs after we finish reading our book.

Have a great day,
Kim

Hi everyone,
I can't believe that it's already November 5th! That means we've been in school for two months with only eight more to go.

We had a wonderful time working on the Monster Project. We read all types of monster books, did monster word activities and built a fabulous monster. Check out all of the finished monsters on: http://www.smithclass.org/proj/Monsters/index.htm

We're starting a new novel this week: "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket. The book is about the Baudelaire children and the unfortunate events in their lives. http://www.thesnicketcode.com/TBB.htm

We'll be blogging as we read the book. I hope you read our posts.

Have a great week,
Ms.B

Hi everyone!

We've been busy getting settled into a new school year. How are you doing?

We've also been very busy with the Monster Project. We've been working on monster activities and reading monster books. We've read: My Monster Mam Loves Me So by Laura Leuck and Mark Buehner. We've also read There are Monsters Everywhere by Mercer Mayer. It's been very fun. Our group has started working on our monster building project with each student in the reading group building body parts. Have a look at all of the Monster activities: http://www.smithclass.org/proj/Monsters/index.htm

Please read all of our blogs and leave comments. We'll make sure to answer your comments.

Have a great day!

Hi everyone,

I can't believe that it's been almost four months since I've blogged. In that time I've changed schools, changed jobs, traveled to East Africa and enjoyed some summer vacation at home.

My new school is George Lee School and my job is the Learning Resource Teacher. I'm so lucky because I'm able to work with students in grade 1-8 throughout the year. Right now I have two wonderful reading groups and some other great students to work with. We'll be working on projects throughout the school year and blogging about our experiences. The first project that we're working on is the Monster Project organized by Mr. Smith. http://smithclass.org/proj/Monsters/index.htm

Keep checking in to see what we're doing, reading about and learning.

Have a great day,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Article posted May 4, 2012 at 03:03 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 43905

Hi everyone,

I hope that you've all had a great week at school. My grade fives were busy working on a provincial writing assessment this week. I bet they're glad that it is finished. They had to choose a writing prompt, brainstorm ideas, plan, write a draft, edit and revise then write a final copy. It was a lot of work!

Your writing assignment for today isn't going to be as complicated as the grade five's was. It's been raining quite a bit where we live. This morning it was absolutely pouring and there are huge puddles that look like small lakes on the roads where the storm drains are plugged. My question for you is what do you like to do on a rainy day? I like when it's rainy on the weekend because my favourite thing to do is to make a pot of tea and read. When my children were young we would watch movies, play board games or play cards. It's also nice to have a nap when it's rainy. Those are some of my rainy day things to do. Write a paragraph about yours.

Enjoy your day,
Ms. B

Cold and Rainy

Hi,

We've a really crazy weather week in Regina. The temperature was 27 degrees celcius at the beginning of the week and sunny. However, the week has gradually gotten cooler to today with 5C with 61km gusting winds and rain. The forecast for the weekend isn't much better. What's the weather where you live? Is it nicer than it is here?

Make sure to read the students' blog pages. We've been enjoying the Friday writing assignments from our partner teachers. Today we were writing about the food we like.

We're also learning Kiswahili. It is an Eastern African language that is spoken in several countries. This is our favourite song and video:

Hi everyone,

Welcome to this week's Friday writing! March 2nd was Dr. Seuss's birthday. In past years we have celebrated his birthday with a Green Eggs and Ham breakfast, Dr. Seuss book and writing events.

Your writing assignment today is to write about your favourite Dr. Seuss book and explain why it's your favourite. My favourite Dr. Seuss book is "Green Eggs and Ham."

I also love when the Reverend Jesse Jackson reads "Green Eggs and Ham." http://youtu.be/PPxPciXcJvc

Hi everyone!

We've had a week break but tomorrow we're back to school. It will be a busy week. Tuesday we have and Outdoor Education trip called "Trappers Challenge." We are in the country for the day doing different outdoor activities such as: dog sled races, building fires, cooking lunch and playing games. It should be a great day! Les Voyageurs were trappers that traveled Canada during the fur trade and were mostly French or Scottish.

On Wednesday we are celebrating the Leap Year with "Leap into Literacy" with a book and bagel breakfast. I think it's going to be a great way to start the day! We also have our Celebration Assembly Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the academic achievements of our students during the month of January.

Hope you all have a wonderful week,
Ms. B

Global Citizens

Article posted February 8, 2012 at 03:13 AM GMT0 • comment (7) • Reads 5037

Hi everyone,

We were fortunate to be chosen as one of four classrooms in our province to be part of a Global Citizen video project with the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation (SCIC). Our class was selected as one of Saskatchewan’s school groups that are helping to create a more just and sustainable world through their engagement in meaningful global citizenship activities.

The criteria for successful nominees was to be a K-12 classroom creating awareness about global issues, demonstrating the promotion of global citizenship and an understanding of international issues, as well as to be available for collaboration with SCIC for the creation the video profile.

We were chosen on the basis of our involvement in community and international service projects such as supporting The Regina Humane Society, The World Wildlife Federation and our work with Project Love. We have also worked on a Peace Project with 47 schools around the world
http://globalpeacemovie.weebly.com/, a Civil Rights Project and we are currently part of a Geography Project. We have had guests speak to us about sustainability of projects and working in developing countries along with how Canadians impact the rest of the world.

Our goal this year is to make a difference in our community whether it be local or global.

Have a great day,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another edition of Friday Writing and the month of February. Yesterday was February 2nd, also known as Groundhog Day. http://www.groundhog.org/ The reports were varied from the different groundhogs in North America. Some groundhogs saw their shadow meaning there would be six more weeks of winter and others didn't. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/02/100201-groundhog-day-2010-punxsutawney-phil-prediction-winter-text/

Your writing assignment this week is to make your own winter weather prediction. Do you think there will be six or more weeks of winter? What will the weather be like? What do you base your prediction on?

There is also the movie "Groundhog Day." Here's a link to the movie trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1957600025/

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

After an incredibly cold week last week we were rewarded with above seasonal temperatures this week. From Wednesday to Wednesday there was a 49 degree temperature difference from -43C to +6C. I think we live in the craziest place for temperature but I'm not complaining about the great weather the last few days.

This week Ms. Casey from Rhode Island is posting the Friday Writing assignment. Check out her blog on the blog roll on the left side of our web page. (http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=195166)

We'll be writing on Monday because this Friday is a day off for students. Teachers are at school for professional development.

It's Cold!!!!!

Article posted January 18, 2012 at 08:28 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 3054

Hi everyone,

We've had a wonderful, mild winter but this week is more like our normal cold. Today the temperature has fallen to -28C but with the windchill it is more like -41C. Needless to say the students are not outside for recess because it's too cold.

Our cutoff temperature is -27C for staying inside. What is your cut off temperature?

Yesterday we had parents calling to ask if the school would be open today due to the cold. We answered that we never close which is true. Our school division never closes schools due to weather in case students show up they need somewhere to go. We also never have a late start to the morning. Everything continues as usual but parents have the choice of sending their children or not. How does it work where you live? Does your close down due to weather? Share your stories and send a comment.

We also would like to welcome Ms. Casey's students in Rhode Island to Friday Writing. We can't wait to read your blog posts!

Keep warm,
Ms. B

Welcome to the next part of the school year! I hope everyone had a good Christmas/holiday break and you were able to enjoy your time away from school.

I'm not sure who's turn it is to write today's writing assignment. I checked our partner blogs and decided it must be my turn.

Today I want you to think about your goals for 2012. What are some changes you want to make? What would you like to accomplish? Write a list of three goals for 2012 whether it is for school, personal or about your family. I look forward to reading them.

Hi everyone,

It's my turn to post Friday Writing. I'm not being as creative as Mr. Ellis but I hope you'll still enjoy your writing assignment.

I like to look at what important events have happened in history when I'm preparing your assignment. Yesterday, December 1st, was important because on this day in 1955, Rosa Parks (http://www.biography.com/people/rosa-parks-9433715) refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. This was a brave action by Parks. What is the bravest thing you have ever done? Be sure to include details about the event and why you think you were brave.

We have just finished a unit about weather. If you check out the student blogs you will see vokis. The students wrote weather reports and recorded them on the voki then embedded the voki on their blog. The students did a great job so please check out their work.

What's everyone else doing in their classes? Anything new and interesting. Please share what's happening in your class and leave me a comment.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure all of you are eating bags of candy, chocolate bars and other Halloween treats. My poor students, at least they think so, aren't allowed to bring candy or junk food to school. Is it the same at your school?

I was thinking about candy and found this writing prompt. Today is “National Candy Day.” If you could invent a new type of candy, what would it be? What would be the ingredients? What would it look like? What would it taste like? What would you call your new candy?

I hope you have fun with the prompt and I'm looking forward to reading about your new candy.

Hi everyone,

We're almost through another month of school! I can't believe how fast the year is going. We've been so busy at school but it's been a good start to the school year.

Monday is Halloween and my class is getting excited planning for trick or treating. We are planning an outdoor education field trip Monday which will be great fun. We're also going to talk about Halloween history and traditions on Friday. Have a look at this website for some Halloween information and activities: http://www.history.com/topics/halloween/interactives/halloween-by-the-numbers

What are your Halloween plans? My friends in Mexico celebrate Day of the Dead by remembering family and friends who have passed away. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead

Welcome to Fall!

Article posted October 14, 2011 at 02:25 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 6283

Hi everyone,

We are excited to have Mrs. Ellis' class in Meadow Lake join us for Friday writing. We can't wait to read your blog posts.

This week I've been thinking about the weather, especially since we've just started a weather unit in science, and how it changes our lives. I've packed away my summer clothes and gotten out my warm sweaters. Right now I'm looking out my kitchen windows watching the wind and the rain and thinking about my weekend plans. Tomorrow I'm running in a Fall Foursome relay at the RCMP headquarters. Saturday I'm running with my regular running friends. I'm also going to be spending time with my family.

For today's writing I want you to think about the weekend. Having fun doesn't have to cost any money. Describe five fall activities you could do with your family this weekend that would not cost any money.

Enjoy your weekend,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Article posted September 30, 2011 at 04:18 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 6522

Hi everyone,

Wow, this week went by so fast that I can't believe it's already time for Friday writing. My students are really enjoying writing, reading their comments and writing comments for other student blogs. Thanks to everyone who has sent us comments because we really appreciate it.

This week our school joined thousands of students and schools in Canada to run on Wednesday, September 28th. The National School Run Day for the Terry Fox Foundation plans a run every September to support cancer research. http://terryfox.org/SchoolRun/
"In 1980, Terry Fox faced considerable challenges while running the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days during his 3,339 mile Marathon of Hope. It was all about effort for Terry. He challenged himself every day with one goal in mind: raise the most money he could to end cancer. Now it's your turn."

Terry Fox was a regular person who decided to do something extraordinary. Terry is now considered a Canadian hero. For today's writing I want you to write about someone you consider a hero. Explain why that person is a hero to you. Remember your hero doesn't have to be someone famous but can be someone who has done something extraordinary to help others.

The Terry Fox youtube site has great videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/terryfoxcanada

Have a great day,

Hi everyone,

Today's Friday Writing assignment was posted by Mr. Ellis. He asked us to write about how we could make a difference when someone was being bullied. We thought about all of the ways that a student could help in a bullying situation. Read the blog posts for some great ideas.

The writing assignment continued to have us thinking about the theme of Peace. We can help stop bullying and have peace in our school and playground. Our class is helping to make a peace video with other classes around the world. Stay tuned for a link to watch the video clips. We also celebrated Peace Day at our school and had a school assembly to discuss Peace. Have a look at some of our pictures:

Hi everyone,

It's my turn to post Friday writing for my grade 5&6 class and Mr. Ellis's grade 7 class. I'm so excited to be working with Mr. Ellis again! Remember that the link to Mr. Ellis is on the left side of our class blog page.

Here's today's blog assignment, you are going to write 7 random facts about yourself. The secret is to make the facts interesting but not too personal. Here are my facts:

1. This summer I was in England, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
2. I've been teaching in elementary schools for 12 years.
3. I drive a blue smart car.
4. I have a son and a daughter.
5. My favourite snack is popcorn.
6. My eyes are green.
7. I love math and science.

I can't wait to read everyone's random facts. Happy blogging,

New School Year

Hi everyone,

It's the start of another school year and we're ready to start blogging. This year there are 27 students in my grade 5&6 class. I'm sure that there will be many fabulous blog posts written that you will enjoy reading. We're starting the year with Friday Writing which we will be working on with Mr. Ellis a grade 7 teacher in North Battleford, Canada. A link to his class blog is on the left side of the page. Each week Mr. Ellis or myself will be posting a Friday writing assignment for all of our students. I wonder what Mr. Ellis has planned for today???

We are starting the year reading the Lemony Snicket novel "The Bad Beginning" and working on the Daily Five in Language Arts. Be prepared to read some blog posts about the Baudelaire children.

In our Inquiry and Project area we are focusing on Global Learning and Education. Yesterday we were talking about the draught and famine in Somalia. I was in Kenya this summer and it was a nightly news story due to a large refugee camp in northern Kenya. One thousand Somalis a day are entering the camp looking for food and support. Hi everyone,

It's June 6th already and I can't believe it's almost the end of another school year. Our last day of school is June 28th which is probably a lot longer than many other schools. We have two months of summer holidays than we return for another year. We have to be in school 194 days every year. When is your last day? How many days of school do you have?

We're finishing our year by reading the novel "Crash" by Jerry Spinelli. We're also finishing a science unit on forces and small machines. In math we're writing year end assessments and finishing units. We also have an outdoor school day planned, swimming, a trip to the park and some other fun events.

The end will come very quickly and the report cards will be handed out.

take care,
Ms. B

Spring! Really!

Article posted May 7, 2011 at 03:01 PM GMT0 • comment (6) • Reads 10789

Hi everyone,
It really is spring in Saskatchewan. The snow is melted, at least all that I can see, and the grass is starting to turn green. We had a great week at school and we're thinking about track meets, playing basketball on the playground and field trips. We still have several weeks of school left but the weather is nice and we're having fun.

We're starting a new Science unit on Forces and Simple Machines. We really like Science because there is lots of experiments, design and building activities. The students were also busy writing about their Easter vacation and will be writing about spring this week.

We loved hearing about the balloon project and it made us think about what we're grateful and hopeful for. If you haven't heard about it check out Mr. Taylor's class at: http://kidblog.org/MrTaylorsClass4/taylorclass/high-hope

What exciting things are you doing in your classroom? Share them with us!

Have a great weekend,

Spring????

Article posted April 15, 2011 at 05:19 PM GMT0 • comment (14) • Reads 7601

Hi everyone,

It's supposed to be spring in Saskatchewan but Mother Nature played a trick on us. It snowed over night and now there's a layer of white on the ground. We had a high of +12C on Sunday and we were thinking it was finally spring but not quite. I hope the snow melts today but we all had to get warmer jackets out to wear. We've had a lot of snow in our province this winter plus we had a lot of rain in the fall. All of this precipitation is causing flood problems. There are many roads in the province that are flooded and 6 towns have declared states of emergency because of flooding. We haven't had the peak of the rising water yet so I hope that there won't be too much damage. Here's some information and videos about the flooding. http://www.globalnews.ca/Near+record+flooding+forecasted+Saskatchewan/4604644/story.html

In Social Studies we've been studying the geography and environment of Canada. We're talking about the animals, birds and flowers of the provinces and territories. We'll have a break from this after Easter when we study Forces and Small Machines in Science.

We're reading about mystery stories and beginning to write our own mysteries. After Easter there should start to be some stories being posted to blogs. Does anyone have a good mystery story or author to share with us? A few good authors we know are: Arthur Slade, Mary Harlekin Bishop and Avi.

have a great day everyone,

Report Cards and Conference Time

Hi,
Our report cards were sent home last Friday and our parent/student conferences are this week. We have worked hard and it will be great to share this with all of our families.

We're starting a new Language Arts unit focused on Mysteries. We'll be reading, writing and solving mysteries for the next several weeks. We were looking at the Unsolved Mysteries site today: http://www.unsolved.com/ Tomorrow we're reading about the Bermuda Triangle. I wonder what the real explanation is for the strange happenings in the area of the world.

In math we're learning about fractions; ratio; converting between fractions, decimals and percentages; comparing fractions and decimals.
We watched this video lesson:
v

We also love the Spy Guys Math site for great math tutorials. http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mesg/html/math6web/index.html

March

Article posted March 16, 2011 at 09:59 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 4699

Hi everyone,

We've had a very busy month and it's only March 16th! We started the month with a math integration day to celebrate World Math Day. Students from k-8 worked in cooperative groups to complete math activities using tangrams. We also had "Robert Munsch" week and celebrated the wonderful books that Robert Munsch wrote. On March 14th we celebrated Pi Day with another math integration. Students measured circumference and diameter to calculate Pi. We also ate banana cream pie because the day wouldn't have been complete without it.

Today is green day at our school to celebrate St. Patrick's day tomorrow. The students have a five day weekend and won't be in school. We also had green pancakes and fruit to start off the day.

We also have report cards coming out next Friday so we've been busy with unit tests and assessments. We're starting a new Social unit on the geography of Canada. http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/index.html In language arts we've been focusing on reading comprehension and elements of stories.

Have a great day,
Ms. B

New Month!

Article posted March 3, 2011 at 03:29 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 3951

Hi everyone,

I just realized that I didn't write very much this month. My students have been writing about what's happening in our classroom but I've been neglectful.

In Science we've been studying "Matter", the states of matter, completing several experiments and researching how different food products are made. Have you ever wondered how gum is made? Watch this video to find out!

What about jelly beans?

For the last four days we've been celebrating Robert Munsch week in our school. Each day we've focused on a different Munsch book:
Monday: "Thomas' Snowsuit" We had a Tuque day.
Tuesday: "Pigs" We had a pigs-in-a-blanket breakfast.
Wednesday: "Stephanie's Ponytail" It was crazy hair day.
Thursday: "The Paper Bag Princess" We wore crowns and tiaras for Royalty Day.
We also read Munsch books, discussed the books and completed literacy activities surrounding the stories. Every morning we played the Robert Munsch theme book over the intercom for the entire school to enjoy. http://robertmunsch.com/

It's still cold in Saskatchewan. This morning was -29C with the wind chill. The forecast is for a colder than normal March. March 1st was actually the coldest March 1st on record in the 140 years that weather data has been collected. The morning temperature was -41C. Brrrrrrrrr!

Have a great day,

Hi everyone,

I seem to have been focusing on the weather since Christmas but every time I post a new blog it's a very cold day. Today it's -25C with a 5km/h wind making the temperature -30C with wind chill. Once again we're staying inside for recesses. The bright side is that we're expecting warmer temperatures starting tomorrow. We definitely have our fingers crossed!

We're working on our nine times tables this week. Here are some videos and tips to help you learn them.

We also have new spelling words this week. They are:
Atlantic, exploration, privateer, voyage, canoe, explorer, route, danger, pirate and ship.

Today is 100 days of school in our school district. We are having a math integration with grades 1-8 this morning. The students are mixed up and sent to classrooms and support teachers for fun math activities. We're having a 100 jelly bean graphing activity, making leis with 100 fruit loops on a 100cm piece of string and answering questions that all involve 100. It should be a fun math class!

Have a great day,
Ms. B

Hi everyone,

It's another very cold day in Saskatchewan. Currently it is -21C with a north wind of 22km/h which makes the temperature -32C with the windchill. With the temperatures this cold we'll be staying in for recess! We know it's cold but we have the clothes, boots and accessories to keep us warm. We feel lucky that we're not having to deal with natural disasters like our friends in Australia and Brazil.

We are continuing to read "Julie of the Wolves" and study the Fur Trade and it's impact on Canada and the First Nations people of our country. We watched this video on Friday: "The Other Side of the Ledger: An Indian View of the Hudson's Bay Company"

We will be starting new units in many of our subjects as well as reading a new novel "Julie of the Wolves." We will read the novel and write blog posts about the book. We are already in the middle of winter and it's only December 10th! Today the temperature is -14 celcius but it's been very windy so with the wind chill the temperature is -21 celcius. There is also lots of snow here. We go out for recess and play on the playground even when it's cold. The temperatures has to hit -25C or below for us to stay in. When we stay in we play games in the classroom which can be lots of fun. The forecast is for colder temperatures on the weekend so I hope that I can keep warm.

We had our Winter Concert last night. The classes in our school sang, played instruments and did a bit of acting. Our class sang two songs and some students played ukeleles to accompany the class.

I'll post pictures so everyone can see what we the performances.

Hi everyone,

I can't believe that it is December already! We've been busy in all of our classes learning about the world particularly the Holocaust, electricity, the way our bodies work and finishing our Canada scrapbook pages. I wonder what the rest of you have been doing at school.

This month we're getting ready for our Winter Concert which is December 9th. We've been practicing really hard to prepare. The grade sixes have their first band concert on December 16th for family. I can't wait to hear them perform. They will also perform a mini-concert at school for the other students.

We've also started playing ball hockey outside at recess. We take nets, sticks and a ball outside to play. We're outside in the snow and cold even though the video shows people playing when it's nice out.

Hi everyone,

The month of September has passed incredibly quickly. I can't believe that a month of school is already over. We've been busy settling into the new school year and learning the routines of the classroom.

We had an awesome field trip on September 17th. We went to the Condie Nature Refuge which is 20 minutes away from Regina. The students have written some great blog posts about our trip and we took lots of pictures.

Our cross-country team ran at two meets in September. Our students did really well and we were really lucky to have lovely weather.

This week has been really beautiful outside which is a change from the first three weeks of school. We had lots of rain and cold days. We even had to have some indoor recesses because it was so wet outside.

We're looking forward to some collaborative projects in the month of October. We're participating in the Monster Project and beginning a Scrapbook Project. Look for the project on NEW SCHOOL: http://grou.ps/newschool/ We're also finishing up the Square of Life project that we started in September. You can read about the students' squares on their blogs.

Hope September was great for everyone!

Hi everyone,

I'm still in Kenya and loving every minute of it.
I'm sitting outside our accomodations at Utimishi Boys Academy in Naivasha. I'm using a wireless modem that a few of us are sharing. The area is beautiful and today is hot and sunny. We spent yesterday visiting schools in the area and traveled on some incredibly bumpy roads to get there. We saw all sorts of schools from fairy well built to ones with dirt floors. There is no standard type of school. This morning I sat in on a grade 11 physics lesson at the academy. This is a national boarding school with students here who have scored well on their grade 8 exams.
Tomorrow we're going to Lake Naivasha in the morning then Hell's Gate park in the after noon. The schools are closed to allow teachers to vote on a referendum that is suggesting changes to the Kenyan constitution. We'll spend Thursday and Friday morning planning for next week then Friday afternoon doing some shopping in Naivasha. We leave for Lake Nakuru on Saturday morning where we'll meet the group that is in Laikipia.

take care,

We also saw giraffes, zebras and ostriches. I'll post pictures when I can. We visited a Masai village and danced with the Masai. I'm back in Nairobi for the weekend then traveling to the Naivasha area for the week.

It's been a fantastic trip so far. I miss everyone at home.

Ancient Greece and Mythology

Article posted May 19, 2010 at 05:20 PM GMT0 • comment (9) • Reads 7742

Hi everyone,

We've been really busy finishing up our unit on Ancient Greece and Mythology. The students decided they would like to complete projects to wrap up everything. Each student has a Greek persona like Persephone, Hades, Cyclops and a Minotaur. We wanted to have projects that focused on our personas. We brainstormed project ideas and this is what we came up with:
Wiki Page: Create a web page about your Greek persona.
Myth & Legend: Create a legend on the web site.
Mask
Sculpture
Diorama
Play
Puppet Show
iMovie or Animoto
Poster
Collage
VoiceThread
Temple Construction

The students had to complete two projects but most completed 3 or more. It's been exciting in our class that last few weeks. The students in the play will be performing for the grade 1&2 and grade 3&4 class shortly. The students wrote their script, practiced and made props. I'll take pictures and share with everyone.

The students also wrote diary entries and blogged about their project. Check out the student blogs to read their writing. The blogs aren't appearing in the blog role on the left side of our home page so you need to check out each student.

We've also been reading Tales from the Odyssey by Mary Pope Osborne. I'm sure you'd enjoy these books.
"Mary Pope Osborne's Tales from the Odyssey is a six-book series that retells the tales of Homer’s Odyssey for children. Book I is entitled The One-Eyed Giant. The book opens with a very brief summary of the story of the Illiad giving the background of the Trojan War, the tale of the Trojan horse, and a little background for Odysseus, the main character of the Odyssey, and how he was entrapped into fighting in the war. Finally, the story moves from the Illiad to the Odyssey, or the story of Odysseus’ attempt to return home begins."

Have a great day,
Ms. Pandora (my Ancient Greek person)

Hi everyone,

We've been so busy at school that I don't know where the time has gone. We're working really hard on our Science unit about Electricity. We've been learning about circuits, conductivity, energy transformations, alternative energy sources and trouble shooting. Next week we're planning on building flashlights. Wish us luck.

We are studying myths and mythology in language arts and examining Ancient Greek society in Social Studies. Each of us have adopted an Ancient Greek persona so you'll start to read stories about Zeus, Hera, their family and mythological beasts. We'll be basing our stories on everything we've been learning so I think they'll be great. We're also reading "Tales from the Odyssey" written by Mary Pope Osborne.

The grade sixes are working on a collaborative project with students in London, England and California. The project is based on the "Crogan's Adventures" written by Chris Schweizer. You can have a look at the wiki by clicking on the link at the top of the blog page.

Let us know what you're doing in your class.

Hi everyone,

We've been back to school after a week's break for Easter. It's sunny and warm here which has been great for us to test our solar ovens. We're studying electricity and energy in our Science class and our latest challenge was to design, build and test a solar oven. We were trying to roast a marshmallow in our final test. We didn't quite roast the marshmallows but they did start to cook. Our ovens reached a high of 65 degrees Fahrenheit or around 18 degrees Celcuis. We were pleased with our results and can't wait for our next Science challenge.

I hope that everyone is enjoying their week,

Hi everyone,

What an exciting weekend of Winter Olympics for Canada! The men's hockey game has just finished with Canada winning the gold medal in over time. Sydney Crosby of Coal Harbour, Nova Scotia scored the winning goal. Canada's women's team won gold on Friday night. Whoo Hoo! We apologize to all of our American friends but we can't help but be excited.

Here's a few great quotes:

"We are taking this opportunity to inform you that due to hockey, Canada will be closed from 12Noon - 3PM PST , Sunday Feb 28 2010. Thank you for understanding. █♥█ GO CANADA GO █♥█"

"Canada, our Canada, is truly worthy of our pride and patriotism … We will ask the world to forgive us this time, this uncharacteristic outburst of patriotism and pride, our pride of being part of a country that is strong, confident, and stands tall among the nations." - Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada

"Our father, who art in Vancouver, hockey be thy name. Thy will be done, the gold be won, for the women, as well as the men. Give us this day, a USA loss, and forgive us our penalties as we forgive those who cross check against us. Lead us not into elimination, but deliver us to victory. In the name of Gretzky, Lemieux, and Gordie Howe. Amen. █ ♥ █ GO CANADA GO"

Canada has now won the most gold medals at a Winter Olympics.
Canada 14 gold 7 silver 5 bronze 26 total
This is Canada's best results ever at a Winter Olympics!!!

Olympic Project

Article posted February 26, 2010 at 01:14 AM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 1281

Hi everyone,

We are working on an Olympic project and loving every minute of it. Our morning starts with me streaming the CTV Olympic morning show on the SmartBoard while the students are checking stories and standings in the newspapers or online. My students then check our Facebook and Twitter accounts to see if any of the Olympic athletes we’re following have posted updates. Later in the day we’ll watch the Olympics (we are really lucky that the Olympics are being streamed on CTV, TSN and Roger's Sportsnet), students will update their wikis about the sports they’re focusing on and writing profiles about their Olympic athletes. Four years ago when I did an Olympic project we watched the games on the TV in the afternoons and students did some minor research using the available desktop computers we had in the room. Times have really changed.

Here's a link to our Olympic Sports wiki: http://2010olympics.wikispaces.com/Sports+of+the+Winter+Olympics+Haultain. You can check out the individual sport wikis that the students have been working on.

Have a great rest of the week watching the Olympics!
Ms. B

p.s.
Thanks for all of the comments from Mr. Crosby's class in Reno and the students from Adelaide. We'll write to you next week.

Olympics: Week 2

Article posted February 22, 2010 at 01:18 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1058

Hi everyone,

What an exciting week at the Olympics in Vancouver. We've been watching the Olympics each day in class then many of us have been watching it at night at home. The action has been amazing. We've watched men's and women's ski events, speed skating, curling, hockey, snowboarding, luge and skeleton. Each student in our class has chosen an athlete to follow during the games. Many of our athletes have competed already and some even have won medals. What sports have you been watching? Do you have a favourite athlete?

Tomorrow we are having our own mini-Olympic games. We will be competing in five events including an Olympic Trivia contest. I wonder who our winners will be?

Keep reading our blogs this week as we write about what we're watching, who we're following on our Twitter and Facebook accounts and who's doing well at the games. Good Luck everyone!

This week we're focusing on our 8 times tables. We will be having our quiz on Thursday this week because we don't have school on Friday.

Have a good week everyone,
Ms. B

Skype Calls, Times Tables and Olympic Activities

Hi everyone,

We're still working hard on our times tables and Olympic project. This week we're working on our six times table with a quiz on Wednesday because we only have a three day week. We're studying the sports of the Winter Olympics and we've chosen an athlete from our sport. I can't believe that the opening ceremonies for the games are already this Friday. I can't wait to watch!

We had a great Skype call with the Middle School of Piedmont, Oklahoma this morning. We had fun explaining to them what a toque is. If you don't know I guess you'll have to google the word "toque."

Hi everyone,

We are busy working on our Olympic projects, including learning about all of the Olympic sports and choosing a Canadian Olympian to follow throughout the games. Check out the link at the top of the blog page.

We were also fortunate to Skype with two other classes working on the Olympic project. We Skyped with Columbus Elementary School in Bridgeport, Connecticut and Lafayette Regional School in Franconia, New Hampshire. We chatted about the Olympic project but we also learned a lot about each other, our schools and where we live. We have more Skype calls planned for next week to learn about our project partners and talk about the Olympics.

This week we're focusing on the five times table and getting ready for a quiz on Friday.

Have a great week,

Hi everyone,

We skyped with Washington Elementary School in Owatonna, Minnesota on Thursday morning. We found out that they go to school from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm while our school hours are 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. We also have an hour for lunch and go home while they only have 30 minutes and stay for lunch. We're all working together on the 2010 Olympic project so we also talked about that. We're looking forward to skyping with them again.

We're busy researching and organizing our planet information so that we can create iMovies. We were also researching winter Olympic history so that we could create either an Animoto or iMovie. We also started our own novels in class then once a week we write in our reading response journal. I'm reading the book "Still Alice" and it's about a Harvard professor who finds out she has Alzheimer's Disease.

We're also practicing our 4 times tables for a quiz on February 1st. Have fun working and singing along with the videos!

Hi everyone,

I'm so excited that we've started working on our Olympic project. I know that I've already learned some interesting facts about Olympic history that I didn't know last week. I also think it was perfect that the Olympic Torch Relay came through Regina just as were beginning our project. This week we'll continue learning about Olympic history so that you can create your history time lines or Animoto videos.

We'll also be starting our planet research in order to prepare for the planet reports. Start thinking about how you want to present your report. We'll be using VoiceThread, iMovie, posters or you can write a report.

Don't forget that this week we're practicing our three times tables. We'll have our quiz on Friday.

New Year's Resolutions

Hi everyone,

New Years is traditionally the time to make a resolution or a promise to yourself about something you would like to change this year. Your task today is to write a New Year's resolution, explain why you would like to make that change or promise then tell me what you are going to do to achieve your resolution.

My New Year's resolution is to be a better friend by calling my friends on the phone more often to catch up with then and see how they are. I'm really bad about calling friends and usually wait for them to call me. I'm going to start my resolution by calling two good friends this weekend then make sure to call a friend every two days. Wish me luck with my resolution!

Hope you are all keeping warm,

Hi everyone,

I hope that you are staying warm. It has been very cold in Saskatchewan this week. This morning was the warmest all week with a temperature of -14 celcius and -21 celcius with the wind chill. We've had mornings that were -43 with windchill. Needless to say we've had indoor recesses this week. The students are playing games, blogging and singing Christmas songs.

For today's writing I want you think about the celebrations that you take part in throughout the year. My class participates in Christmas celebrations, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve events. What do you celebrate? What is the history of the celebration or traditions in that you celebrate? Remember that the person who reads your blog may know nothing about your celebration so you'll need to write a good explanation.

Have a happy, warm weekend,

Hi everyone,

Wow, I can't believe that another month has gone by. Maybe it's because we're so busy that the days and weeks fly by. We had our monthly Celebration Assembly on Wednesday. We had a wonderful presentation on the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, along with an invitation for all students and family to participate in activities the day the Olympic Torch visits Regina. On January 10th citizens of Regina are invited to participate in the Torch Relay as it visits our city along with sports and cultural events that will culminate in fireworks.

Have a look at what happened in our school during the month of November.

Have you ever thought about what you can do to make a difference in your community?

Recently there was an article in the Leader Post Newspaper featuring Souls Harbour Rescue Mission. We decided we would take action. SHRM is hoping to collect 1000 socks that are stuffed with daily needs such as travel-sized toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotions, etc.

Your challenge: Write a paragraph on how you could make a difference in your community. Remember you can write about the small or large community. Need ideas? Check out some of these websites:

Hi everyone,

Our Saskatchewan Roughriders advanced to the Grey Cup yesterday by winning the Western Division Finals. The Grey Cup is the championship game for the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Grey Cup will be played in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, November 29th.

"The Roughriders kept pace with a thrilling 27-17 home victory over the Calgary Stampeders thanks to two second-half touchdown passes from Darian Durant to snap a 10-10 half-time tie with the defending Grey Cup champions."

"The win will earn Saskatchewan its eighth Grey Cup appearance since 1948, when the Regina Roughriders became a provincially owned and operated club. Saskatchewan will get its second title shot in three years (the Riders beat Winnipeg in the '07 title game) and its first-ever championship meeting with Montreal. The Alouettes find themselves in the CFL championship game for the seventh time since 2000 but they're looking for just their second victory over that span." source: www.cfl.ca

Last week we were very fortunate to have a Burrowing Owl visit our classroom. The Burrowing Owl lives at the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (http://www.sboic.ca/)"The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) is an educational facility dedicated to the conservation of Burrowing Owls and their prairie home. Located in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, SBOIC is at the center of the Burrowing Owl's range on the Canadian Plains.

Burrowing Owls are in trouble in Canada; their populations have been declining sharply for over a decade and it's possible that there will soon be no more of these little ground owls left in Canada."

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes: Friday Writing

Article posted November 13, 2009 at 02:53 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1516

Hi everyone,

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes is a non-fiction children's book written by American author Eleanor Coerr and published in 1977.

The story is of a girl, Sadako Sasaki, who lived in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing. She developed leukemia from the radiation and spent her time in a nursing home folding paper cranes in hope of making a thousand, which supposedly would have allowed her to make one wish, which was to live. However, she only managed to fold 644 cranes before she became too weak to fold one more, and died shortly after.

For today's writing I'd like you to write an acrostic poem using the words Sadako and Peace. Check out these websites if you need help:

History of Poppy & Remembrance Day

Article posted November 2, 2009 at 02:28 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 2612

Hi everyone,

In Canada we recognize the efforts of our Armed Forces and the lives lost on Remembrance Day , November 11th. We wear a poppy to honour those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

"Each November, Poppies blossom on the lapels and collars of over half of Canada’s entire population. Since 1921, the Poppy has stood as a symbol of Remembrance, our visual pledge to never forget all those Canadians who have fallen in war and military operations. The Poppy also stands internationally as a “symbol of collective reminiscence”, as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

This significance of the Poppy can be traced to international origins.

The association of the Poppy to those who had been killed in war has existed since the Napoleonic Wars in the 19th century, over 110 years before being adopted in Canada. There exists a record from that time of how thickly Poppies grew over the graves of soldiers in the area of Flanders, France. This early connection between the Poppy and battlefield deaths described how fields that were barren before the battles exploded with the blood-red flowers after the fighting ended.

Just prior to the First World War, few Poppies grew in Flanders. During the tremendous bombardments of that war, the chalk soils became rich in lime from rubble, allowing “popaver rhoes” to thrive. When the war ended, the lime was quickly absorbed and the Poppy began to disappear again.

The person who was responsible more than any other for the adoption of the Poppy as a symbol of Remembrance in Canada and the Commonwealth was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical Officer during the First World War."

Crooked Valley Field Trip

Article posted October 26, 2009 at 10:24 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1497

Hi everyone,

We are excited about our field trip this Friday, We are traveling to Crooked Valley which is part of the Qu'Appelle Valley (http://www.virtualsk.com/current_issue/valley_of_legend.html). The theme of the trip is 'Hunters & Gatherers.' At Crooked Valley there remains a site that was once used by First Nations people to herd bison over a 10 metre cliff as part of their hunting process. This site has not been used as a jump for approximately 200 years.

We will be examining the geography and geology of the area as well, we will be searching for bison bones at the bottom of the cliff. During the day we will be doing archery, taking a nature hike, playing traditional games and learning about First Nations people.

Students will be packing a lunch, water and depending on the weather, hot chocolate.

Wish us good luck for great weather,
Ms. B

Think about the mood of the painting, how does the painting make you feel, what you think is happening in the painting or what happened before or after. I'd also like you to use lots of adjectives in your paragraph.

Hi everyone,

We recently finished reading "The Bad Beginning" by Lemony Snicket. It was a great book to start the school year. Near the beginning of the book Count Olaf tells the Baudelaire orphans that they must make supper for him and his acting troupe. The Baudelaire orphans do not know how to cook but find a recipe for puttanesca sauce for pasta in a cook book at Justice Strauss's. Unfortunately, Count Olaf doesn't want pasta for supper. We found a recipe for puttanesca sauce and made it at school. It was very good.

Hi everyone,

We've been having a great time in our science classes. We were learning about the water cycle last week and found the great video that I posted on my last blog.

Last week we were learning about air pressure and temperature change. I found an interesting experiment that I haven't done for years "the egg in the bottle" experiment. We tried it with two different bottles last week and it didn't work. I mentioned our difficulty to another teacher and she brought us a glass milk bottle today. We attempted the experiment three more times until 'voila' it worked. We were so excited and happy that it worked out. Here's a video to demonstrate what we did.

We also did an experiment to learn about lightning. We made lightning in our mouth using wint-o-green lifesavers. We had a great time.

For other great weather experiments check out this website: www.weatherwizkids.com. It's my new favourite page to check out on the web.

Hope you're all having a great day!

Friday Writing

Article posted September 18, 2009 at 04:51 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1124

Hi everyone,

I can't believe it's already another Friday writing. This week went really fast for me but maybe it was because I felt so busy.

For today's writing I want you to think about what the job of the school principal is. Now here's the fun part. If you were principal what would you change? Would you have different rules or do you think some rules are necessary so you don't have chaos in the halls? What kinds of things do you think you would have to do in your office? How would you deal with an unhappy student or parent? Would you bring treats for the staffroom? (This question is really important to me because I love treats.)

Don't forget to write a paragraph for your blog. Start with an introductory sentence explaining what you're writing about. Explain about your topic and why you think a certain way. Finally write a closing sentence reminding your readers what your topic was.

Have a great Friday and weekend,
Ms B

I had to add this video because my class loves it!
Hope you enjoy it.

It's Wednesday in our classroom and we're still busy getting used to being back at school. We have classroom routine's that we're trying to learn and remember. The grade sixes in our class are starting bad this week which is exciting for them. We had our back to school barbeque on Monday night. Finally, today is our first cross country running meet of the school year.

What is everyone else doing at their school? Are you playing soccer or football? Did your school have a back to school family night? Write a comment and let me know what you're doing where you live. My class is really curious to learn more about the people who visit our blog page.

Friday Writing

Article posted September 11, 2009 at 04:07 AM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1510

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another week of Friday writing. Your writing assignment is on Mr. Ellis's blog page so you'll have to go to his page, look on the left side of our main blog page, and follow his directions.

When you're writing you will need to remember to answer in a paragraph which will include:

Title

Opening or Introductory Sentence: Tell your readers what you're writing about.

Developing Sentences or the Body: Explain what you are writing about and why you have chosen the topic.

Conclusion: Remind your readers what you're writing about.

I hope that you are having a good week. I can't wait to see everyone again on Monday.

See you soon,
Ms. B.

p.s. Ms. Kasper and I were talking about this video today with another intern. Ms. Kasper hasn't seen it so I thought I'd post it on our blog.

Hard at Work

Article posted September 9, 2009 at 03:01 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 707

Hi everyone,

I'm just getting ready to leave to meet Ms. Kasper at our Internship Seminar. Last night we met at the Travelodge with 200 other students and teachers then moved into our small groups. We will be working with our small groups for the next three days to help the interns set goals for the next four months, set up discussion for pre and post teaching and organize the teaching schedule. Wow! That sounds like a lot for three days. In between we'll get to know each other better and eat some great lunches.

I've added a new link on the left side of the page for Homework and Classroom news. Check it out for information about school. Family can subscribe to the Schoolnotes so that when I update the site it can go directly to their email inbox.

I hope you have a great day with Mrs. Halliday. I'll write and post another blog post before the week is out.

See you Monday,
Ms. B

Friday Writing

Article posted September 4, 2009 at 04:25 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 1462

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the first day of Friday Writing for the school year. Every Friday there will be a writing assignment posted on my blog or Mr. Ellis' blog. We will be looking for well-written and interesting paragraphs. Sometimes you will be adding videos, pictures or other information from the Internet to add to your blog post.

Today I want you to think about your goal or goals for the school year. What is something that you would really like to work on, accomplish or be a part of? This year I want to be a better listener when students talk to me. Sometimes I'm busy with my own work and don't listen as well as I should. This year I want to practice putting my pen down or stop looking at the computer and give students all of my attention when they talk to me.

I can't wait to read your blog posts.

New Bloggers

Article posted August 31, 2009 at 02:58 AM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 1779

Hi everyone,

We're back at school and ready to start blogging. The grade 5&6s wrote their first blog posts last Friday and will continue this week. The students had fun learning how to navigate around their blog pages. This week we will begin writing longer blog posts and changing background looks.

This is our first full week at school. We are starting many exciting units in all of our subject areas. In Language Arts we are reading the Lemony Snickett novel "The Bad Beginning" and writing descriptive paragraphs. In Math both grades are studying about patterns. In Science we are studying a short unit on weather so that we can make use of our classroom weather station while in Social Studies we are learning about Canada and our cultural backgrounds.

Remember to visit the grade 5&6 bloggers and add comments to their blog posts. The students are so excited to have blogs and would love visitors.

Have a great week,
Ms B

Almost Time to Start School

Article posted August 25, 2009 at 04:01 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 765

Hi everyone,

Just two more days until school starts! Ms Kasper and I are busy getting the room ready for Thursday. My head is spinning with my plans for the school year and lists of things to do.

Tonight AC/DC are playing in Regina. My house is 5 blocks away from Taylor Field where the open air concert is taking place. I can hear AC/DC through my open windows or when I walk outside.

I was walking outside when I heard the low rumble of jets overhead and looked up to see the Snowbirds Acrobatic Team. The Snowbirds are based at CFB Moose Jaw which is only 45 minutes away from Regina. They were part of the evening's pre-concert show. It was really cool to stand in my yard and watch them fly by.

Enjoy your last two days of holidays!

Summer Holidays

Article posted August 4, 2009 at 04:25 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 2738

Hi everyone,

How is everyone's summer going? I hope you're spending lots of time outside hanging out with friends. I spent two weeks in the Maritimes touring Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I walked on the beach, saw beautiful lighthouses and ate a lot of amazing seafood. After returning home I traveled to Cozumel, Mexico for ten days. Now that I'm back home I wish the weather would be better. It's been quite cool with only a couple of sunny and hot days. What's everyone else been doing this summer?

We've had lots of visitors to our blog over the last month. In fact, the last blog post has received over 8,000 visitors from all over the world. We've also received several comments so check out your blog, read the comments and reply back.

School starts on August 29th at 9:00am which is three and a half weeks away. I'm not quite ready to get back yet but I am looking forward to having Ms Kasper with me as an intern in the fall. I won't change the grade 6&7 blogs until the fall when I add the grade 5&6 class so keep checking out your blog for comments from visitors or write about your summer.

Have a great week!

Last Week of School

Article posted June 22, 2009 at 04:19 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 8837

Hi everyone,

We only have three days of classes left for this year. I can't believe that it's almost over.

Today we're going to walk to the Regina Cemetery established in 1883. The city cemetery is the final resting place for many of Regina's early pioneers and local dignitaries. Some of the more interesting gravesites at the city cemetery is the Darke Mausoleum which houses all of the Darke family members is the only mausoleum in Regina. While at the cemetery each student will choose a gravesite to visit and write about. The Regina cemetery also has a soldier's cemetery for veterans of the Boar War, WWI, WWII and the Korean Conflict.

This afternoon we're going to have the "Battle of the Boats." Each table group will be provided with a box of materials that could be used to create a boat. Teams will be allowed time to build and test their boat. Boats must be powered by the air stored in a balloon or the energy stored in rubber band(s). The boats will be tested during two time trials. The goals will be for the boats to cross the finish line.

I think we'll have a great day. I just hope it doesn't rain again.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day,
Ms B

ABC Story

Article posted June 11, 2009 at 04:40 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 3559

Hi everyone,

We're so close to the end of the school year. Next week we're at outdoor school for three days. We're going to Circle Square Ranch. The day after we're back we're going to the movie "Up!" We won the trip to the movie as part of the Mayor's Reading Challenge. Finally, next Friday afternoon we're going swimming after hosting a hot dog lunch for the school. I think we'll all be really tired Friday night.

We're writing ABC stories in language arts. In ABC stories each sentence starts with a different letter of the alphabet, beginning with the letter A. Read the student stories and be prepared to be amazed at their creativity.

Hope everyone is having a great week,

Science Olympics

Hi everyone,

We're ending the school year with Science Olympic activities. Science Olympics are science activities where groups or individuals are given a task to complete, a specific set of supplies and limited amount of time to finish the task. The challenge to is be creative, problem solve and cooperate with other group members.

Our first challenge was to create towers using only spaghetti and masking tape. The second challenge was to build a crate for an egg that would protect it when dropped from the balcony in our gym. The third challenge was to create a raft using a piece of foil and four straws that would support the greatest amount of pennies while floating in water.

Have a look at some pictures from our Science Olympics.

Have a great weekend.

Individual Novel Studies

Hi everyone,

For the last novel study of the year each student chose their own book. The topics and themes range from World War I, 911, science fiction, horror, vampire romance to mysteries. The students will be adding blogs about their books as they read. Today's blog is about their predictions about what will happen next in their book.

We're also following the rise of Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent. Each time she's on tv we watch the video. We think she's going to win. Do you? Did you know that if she wins she will be singing for the Queen of England? I wonder if she will go to Buckingham Palace to sing or if it will somewhere else.

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

I was inspired for this week's Friday writing from the field trips that we've taken the last two weeks. On May 6th we traveled to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to visit the Tunnels of Time and the Western Development Museum. On May 12th we traveled to the Dirt Hills near Avonlea, Saskatchewan for a full day of hiking and exploring. The Dirt Hills are an area that shows the affect of glaciation in the province and is an area rich in glacial remains. The class had a great time collecting coperlite, which is fossilized droppings from prehistoric creatures. We collected 94 pieces which set a record.

This is a slide show from our trip. There are way too many pictures so don't worry if you don't watch it all. Just don't forget to read the student blogs about our trip.

So, here's today's question and topic. Think about all of the field trips that you've taken at school. What was your favourite trip? Where did you go and why did you go there? What was so great about your trip? I can't wait to read your responses.

My class is off for a four day weekend so we won't be writing until next Tuesday.

Have a great weekend,
Ms B

Who Would You Spend the Day With?

Article posted May 9, 2009 at 11:50 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 2976

Hi everyone,

Yesterday for our Friday writing the question was posed about who would we want to spend the day with. We could choose anyone past or present to live a day with them. We had a good time brain storming and discussing our reasons for choosing these people. Thanks to Ms Fisher in Pennsylvania for an interesting question.

Here are some of the people we talked about. Queen Elizabeth 1 of England, Elvis Presley, Winston Churchill, Hera, Aphrodite, President Barack Obama, Poseidon, Ron Lancaster, Wayne Gretzky, Albert Einstein, Marie Antionette, Genghis Khan, Bacchus, Zeus ,Adam & Jamie from MythBusters, King Tut, Elton John, and Wolverine.

We also discussed who we wouldn't want to spend a day with. Any of Henry the 8th's wives, Mary Queen of Scotts, Hades, Nero, or Anne Frank.

For some more ideas, here's a link to TIME's 2009 list of interesting people of the world.  Who would you like to spend the day with? Check out the student blogs, Friday Writing, to see who they wanted to hang out with.

Don't Judge by Appearances

Hi everyone, My class and I were talking about judging people by appearances. We were watching the YouTube video of Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent and thought how interesting that the judges along with the audience judged Susan based on her clothes, hair and style. What a surprise everyone had when she began to sing! It was great to watch the shocked faces of the judges and audience. If you haven't seen the video you need to watch it. I also love that Susan was a bit cheeky with Simon. You go girl! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY

Friday Writing in the Blogosphere

Hi everyone, I was thinking about today's writing topic and wanted to challenge you with a new writing topic. What is your favourite web tool or application to use? Do you love to Skype and talk to different people around the world? Do you like to create videos using Animoto? Is your favourite tool from Rockyou so that you can add really cool titles to your blog page? What about comic life, flickr, iMovie or wikispaces? Write a blog post about your tool choice explaining why you like using it. Add an example of the way you can use the tool and make sure to add the link.

The web tool that I really like to use is flickr. I like flickr because I can organize my pictures into albums and make super quick slideshows. Watch this short slideshow about some of our science classes. We even invited the pre-k class in to make bouncing balls. Flickr is so easy to use that's why I like it.

Climate Change & Global Warming

Article posted April 20, 2009 at 10:20 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1247

Hi everyone,

We've just returned from our Easter break refreshed and ready to learn. Earth Day is this Wednesday, April 22 so we were talking about climate change and global warming. We watched two videos and listed to David Keith's Ted Talk. David Keith is an environmental scientist who has interesting ideas about dealing with climate change. His big idea is injecting a huge cloud of ash into the atmosphere, like a volcanoe does when it erupts, to deflect sunlight and heat from the earth. My students and I thought there were many good ideas in his talk including:

  • How much climate change is too much?

  • Climate change is not new

  • Humans can adapt but animals like polar bears can't

  • Volcanoes can cool down the earth

  • The Arctic Sea is melting and if that happens some of the biggest cities in the world will disappear

  • Mezosphere is 100km in the ari

  • the polar cap is melting

  • People have to do more

  • Some people are finally doing someting

  • One choice is to make a big cloud to cool down the atmosphere

  • Emissions are growing

  • It will take years to change emission levels even if we stop everything now

We also watched the Blue Man Group's video on climate change:

What are your thoughts on climate change and global warming? Send a comment and share your thoughts.

Have a great day ,

Tunnels of Time

Article posted April 8, 2009 at 02:16 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 3746

Hi everyone,

Our class started reading a new novel last week, Tunnels of Time, written by Mary Harelkin Bishop. The novel is about a girl named Andrea is doesn't want to go to a family wedding but would rather be on a biking trip with her friends. Andrea is very unhappy about attending the wedding and being a bridesmaid for her cousin. Andrea and her family are driving to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan which is only 45 minutes away from where we live. At the wedding rehearsal dinner Andrea is pulled into secret tunnels, that really exist, and enters the world of the 1920's and Al Capone.

On April 21st Mary Bishop will be visiting our class to discuss her books. Mary has written several books in the Tunnels series including Tunnels of Terror and Tunnels of Treachery. I know we'll have lots of questions about writing and where she gets all of her ideas.

On May 6th we'll be traveling to Moose Jaw to visit the tunnels and explore Moose Jaw. It's going to be a great trip!

Have a great day,

Ms B

Volcanoes!

Article posted April 6, 2009 at 10:04 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1155

Hi everyone,

We're talking about Volcanoes in our Science class, which is really timely considering all of the seismic action going on in the world right now. Did you know that Mount Redoubt in Alaska has been erupting for the last week? or that an undersea volcano near the island nation of Tonga has been spewing smoke steam and ash? or even that on the weekend Llaima volcano in Chile blew ash 4 miles or 6.2 kilometers into the sky?

Students spent time this afternoon researching volcanoes and looking for one interesting piece of information. Did you know.......

  • In Pompeii people were buried aliive?

  • In Ethiopia the lava in the volcanoes reaches over 2,000 degrees fahrenheit?

  • The Hawaiin volcanoes are the biggest in the world?

  • In Iceland the volcanoes have fire and ice?

  • The AFP reported that a volcano eruption near the Southe Pacific nation of Tonga has destroyed rich birdlife and vegetation?

  • That 90% of volcanoes are in The Ring of FIre?

  • There are ice volcanoes?

  • A volcanoe can melt a car to nothing?

  • That water and lava will cause steam?

  • You can swim in a non-active volcano?

  • The name volcano has it origins from the name of Vulcan? Vulcan was the god of fire in Roman Mythology.

Enjoy,

Ms B

Around the World in 80 Schools

Article posted April 4, 2009 at 03:50 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 926

Hi everyone, On April 2nd we were Skyping with Mr. Crosby's clss in Nevada while they were being filmed by a local ABC news crew. Here's part of the information on the link:

Local Elementary Students Travel To Canada In One Day Twenty-two local kids traveled to Canada and back Thursday, as part of a school lesson, but they didn't need any permission slips for this trip. The group of sixth-graders from Agnes Risley Elementary School in Sparks used modern computer technology called "Skype" to visit our Northern Neighbors. Canada is the fifth country the group of 11 and 12-year-olds has visited so far this year. The students are working on a national project called "Around the World With 80 Schools," but there are actually more than 150 schools involved. So far, they've been to Argentina, Thailand, Iceland, New Zealand, and Canada. There's no telling where they'll go next. By 11:00 a.m., the 22 students had 21 new friends from Sasketchwan, Canada. They traveled there using 'Skype', a free video-conferencing website that allows people to connect face-to-face, no matter the distance. "It was pretty cool. We can see them and they can see us. We can talk to them," said 6th Grader, Cynthia Lara. "These are the new 20th century tools. We all grew up with chalkboards," said teacher Brian Crosby. The students gave their new friends a presentation of our state song, and answered questions about their favorite sports teams and foods. "It's a really great experience. At first I was nervous, but now it's easy and I think it's cool. It feel like I am traveling and I get a new experience every time," said Paul Nguyen, 6th grade student. Then each of the students has their own blog that they post about their experience, many getting dozens of web hits a day.

Click here to read the rest of the story and watch the news story.

It was great fun and we enjoyed being famous for a short time. Thanks to Mr. Crosby and his grade 6 class for inviting us to join in the Skype call.

Have a great weekend,

Ms B

Friday Writing: Going Green

Article posted April 3, 2009 at 02:58 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 550

Hi everyone,

My students were asking about Friday writing today, Thursday, and wondering what the topic would be about. One of my students suggested that the topic this week be "Going Green." DuDe thought we should discuss everything that we can do to green our world and protect the earth. I know that we've all probably talked and written about this topic but I really like his idea, especially with Earth Day on April 22nd.

So here's your topic: I'm challenging you to change one thing you do this month and go green. I'm planning on riding my bike to school after the Easter break. I don't know if I'll do it every day but the more I do the less carbon emissions I send into the atmosphere. I already drive a SmartCar so I am already reducing my footprint. What do you think you can do to make a change? Write a paragraph about your plan and how you will achieve it.

The following video shows how a company is going green and changing how they do business.

I can't wait to read your plans for April,

Friday Writing: The Iditarod

Article posted March 13, 2009 at 02:24 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1211

Hi everyone,

For today's writing I'm asking you to think about the Iditarod Trail Dog Race that we're following in Alaska. From the Iditarod Insider:
Lance Mackey Had an incredible run from Takotna to Iditarod, blazing past race leaders Aaron Burmeister, Hugh Neff, and arriving in Iditarod gaining hours on his closest competitors. Iditarod Insider GPS Tracker tracked Mackey’s team at speeds up to ten miles per hour. the team’s quick pace on a trail that was very forgiving gave his team a great advantage. The question now is how much of a lead will Lance Mackey have after the other teams arrive in Iditarod, and who will be the first to leave the ghost town that is the namesake of “The Last Great Race”?

The top racers have reached the halfway point of Iditarod. What are your predictions for the race? Who do you think is going to win? Support your predictions with information from the "Current Standings" (http://www.iditarod.com/). Use information about how many dogs the musher has left, the speed the team is traveling, what the conditions on the rest of the route are and the mushers race history. Remember that we have seen the lead shift over the past week and the members of the top ten leaders list change.

There was also an earthquake near Mount Redoubt yesterday but I haven't read any news of it on the Iditarod site.
Good target=_blank>

Good luck everyone,
Ms B

p.s. We really are going on our Winter Survival trip today. The forecast is for +3C which would be fantastic. Keep watching the pictures.

My students are blogging about the progress of their mushers and tracking their progress on a map in our classroom. Every day we are checking updates and watching videos of the mushers. Keep watching our updates and blog posts to see who's leading the race.

Currently the weather in Nome, Alaska is 26F or -3C while in Regina, where we live, it's -35C or -47C with the windchill. We live 2998 km or 1863 miles southeast so why are we so much colder? The mushers are lucky they don't have our weather do deal with!

Fun Friday Writing

Article posted February 27, 2009 at 04:02 AM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 1521

Hi everyone,

It's Mr. Elli's turn to plan the Friday writing assignment. It's a good thing that we spoke to him and his class on Skype yesterday so that he didn't forget! Hmmmmm....I hope he doesn't read this blog post. Nobody tell him. Let's just keep it between us.

There are lots of assignments to be finished for today. Some of the grade sixes have math to complete and hand in. The First Nations projects need to be finished for today. I will assign times in the next two weeks to present the projects. Everyone also needs to have their novel finished as we are beginning the final project next week.

Our two university students start on Monday, Miss Dizy and Miss Kasper will be with us for three weeks. I'm really looking forward to learning with them.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Friday Writing

Article posted February 20, 2009 at 01:36 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 951

Hi everyone,

It's going to be a cold, blustery day in Regina. I've been listening to the radio and they are reporting very icy roads. There's already been rollovers on the Ringroad , this is a road that circles are half of the city withspeeds of 100km. In Regina we never have snow day, icy days or any other kind of days that might cause school to cancel. What do you think about this? Do you have snow days where you live? If you have snow days what do you do instead of being in school? Do you think the schools should be open or closed when it's very cold or blustery out. Write a paragraph explaining what you think about schools closing for weather and give reasons to support your opinion.

Look forward to reading your paragraphs,

Ms B

p.s.

My sister was in Maui in January for holidays. While she was away school was cancelled in Maui due to high winds. They had a "wind day." My sister thought that was funny because for some reason it was too dangerous to have school so instead there were lots of kids surfing on the ocean. Hmmm....I wonder which is more dangerous, school or surfing? What do you think?

Welcome to Friday Writing

Article posted February 17, 2009 at 04:23 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 823

Hi everyone,

Last Friday was the first day of Friday writing for Ms. Fisher and her class in Pennsylvania. Ms. Fisher's class joins with my class and Mr. Ellis in North Battleford.  Mr. Ellis and I have been working together for just over a year and welcome another teacher to post Friday writing assignments. Once the writing is posted Mr. Ellis, Ms. Fisher and myself read the student writing and post comments. I look forward to getting to know Ms. Fisher's students through their writing.

Our Friday writing assignments are rather randomly posted writing topics. Sometimes we take topics from the news, current events or projects we're involved in. Other times we look for inspiration  from writing prompts and student interest. The focus is to develop students who write good paragraphs which will allow them to develop their writing skills.

The most recent topic was asking the students what superhero powers they would most like to have. We had a great brainstorming session before the students began to write. If you could have a superpower what would yours be? Read the student blog posts to see who you compare to.

Have a great day,

Ms B

Winter in Saskatchewan

Article posted February 9, 2009 at 09:25 PM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 1186

Hi everyone,

I created a slideshow to show you some of the activities that we do in the winter in Saskatchewan. We do many activities outside depending on the temperature. We only stay inside for recess when the temperature is below -25 degrees celcius with windchill. The students play shinny, hockey without skates and play in the snow. The grade sixes went curling this winter and enjoyed learning the game. We're also getting ready for an outdoor survival trip so we spent part of an afternoon cooking grilled cheese sandwiches on homemade stoves.

Take care,

Friday Writing

Article posted February 6, 2009 at 01:35 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 1236

Hi everyone,

My Friday writing assignment this week is inspired by the Skype calls that my class are making. So far we've spoken to four classrooms in Florida, North Carolina, Nevada and Thailand. Each call has helped us learn about the other students and sometimes we learn about Saskatchewan when we get asked a question we don't know then need to research. Freak has been great at being a backup researcher. Thursday he quickly looked up what our provincial bird was. It's a sharp-tailed grouse. Who knew? Thanks Freak.

So here's today's assignment:

If you could Skype with anyone in the world who would it be & why? What questions would you ask?
Remember that you can call anyone in this imaginary Skype call so let your imagine run wild and have fun.

Next week Ms. Fisher's class in Pennsylvania will be joining us weekly for Friday writing for the remainder of the school year. Ms. Fisher will be posting next Friday's writing assignment. I wonder what it will be?

Have a great day,
Ms B

p.s. Added the video because my class loves to sing along!

Around the World in Eighty Schools

Article posted February 3, 2009 at 06:36 PM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 1162

Hi everyone,

My class has been busy preparing and taking part in Skype calls for the project "Around the World in Eighty Schools." My project was started by Silvia Tolisano (aka langwitches) in Florida. Our first call was to Florida where we learned about the weather there and what sports the students are interested in. Last week we spoke to SanLee Middle School in North Carolina. We asked about their school and activities. This week we're talking to Traner Middle School in Nevada and the International School in Bangkok. We have a 13 hour difference between Regina and Bangkok so it's taken a bit of juggling to arrange the skype call. My class is returning to the school at 5:45pm for a 6:00pm call while the students in Bangkok are arriving for school a half hour early at 7:00am.
I'm really looking forward to speaking to the students in both the schools.

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

I've been sitting with my laptop thinking about Friday writing and wondering what we should write about. The cold weather is making me a little cranky so I thought we should write about something fun and entertaining.

If you could break a Guinness Book of World Records record what would it be? Would you break a record by eating 59 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes like Joey Chestnut?

Maybe you might be like couch potato Suresh Joachim and break the record for the longest time spent watching time. You'll have to sit on the couch for 69 hours and 48 hours to beat him.

The next world record freaks me out a bit, the longest fingernails in the world.

Longest Finger Nails In The World - More free videos are here

Do a little research, see what Guinness World Record you might want to break and write a paragraph describing it. I can't wait to hear about your record breaking ideas.

Good luck,
Ms B

President Obama

Hi everyone,

Yesterday my class and I along with millions of others watched the inauguration of Barack Obama. I wanted to watch history being made and be a small part of that moment in time. One part of his speech that keeps coming back to me is "...60 years ago my father may not have been served in a restaurant..." Times and people have changed but there is still so much change to be made in the world.

If you were able to ask for change what would it be? Would you want change to the economy? energy use? medical care? or something smaller in your local area? Think about my question and leave a comment.

Congratulations America on your choice for a new president.

Take care,
Ms B

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to school and the first Friday writing of the new year.

Do you make New Year's resolutions? What is a resolution? A resolution is a promise. It is a promise that you make to yourself! It is a tradition for people to make resolutions at the beginning of a new year. There are different kinds of resolutions: personal improvement, family and friends or school and the outside world. Whatever your resolution is you need to work at keeping your promise. Don't make a resolution that is too difficult to keep or follow.

My resolution for 2009 is to keep in contact with my friends on a regular basis. I have many friends who live in different cities in Canada and Mexico. I want to email them more often and talk on the phone more than I did last year. For my friends in the city my goal is to call them regularly and keep up to date on what's happening in their lives. I know this doesn't sound like a huge goal but sometimes when my own life gets busy I forget about contacting my friends.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Tonight's the night of the Christmas Concert. We have a dress rehearsal at 1pm and the concert at 7pm. I can't wait to watch your "Evolution of Dance" performance. It should be exciting and fun. I also picked up a surprise for you to wear. Sorry I didn't tell you earlier googlyeyes. I didn't want to spoil the surprise.

If you don't know what the evolution of dance is, have a look at the video. Now, picture a stage full of students with half dressed as reindeer and the other half as elves. The two groups take turns with the dances competing against each other.Should be fun.

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

Welcome to a snowy, wintry and blustery day of Friday writing. Today I want you to think about how you are going to celebrate the holidays with your family. Will you be staying at home or going away? Do you have a large family or a small family? What are some of your favourite things to do over the holidays?

Write about one of the five senses (related to your Christmas or holiday experience):

* The smells of celebration

* The sights of holidays

* The sounds of Christmas

* The touch of winter

* The tastes of celebrations

Whatever way you celebrate the holiday season share a descriptive paragraph about your experiences. I hope that I can experience your holiday celebrations through your descriptive words.

I had to add this Mr. Bean video. I watch this video every year and still laugh at it.

Gingerbread Project

Hi everyone,

Today we will be meeting with our grade 1&2 buddies to work on the Gingerbread Project. This afternoon I want you to start planning your Gingerbread movie. You will need to decide what type of story you are going to tell and plan the scenes out on the story planner. Think about what you want your characters to say to each other. Don't forget to plan the background for your scenes. Where is your story going to take place? There are many things for you and your grade 1 or 2 partner to plan out. After you spend some time planning you will have to time to work on the new animation site: goanimate. Have fun and think about how you can use this technology to make your movie.

Have a great day!

Hi everyone,

We are studying WWII in Social Studies and flight in Science. We have briefly discussed Pearl Harbor and how that action prompted the United States to enter the war. December 7th, 1941 was the day of the attack. We will discuss Pearl Harbor at school next week. If you have time this weekend start doing some research. Why do you think Japan decided to attack Hawaii? How did the planes fly from Japan to Hawaii?

Have a look at some videos. One is a newsreel and the second is from a Pearl Harbor documentary.

Hi everyone,

Today is the first day of December which means only three more weeks of school until Christmas holidays. The next three weeks are jam packed with activities, events and class projects. Will we fit everything in? Only time will tell.

Today we will be writing about Rosa Parks and her important actions that occurred on December 1st.

This week we are starting our "Gingerbread Project" with the grade 1&2 class. The "Gingerbread Project" is another Project by Jen event. Does everyone think they can create a Gingerbread mini movie with their grade 1 or 2 partmer? You will have to keep checking out our Project by Jen link for updates of our project activities during the month.

I hope everyone has their French done because Le Calendrier is due today.

I hope you're having a good short week at school. My class wrote their Friday writing from last week yesterday and now we're back again. Today's writing assignment is rather random but I hope you have fun with it.

What would happen if you could fly whenever you wanted? When would you use this ability?

Hmmm...I'll have to think about what I would do if I could fly. I probably would fly somewhere hot on the weekends to relax from my work week of teaching. But it might be faster if I could teleport myself.

Remembrance Day

Hi everyone,

This is one of my students' favourite Remembrance Day videos.

Our school service is this morning at 11am. Each class will lay a wreath, there will be poems and Remembrance Day readings. We usually have a lot of members of our community at our service to help us remember our veterans and fallen soldiers.

Last night I was running in Wascana Park with my friend. We stopped to walk past the Legislative Buildings and read the names of soldiers who fought bravely in World War I. The names are being shown on the front wall of the Legislative Building as part of Vigile 1914 - 1918 Vigil.

"At sunset November 4th through to sunrise November 11th, this site will present a vigil commemorating the 68,000 Canadians who lost their lives in WWI. The names of the 68,000 war dead will be projected over a week of nights onto the National War Memorial in Ottawa, buildings in other regions of Canada and onto the side of Canada House in Trafalgar Square in London, England." source:

Hi everyone,

We've started reading the novel "Number the Stars" which is set in Denmark during World War II. The Nazi's are occupying Denmark and have collected the names of the members of the synagogues in order to relocate them. Ellen Rosen has moved in with her neighbours and hopes she will be safe. We are also studying Hitler's rise to power, the Holocaust and World War II in Social Studies. During the next week we will be talking about Remembrance Day, November 11th, and why we should never forget the sacrifices our armed services personnel made and are still making for us.

It's a Cold Monday Morning!

Hi everyone,

What a windy weekend it was? Did anyone get blown away in the wind gusts? I was supposed to run yesterday morning but I didn't want to fight the 50km-68km winds. Did anyone go to the Rider game on Saturday? I can only imagine how windy it was but despite that the Riders won. When I woke up this morning it was -14 degrees celcius. Brrrr! The high for today is supposed to be 4 degrees celcius. I hope everyone dresses warm today. I think I'll have to get a warm hat out to wear.

This is going to be a busy week at Haultain. We are going to be working on ecosystem research in order to prepare reports. Remember you can present your information in any way. A poster, report, iMovie, jumpcut, use comic life or a key note presentation. I'll post the due date today.
Tomorrow morning our university students are here and we're also having a math integration with the grade 2/3 class. Thursday afternoon at 1pm is the celebration assembly. Friday morning I'll be working on the reading inventories with individual students while there is a substitute teacher in the classroom. Then, if you've forgotten, Friday is Halloween so don't forget to wear orange and black to school. Whoo! I'll have to plan a spooky writing assignment.

Have a great day!

Web 2.0 and You

Article posted October 17, 2008 at 05:10 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 5873

Hi everyone,

We've had a busy week completing a video that we entered in a contest to win computer hardware and software for our school.

We made a list of the web 2.0 tools that we use in our classroom during the school year. We also made a list of what projects we've been part of.

Today I want you to think about what web tools you've been using and explain why you like them. Should other students and teachers use them in school? What subject do you think your web tool would work best with?

I've been using iMovie to make our video then loading the video on YouTube so this week YouTube has been my favourite web tool. I had to learn how to convert the iMovie to a QuickTime movie to upload which wasn't too hard. I think you could use YouTube in all subject areas to record ideas, tell a story or make a film instead of a report.

Looking forward to reading your blog posts,
Ms B

Hi everyone.

I may have mentioned that we have a classroom weather station. Mr Riech, our caretaker, mounted the weather station's sensors on our school roof. We have two electronic monitors to receive the weather information in our classroom. Last week we were lucky to be able to check out our weather monitors and see what they looked like mounted to collect  weather data. Have a look at our pictures of our adventures.

We are studying Ecosystems in Science and we've added cactii to our class plant collection. We're learning how the plants in a desert ecosystem survive and trying to re-create the ecosystem to keep our plants healthy.

We also have a worm composting bin our classroom. The pre-k class comes to visit us so that they can feed our worms. We are learning about decomposers, ecosystems, life cycles and the food web with our bin. Plus it's fun to play around in the compost looking for worms.

We've also been busy working on the Blogging Challenge with all of our partners around the world. Thanks for all of the comments we've been receiving. It's been great getting to know the students participating.

Hope everyone's having a fantastic week,

Ms B

Friday Writing

Article posted October 2, 2008 at 04:45 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 4555

Hi everyone,

I think it's really Mr. Ellis' turn for assigning the Friday writing but in my dazed state as a teacher I sent him an email saying that I would do it this week. Oh well...c'est la vie and all of those sayings when life just happens.

Today I want to ask how all of the students in my class and Mr. Ellis' class feel about doing on-line projects or collaborations. Our Friday writing is a collaborative on-line project because we're working together on the same writing assignment each week then providing feedback in the form of comments to each other. Do you like writing on your blog page? Do you like receiving comments from the teachers and other students? Do you think you enjoy writing more because other people will actually read what you're writing? I know. So many questions and only a paragraph to answer them in. I'm looking forward to reading your responses.

Hope everyone is having a great week,

Ms B

P.S. We've been busy participating in O.R.E.O week since Monday. The whole school has been focused on Oreo cookie literacy and numeracy activities. It's been a yummy week! I'll be uploading pictures and writing to our projectsbyjen ning soon.

Terry Fox

Article posted September 25, 2008 at 10:21 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 4558

Hi everyone,

Friday, September 26th is Terry Fox National School Run Day in Canada. Every year schools are invited to collect pledges, plan activities and run in their community in the memory of Terry Fox. If you're not familiar with Terry fox this is a good video to learn about his quest. The Terry Fox Foundation counts on the help of Canadians to raise funds every year to aid in cancer research.

About Terry Fox Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, a community near Vancouver on Canada's west coast. An active teenager involved in many sports, Terry was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope.

After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada's Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario. It was a journey that Canadians never forgot. However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22.The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning. To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world. Source: Official Terry Fox Run site.

What is something you believe in? Do you think you could do what Terry Fox did if you were in his situation? Describe a situation where you had to do something you didn't think you could do. Think about school, home, sports or friends. How were you able to do something you weren't comfortable with or that was hard?

I'm looking forward to read your responses. I know this is a difficult assignment but I know you can all do it. Ms B

Blogging Challenge: Week #1

Article posted September 22, 2008 at 02:15 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1875

Hi everyone,

Here's the blogging challenge for week #1. I copied the information from Miss Wyatt's blog page A blog is all about you beginning and continuing a conversation with your readers. Because you can’t meet face to face (f2f), somewhere on your blog, you will need to introduce yourself.  There is usually a page called “About” or “About Me” in your sidebar.

Activities to choose from for week 1

1.  Write about yourself or your class on your “About” page.  Remember though to be internet savvy.  Check out these sites for what to say or not say. Here are some examples of students and teachers who have already introduced themselves to their readers.   (Some themes don’t have pages, so you might have to write a post instead to introduce yourself or your class. )

2.  Any words in orange relate to blogging in case you want to begin a class blogging glossary.

3.  Why did you choose the theme for your blog?  Have you looked at some others?  What were some good or bad points?  Check out this post about the themes used with Edublogs. You  might want to write a post about your choice of theme or make a comment here at this blog.

4. What does your tagline say about your blog?  My class one says: Using Web2.0 in Miss Wyatt’s room  My class blog is all about showing my students lots of things they can learn or have a go at while using Web2.0 tools. Maybe you need to think about what your blog is about and choose an appropriate tagline.

5. How do the introductions of Sue Waters and Miss W. differ? They are both teachers yet one gives out more personal information than the other.  Why?

Reminder: Remember to write stubc08 somewhere in your post or comment. Keep a copy of any comments in a word document or something similar otherwise your teacher won’t know if your writing has improved or not.

You do not have to do every activity for this week.  Just complete at least one of them.

Everyone will have an opportunity to write their blogging challenge blog post this week. Keep track of what you're writing so that I may assess your improvement.

Have a great week,

Ms B

Friday Writing: Who's My Hero

Article posted September 19, 2008 at 04:26 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 1812

Hi everyone,

For today's Friday Writing you need to read Mr. Ellis' blog post. One of Mr. Ellis' childhood heros died yesterday at the age of 69. Ron Lancaster was quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and coach for the Edmonton Eskimos.

When I think about who my hero might be I have a difficult time narrowing it down. Through my life I've admired various people for different reasons. When I was young I thought Quincy M.D. from a tv show was great and I thought I would grow up to be a coroner. Yuch! In high school I admired Diane Jones Konihowski who was an Olympic athlete competing in the pentathalon. As my interests changed so did my heros. Right now my hero is my friend Carol. Carol retired from nursing in the spring at the age of sixty one. She then began training to run a half-marathon, training to hike Machu Pichu and practicing to be part of a northern canoe trip. Carol is my hero because she makes the most of life.

Have a great weekend,

Brillante Weblog

Article posted September 15, 2008 at 02:20 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 2636

Hi everyone,

This weekend I received an email from Mr. Greenberg in Conneticut. This is part of his email.

Congratulations! The Brainwaves have nominated your blog as a “Brilliante Weblog”. We love reading your blogs, they inspire and motivate us.

Let me end by quoting Amanda Marinan, teacher of the 2MGems, who nominated us.

“All of (your) blogs are home to children like us, using 21st century tools to share their learning and engage in conversations with others...and of course, they are home to awesome teachers too!

I was very happy to receive this email because it's telling us that our blogs are read and enjoyed. Congratulations everyone!

This week continue to read the Dragon Blogs', Mr. Ellis's class and also Mrs. Lowe's class in Australia. You'll have to look back in Mrs. Lowe's students blogs because they did this assigment in February when they started school. See what is different and what you have in common with all of these different students.

Have a good day everyone,

Fun Friday Writing

Article posted September 12, 2008 at 02:13 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1783

Hi everyone,

Welcome to a twist on Friday writing. I found an interesting assignment on the Dragon Blogs

site and thought that we could all participate.

7 Random Facts

Dearest Dragons,

I  love this assignment. 7 Random Facts gives us a chance to look for connections around the world. We post 7 things about us, everybody else posts 7 things about themselves...we go around the world and leave comments!

It's supposed to be fun and supposed to teach us how to leave appropriate comments with other classes around the world.

So now....we wait.

We wait until the other classrooms have posted their 7 Random Fact assignments, then we start our search.

Enjoy, Love Prof. McG

Now for part two of today's writing.

Once you are finished your written assignment go to the Dragon Blogs web page and read the 7 Random Facts that her students have posted. Please add comments to her students. Do you have anything in common with the students, are some of the facts the same or are they really different? Don't forget to say who you are and what school you're from in your comment. Hopefully her students will comment back to you.

Have a great Friday,

Ms. B.

p.s. The forecast for Regina today is a sunny 25 degrees celcius!

Narrative Writing: Predictions for the Future

Article posted September 9, 2008 at 02:13 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1423

Hi everyone,

We're starting the school year working on narrative writing. The first assignment was to write a story about a teenager who is told a prediction about their future. We had fun brainstorming ideas about how the prediction would be made. Would the teenager visit a fortune teller with a crystal ball, have their tea leaves read or open a fortune cookie with startling results? Keep watching the student blogs for their stories. We also invite you to provide comments and feedback.

We're also busy working in our other subject areas and starting to settle into the school year. In Social Studies we are working on a Global Village unit with a focus on Interdependence and   participating in a year long Global Citizen project. All classes are invited to join our Global Citizen project at any time during the school year and participate in the monthly challenges. We are currently working on the September theme of water in the world.

Have a great day,

Ms B

Delicious Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

This Friday Mr. Ellis is in charge of the writing assiginment. Have a look at Mr. Ellis' blog page for his mouth-watering writing challenge. Remember you need to add a title to your writing and write a complete paragraph.

This summer we've been eating a lot of fresh vegetables. One of my favourite summer activities is to walk to the Farmer's Market and choose sumptuous, juicy, heirloom tomatoes. I also purchased green and yellow zuchinis, mushrooms, garden onions and shiny peppers to grill on the barbeque. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. My husband would chop up the vegetables, put them in a bowl and toss the mixture with olive oil and freshly, squeezed lime juice. After that he would put the glistening mix into a grill basket to simmer on the barbeque. This is a favourite of our family and friends. What is your favourite food to grill on the barbeque?

Have a good weekend,

First Friday Writing!!!

Article posted August 29, 2008 at 02:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 1690

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the first Friday writing of the new school year! I'm really happy to be back at school (I always was one of those crazy people who loved school) and I hope you're excited to get started on our Friday writing.

At the beginning of the school year I'm always planning, plotting and thinking about what I want to accomplish this year. I think about the units I want to teach, the projects I think the students will enjoy working on and the new ways I can make learning fun. I want to enjoy my day as much as everyone else so I work really hard to make the school day interesting while at the same time making sure everyone is learning. I hate to say it but sometimes I wake up at night and start thinking about all of this. It's very scary let me tell you.

Today I want you to think about your goals for this school year. What areas do you want to improve in? Do you want to increase your reading level or master division? Do you want to play for the school basketball team? Do you want to develop a following on your blog page and create a network of  friends online?

Once you have your goals for the school year made. How are you going to accomplish your goals? What steps do you need to take and think about who can help you. Remember the sky is the limit because these are your goals.

Have a great school year everyone,

Ms B

Welcome Back!!!

Article posted August 26, 2008 at 07:16 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 926

Hi everyone,

I've been reading websites and looking for information to help me prepare for back to school. While touring the web I came across Angela Maiers page and found some great thoughts for back to school.

  • Ask Questions- not only content but one another

  • Collaborate-with one another, other classrooms, and other worlds that exist outside of their classroom walls

  • Create-not with cotton balls and pipe cleaners, but with their minds. Is their imagination ignited, will their curiosity be peaked, will creativity be a valued ingredient in their classroom?

  • Talk-about issues that matter most, about big ideas, and things that can change the world

  • Feel Proud-real pride comes with ownership. Who "owns" their classroom?  Who owns the learning?

  • Think-not just memorize and regurgitate, but really think! Do they "get-to" grapple, struggle, and experience the breakthrough that often follows?

  • Share-their opinions, their thoughts, their wonders, and most importantly share their hearts.

This list made me think about my goals for you as students for the upcoming school year. What do you think? Send me a comment and share your thoughts for a new year in grade 6 & 7.

See you Thursday,

Ms B

Back to School

Hi everyone,

It's time to get back the lovin' feeling for school! I'm back to school next Monday while I'll see all of you on Thursday. I haven't gone in to check on our SmarBoard so I guess I'll be surprised and see if it's installed on Monday morning. I've been working on planning projects for back to school. I've been emailing Michelle Mock at Imagiverse about the fall postcard projects and the hands projects. I think we should particpate again. I've also been registering us for projects with Projects by Jen including a "Room with a View" which is a year long photo project.

I'm really looking forward to the school year and the new collaborative projects we'll be working on. I'm sure we're going to meet some great classes and learn about new places in the world. So you better warm up your computer skills and get ready to explore the world.

See you next Thursday,

Ms B

p.s. Is everyone ready for some Steve Spangler Sceince demos?

Summer News

Article posted July 21, 2008 at 03:33 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 9073

Hi everyone,

Thanks for everyone who has been visiting our class blog while we've been on summer holidays. I can't believe we've already been away from school for three weeks.

So, what's everyone been doing? I was in Mexico for three weeks and returned home last night. While we were away our dog, Wizard, was frightened by fireworks for July 1st and destroyed one of the seat cushions from our couch. Now I have to figure out how to get it replaced. Right now our couch looks kind of odd without one of the cushions to sit on. We had a great time on our trip. We snorkelled on the ocean, rode our bikes around, went to fiesta every Sunday night in the town square, ate great food and relaxed on the beach.

Has anyone started to think about school yet? I'm getting excited about our new SmartBoard. I hope it will be installed by the time we get back at the end of August. Keep your fingers crossed.

Send me a comment and let me know how your summer's going. Miss everyone,

Ms B

Hi everyone,

I can't believe we are only one day away from the last day of school. Some of the highlights this year were all of our successes using Web 2.0 tools, our trip to the Science Centre and Imax, the contacts and network we've created around the world and our class camp.

Have a look at our trip on

Animoto

What a great year we had. Have a great summer and good luck next year,

Grade 6 & 7 News for the Second Last Week of School

Article posted June 16, 2008 at 04:26 AM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 6447

Hi everyone,

I can't believe it's been a week since I wrote on the blog. I loved reading all of your reflections about our camping trip last week. I share your thoughts about the food. It was great! I can't thank Eleanor enough for the fabulous meals she made us. I'll never forget the chocolate brownies, cheescake and puff wheat cake. Oh, it sounds like it was dessert that really was my favourite.

I've been downloading all of the pictures I took at camp and now I'm uploading them to Animoto. I hope to have a video finished by Monday.

I've also been working at posting the "Thriller" video. I hope I'll be able to do it Monday as well. If not I can show everyone it at school because I made it into an IMovie.

Don't forget that we have our Talent Show on Monday at 2:30pm. Who's performing? We also have our multi school track meet all day Tuesday at Douglas Park. So far the weather forecast is saying that we're going to have an amazing day. Keep your fingers crossed.

That's all for now. See everyone tomorrow morning,

Ms B

Circle Square Ranch

Article posted June 7, 2008 at 03:12 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1051

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great day off on Friday while I was at school sitting in a staff meeting and getting ready for camp. I spoke to Robin, the camp director, and asked him all of your questions so here are the answers:

  • there is a boardwalk by the stables that you can skateboard on if you want but he's not sure how great it would be. Bring your skateboards if you want.

  • there is a pond that you can go fishing in.

  • you can bring your IPod or mp3 for the bus, free times or the cabin at night. No cell phones.

  • mac_10 asked about his guitar. Bring it if you want.

  • we will have a campfire each night with campfire snacks. mmm....s'mores!

  • you have to wear long pants (jeans) and shoes for riding horses.

  • we can swim only if my daughter is able to drive out. She's our lifeguard.

Send a comment on this blog post if you have any more questions and I'll answer back. Keep checking the weather so we know what to expect.

I was also speaking to Miss Schuster about the Thriller dance on Thursday afternoon. The students from Coronation Park school will be arriving around 1:45pm. Prior to that you will be getting dressed and getting your zombie makeup down by Ms Donais and helpers. Once everyone is here you will be performing in the gym. Media has been invited so it should be very exciting. I'll be videotaping it and taking digial pictures that can be made into a movie. You need to know the following:

  • you have to have a signed media release form to perform.

  • you are asked to wear zombie clothes. Check with your parents about what clothes you can use.

  • parents are invited to come to school and watch

  • if you don't have a media release and aren't part of the dance you will not be allowed in the gym. You will be working in another room in the school.

On Friday afternoon the entire school is going swimming at the Sandra Schmirler pool. We have the pool booked from 1-3pm.

If you can't remember about the media release ask you parent's to write me a note. Also, it can't hurt to ask them to write a note giving permission to swim on Friday afternoon. Because we're away for three days of the week it's going to make it hard for us to get all of the permissions and information notes home.

Okay, I think that's enough information for a Saturday morning. Have a great weekend and I'll see everyone Monday morning!

Friday Writing Reflection

Article posted June 5, 2008 at 04:34 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1266

Hi everyone,

It's been a wonderful five months of writing with two classes. I know that I've enjoyed the experience of working with Mr. Ellis and his class during our Friday writing assignments. I really liked being surprised  when I read Mr. Ellis' writing assignments and the way students were always challenged to think and writing about new topics. My favourite part of Friday writing was reading Mr. Ellis' students' blog posts and writing comments to them. Through the writing I feel like I know the students in the class. I also like when the students in Mr. Ellis' class write to me and talk about what they're doing in school or home. I look forward to starting our writing again when school starts and getting to know a new group of students.

So, that's the assignment this week everyone. I would like everyone to think about the last five months of Friday writing. What are your thoughts about the writing assignments? Do you like to receive feedback from a different teacher and other students? Reflect on what were some favourite assignments and comments.

I'll miss working with the Connaught students and wish them luck next year.

Have a great day everyone,

Ms B

Has anyone started looking at the long range forecast? Remember if you're curious about where we're camping you can check out Circle Square Ranch on the web.

There's also a school dance this Thursday afternoon for the entire school which is a fun way to end a short school week.

Hi everyone,

I think Mr. Ellis had fun with today's writing assignment. Check out his blog page and complete the assignment in your Friday Writing Book before you post it. I think you're going to have fun!

It was a great science class yesterday but what a mess! Thank you to everyone who lent a hand cleaning up the family room. It's hard to tell that we were making flubber in there and that every surface of the room had goo on it. Congratulations to the two groups who presented their science demonstrations yesterday. You did a really good job. The remainder of the demonstrations need to be completed next week.

Have a great day and a great weekend,

A Year at Haultain

Article posted May 26, 2008 at 03:45 AM GMT0 • comment (6) • Reads 2739

Hi everyone,

My class has been creating Animoto videos for their final project for the "Change" unit in social studies. Their assignment was to show something changing. Students chose various topics such as: fashion, runners, technology, Winnie the Pooh, and the continents. Keep watching for the videos to be posted to the student blogs.

I decided to create an Animoto video for our Thursday assembly. My video showcases many events that happened in our school over the 2007-2008 school year. To create my video I downloaded 117 pictures from my IPhoto library then I added music from the Animoto site. I can't wait to show it to the entire school this week. Here's a sneak preview:

Hi everyone,

With summer vacation getting closer I'm sure everyone is thinking about their travel plans whether it's close to home or far away. I love planning trips and have one planned for Cozumel, Mexico. I leave on June 27th at 6:40pm. I haven't started to count the sleeps yet but I will soon. So here's today's Friday writing assignment:

If you could travel any place in the world, where would you go? Who would you like to bring along with you. Write a paragraph explaining the reasons you are choosing that place and what you expect to do there.

I can't wait to hear all of the wonderful places you want to visit. If you have time add a picture or a short video clip.

Hasta luego amigos,

Hi everyone,

Today we took some time to use some new avatar sites. I tried out the Lego avatars at reasonablyclever.com and I found it tricky to copy to an png picture but with a little perserverence I got it.

Students are also creating vokis for their blogs. It was a great last hour of the day.

Wish me luck posting my Lego avatar.

Friday Writing

Article posted May 9, 2008 at 02:24 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 1282

Hi everyone,

Mr. Ellis has posted this Friday's writing assignment. You will have to do a bit of research and a lot of thinking before you respond to his blog post.

We've been receiving quite a few comments from our partners in the comment challenge as well as from Geelong, Australia. You will need to check your blog posts for new comments because the comments aren't only on your newest blog posts. Take time to respond back and create a discussion with the people who comment to you.

Today we will be working with the grade 2&3 class to finish their dragon stories. If the story is already written on Google documents please take time to edit, revise and add more details. We want to be able to post the journals to the grade 2&3 blogs.

Have a great day everyone,
Ms B

Comment Challenge 08

Article posted May 6, 2008 at 02:51 AM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 1439

Hi everyone,

I was looking for articles and ideas for writing good comments. I came across this blog post from the ProBlogger blog called 10 Techniques to Get More Comments.

ProBlogger states:
"The vast majority of readers leave a blog without leaving a comment or contributing to it in any way.
To some extent this is just the way it is and we probably need to just get used to it - however when it comes to comments there are some ways to encourage more interactivity on your blog.
I've included the first three suggestions:

1. Invite Comments - I notice that when I specifically invite comments that people leave them in higher numbers than when I don’t.

2. Ask Questions - Including specific questions in posts definitely helps get higher numbers of comments.

3. Be Open Ended - If you say everything there is to say on a topic you’re less likely to get others adding their opinions because you’ll have covered what they might have added.

Have a great day everyone. I'll be checking in and looking at your stories on the MS1001 site. I'll also be reading the Dragon Stories on Google documents.

See you Wednesday,
Ms B

Friday Writing

Hi everyone,

Welcome to another addition of Friday writing.

Today's assignments is about social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, MySace and blog sites. Watch the video. Do you have a Facebook account? What type of information do you have posted? Have you ever wondered if it's a good or bad idea to list everything about yourself for anyone to look at? Have you ever been contacted by someone you didn't know? Do you ever worry about Internet safety? I have a Facebook account and occassionally I have someone ask to be my friend that I don't really know. I also don't use my Facebook account often or put a lot of information on it.

I know I'm asking a lot of questions. I'll be curious to see your answers.

Have a great Friday,
Ms B

Comment Challenge

Article posted May 1, 2008 at 02:18 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 631

Good morning everyone,

Ready or not we are part of a classroom comment challenge.

From Mr. Fisher in Manitoba:

"Today is May 1st and the field is wide open. The comment challenge runs until the end of May and there are really no set rules. We all do not need to be doing the same thing. Some suggestions for activities that have been left on the wiki are:

- Simply challenge students to leave the most comments for others in their class (give them comment starters so you don't end up with a bunch of "hi lols")
- Challenge them to leave the most comments on the blogs of students from others classes
- Challenge students to leave the longest comments
- Challenge students to leave comments for students in as many different places as possible (give each student a map or keep a classroom map that you can put push pins in
- Get students to find several (3-4?) students in other classes and work intensely with just these people, leaving repeated comments for them, beginning more indepth conversations
- Have students save all of their comments in one place (a google doc?) and at the end of the 30 days, have them evaluate how their comments have changed or improved, having them pick their best ones - a comment portfolio!"

So class, what do you think? How should be set up our comment challenge? Let's talk about it this morning and make our plans.

Happy Monday!

Hi everyone,

Today is our first day without Miss Spencer. I'm sure she's sleeping in this morning and planning a relaxing day. Do you think she misses us yet?

I really enjoyed reading all of your blog posts last week about Earth Day. I also liked the videos that some of you posted about Earth Day. Dude's really made me laugh and gangstadaddy's was though provoking.

This morning we're going to try swtiching our schedule. The grade sixes will start the morning with language arts while the grade sevens have math. After recess we'll flip. I want to try it this week and see if it helps me teach math better. I always feel pulled in two directions if I'm teaching both grades math at the same time.

Here's something to think about:

Did you laugh when you saw the video? I do every time but I also see the point the video is making. What do you think the message of the video is? Send me a comment and let me know.

Hi everyone,

For today's writing have a look at Mr. Ellis' blog. After you complete your writing please add an image or short video to your blog post that depicts the way you would like to make a change for the earth.

I'm sorry to say that today is Miss Spencer's last day with us. It's been a wonderful four months and we've been so lucky that she's interned in our class. Miss Spencer is now officially completed her university degree and will be able to start teaching as soon as the paperwork is complete. Please wish Miss Spencer good luck in her teaching career. I hope we'll see her again soon.

Friday Writing on Thursday

Article posted April 17, 2008 at 04:10 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 433

Hi everyone,

Today we are doing our writing Friday because tomorrow is a school PD Day. Please look on Miss Spencer's blog page for today's writing assignment.

Today we will start reading our new novel "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis. Here's a little bit about the book.

Parvana felt the shadow before she saw it, as the man moved between her and the sun. Turning her head, she saw the dark turban that was the uniform of the Taliban. A rifle was slung across his chest as casually as her father's shoulder bag had been slung across hers...
The Talib kept looking down at her. Then he put his hand insdie his vest. Keeping his eyes on Parvana, he drew something out of his vest pocket.
Parvana was about to squish her eyes shut and wait to be shot when she that the Talib had taken out a letter.
He sat down besider her on the blanket.
"Read this," he said.

This is a really good book. It will make you think about your life and how different it is from Parvana's. I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I did.

Another Beautiful Day!

Hi everyone,

I hope that everyone had a chance to get outside yesterday to enjoy the fantastic day. But, if you thought yesterday was great today is going to be even warmer. The forecasted high for today is 28 degrees celcius (88F). If the temperature reaches 28 it will be a record setting day. The high temperature of 26.4 celcius was set in 1963. Do you think we'll beat it?

I know there are assignments that need to be finished this week for Miss Spencer. I hope that everyone is working hard. Have you had a chance to research Afghanistan and the Taliban? You will need to understand about the country and it's political history when you're reading our next novel "The Breadwinner."

Have a fabulous day today,

We will be starting to read a new novel shortly. The novel is called "The Breadwinner" and the author is Deborah Ellis. Take some time to research the book and read a summary about it. Also, begin researching Afghanistan and the Taliban. We will be studying these topics along with the book. We will be learning how to write expositories or opinion style of writing.

Don't forget to bring your pizza orders in by Monday. Pizza lunch is next Thursday.

Welcome back everyone,

I had a wonderful Easter week break. My daughter and I spent a week on the island of Cozumel in Mexico. I can't wait to go back. What did everyone else do on their break?

We've been contacted by a teacher and class in Russia. Ms Tarasevich's class has been reading our blog page to help them learn English. I've added a link to their blog about their town and events in Russia. Please read their blog. Add a comment and introduce yourself.

Many of you have also been receiving comments from our blogging partners. Take time this week to comment back to people who have left messages for you. Also, don't forget your Iditarod project partners. Write them a note this week.

As we receive our "Hands Around the Blue Marble" and postcards from around the world I'd like you to think about your impact on the earth.
April 22nd is Earth Day around the world. I've added a short video to start you thinking about how we can start to make changes in our day to help the planet.

Lance Mackey Wins the 2008 Iditarod

Article posted March 13, 2008 at 05:26 PM GMT0 • comment (8) • Reads 472

Double trouble; Mackey wins again!
Date: March 12, 2008 at 3:01 am

NOME — The incredible Lance Mackey has done it again.

“I feel like I earned this one a little more,” he said at the finish line of Iditarod 36 as thousands of fans flocked the burled arch on Front Street, cheering and chanting “Mackey! Mackey! Mackey!”

He crossed the finish line with a strong string of 11 dogs at 2:46 a.m. March 12, winning the Iditarod in 9 days, 11 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds.

Following up on a storybook year in 2007 of unmatched greatness against unbelievable odds — winning the Yukon Quest and Iditarod back to back on a shoe-string budget wearing the same bib number of his father and brother when they won the race — Mackey has again claimed victory in both the Quest and Iditarod. Back-to-back double doubles.

Monday is the big day! The weather forecast is looking good for us to be outside all day. I'm looking forward to spending the day at Echo Valley in the warm winter sun. I've just been getting my gear organized and I've got two extra tarps, rope and assorted clothing. I was at the store on Saturday and picked up fire starters, 9 volt batteries, steel wool and extra orange garbage bags.

Don't let me forget to bring cameras so we have pictures for the Imovie. Plus Miss Spencer and I want to use VoiceThread to record our memories of our trip.

I can't wait. Have a good sleep and be ready for a busy, fun day.

Welcome to another episode of Friday writing. Please look at Miss Spencer's blog page for today's assignment.

Keep up the good work writing your musher updates. It's exciting to see what checkpoint your musher is at. Don't forget to read the updates on the Iditarod site to find out what's going on in the race. Our class has a large map with each musher represented as a race dog. Each day the dogs are moved according to where they are in the race. Mushers are moving towards checkpoint Cripple For a twenty four hour mandatory rest.

Iditarod Blog Posts

Hi everyone,

Please make sure to read my last blog about how to write a good posting about your musher and the race. Some of you are still forgetting to tell your audience who your musher is.

Here's an example of a good blog post by darf:

Iditarod...Gerald Sousa.
Well my racer sadly moved back a bit from the race.Gerald Sousa was in 30th place...he's now in 35th place. How did he move back 5 postions in
one night? Gerald's next checkpoint will be at ''Nikolai''.Gerald still has all 16 dogs in. You think they might get a little bit tired
though? Gerald and his dogs are traveling at the speed of ''5.42 mph''.They slowed down a bit so I think Gerald's dogs are a bit tired.Maybe he should let them rest a little.

darf has added race information, asked questions and offered her opinion. Good writing darf!

Iditarod Blog Posts

Article posted March 4, 2008 at 03:32 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 406

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder about what makes a good blog post:

Title

Topic: What are you writing about? Don't make your audience guess.

Audience: Remember that you have an audience. Write for them.

Information: Add information such as your mushers name, what checkpoint they are at, how many dogs are they racing with, what are the weather conditions or anything else that is interesting.

Edit: Check your spelling!

You will need to write a short post each day with race updates. Don't forget to move your dog on the large map.

For race information go to The Official Iditarod Race Site you will find the link on our wiki. You can also google race news or the Anchorage Daily News. You can log in on the Iditarod site for live video.

Please ask if you have any questions. Happy racing!

Iditarod Starts Saturday, March 1st!

Article posted February 29, 2008 at 01:24 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 369

Hello everyone,

The Iditarod Trail Dog Race officially starts Saturday, March 1st in Anchorage, Alaska. I hope everyone gets a chance to check out the official Iditarod site for race information tomorrow as well as, the Anchorage Daily News. Both links are on the wiki.

Starting next week I hope that everyone has a chance to check the daily race updates on the Iditarod site and follow their mushers. My class will be posting updates and race information on their blogs. We'll also need to post updates on the race chart. We've had two mushers withdraw from the race so I hope that these groups will choose another musher to follow.

The next two weeks will be a chance to catch up on work that isn't completed. Teachers will be assigning the creative writing assignments of their choice as time permits.

I would hope that everyone has a chance to look at the final assignment on the creative writing wiki page. Send me your thoughts on it.

Good luck everyone. I hope your mushers do well!

Winter Survival Trip

Article posted February 27, 2008 at 01:31 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 455

Hi everyone,

On Monday afternoon Al Huber from our outdoor education department visited our class. Al was there to prep us for our Winter Survival Trip on March 10th. We are head out to Echo Valley for the day where we will be facing challenges to see if we can "survive."

This is Al's list on how to survive being lost or involved in some type of emergency in the winter:
1. Don't panic!
2. Deal with any injuries: hypothermia, frostbite, bleeding and breaks.
3. Create a shelter. Use a tarp, build a snow quintze or dig in a snow drift.
4. Build a fire.
5. Make an emergency signal: use a bright garbage bag, SOS, and X mark and a Vee shape using 3 piles of rocks. The signals should be 3 metres in size and apart.
6.Eat.

Prior to the trip the groups will need to organize their equipment, plan their meals and practice their first aid skills.

On March 10th the students will be working in groups to see if they can meet the challenges of winter survival. It should be a great day of
group activities and fun in the snow.

Hi everyone,

For today's writing assignment you need to look on Miss Spencer's blog page. Read carefully and write your blog post. I'm curious to read about "What you want to be when you grow up?"

Now, what do I want to be when I grow up? I imagine most of you would consider me a grown up but I look ahead and see so much of life yet to be lived. When I grow up I want to be a better teacher who has infinite amounts of patience and never gets frustrated. Please wish me luck on that one. I want to continue to learn and grow as an educator never being afraid to change. I want to look for more ways to engage students in the classroom and encourage them to stretch beyond their comfort zone. So when I grow up I want to do what I'm doing but just do it a little bit better.

Have a great day!

p.s.

If all else fails I also want to build sand sculptures on a beach in Mexico.

Hi everyone,

Today is Toque Fest at Haultain which means all toques all day. If you're not sure what a toque is just think of a knit winter hat and that's a toque.
At 1 p.m. the whole school is gathering in the gym for a fun mid-winter assembly with Tulip the clown hosting. There are going to be prizes for the best decorated toques in each classroom, dancing and way too much fun. I can't wait.

And if the day wasn't exciting enough we have a pizza lunch at noon in the gym. All students who pre-ordered will meet in the gym for pizza and a movie. I think I'm going to be tired at the end of the day!

We're also starting week #3 of the Iditarod project. This week we're focusing on the geography of the Iditarod race route in Alaska. Check out the Iditarod link to see how hard students in Mr. Ellis , Ms Evan, Mrs. Bashur and my class have been working!

Hi everyone,

Mr. Ellis has posted a great writing assignment this week. Check out his blog to see it.

What is my favourite movie? I have to say I'm a fan of chic flicks with romance and comedy. I watch these movies with my mom and daughter because my husband won't watch any movie that is a "romantic comedy." I also love old Audrey Hepburn movies because she's so beautiful. Okay...down to the favourite well I think it could be a really old movie with Cary Grant called "Arsenic and Old Lace." The movie about Cary Grant's character and his old aunties who poison unsuspecting travellers. Oddly enough it's a comedy. Ms B

Today's writing assignment is on Miss Spencer's blog page. She's going to take over the Friday writing with Mr. Ellis as part of her internship responsibilities.

Congratulations to everyone who's been posting on our Iditarod project. My class had a great day yesterday finishing research, posting maps and beginning to make videos. There was a huge learning curve as we discovered how to post pictures, links, maps, videos and articles on the wiki. I've been enjoying reading what's already been posted and look forward to checking out what's posted today.I've been receiving a lot of emails from Mr. Ellis' class asking questions and telling me what's going on in North Battleford this week.
I'll organize a little video about next week's assignments.

This week my class have been finishing stories about first contact with aliens. The stories are the wrap up to our Space unit. What do you think about aliens?

We're finally getting a break in the weather today. The forecast is for a high of -1 celcius with a breeze. This is the best news I've heard all week. I run on Wednesday nights so I'm really looking forward to getting outside tonight.

We need to be working on our Iditarod project this week and have our postings done be Friday afternoon. I saw that a few of you have notes about Balto and the history of the Iditarod. Mrs. Bashur has placed her students in groups on the wiki so you'll need to contact them if they're in your group. Also, Mr. Ellis has had his students make short videos to introduce themselves. The videos are on your group wiki. I asked Mr. Ellis how he did this so may have to give it a go.

Have a great day everyone. Enjoy the weather!

Thursday at Haultain

Hi everyone,

We're still in a deep freeze. It's -27 degrees but -45 degrees celcius with the windchill. I have to go outside to start my vehicle to get it warm but I have to pysch myself up first. I need to have a cup of coffee before I can even think of going out there.

Today is our last school day for the week, at least for students, teachers are at work tomorrow. Mr. Ellis has posted this weeks writing assignment on his blog page. Be careful! It's tricky. Good luck my young students and may the force, writing that is, be with you.

Stay warm,

Cold, Cold, Cold Day!

Article posted January 29, 2008 at 01:09 PM GMT0 • comment (9) • Reads 407

Hi everyone,

I could have kept going on with the colds but decided to stop. As I was snuggled up in my warm bed this morning the radio announcer was letting us know that it's -51 degrees celcius outside. Let me tell you that's not a very motivating thing to hear when you're trying to get out of bed. I got out of bed, put on my boots and jacket and started my vehicle (pajamas still on). I just checked the Accuweather on the blog page and it's -58 degrees.

There will be school today because as I said yesterday we never close. I wonder who will be joining me in the classroom? Dress warm everyone, don't forget your hats, mitts and scarves.

My question today is: What is a snow day? When do schools close where you are due to bad weather? What do you do on a snow day? Do teachers have to go to school? I have so many questions. Please add a comment to this post and let me know.

Oops...I better go and turn off my vehicle. Still in my pajamas and running outside. Wish me luck!

Keep warm,
Ms B

Winter Storm Warning

Article posted January 28, 2008 at 01:17 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 413

Hi everyone,

Welcome back for another week of school. There's a winter storm warning for today. A storm is blowing in from Alberta bringing colder temperatures and blowing snow. I guess we'll see if it makes it here by this afternoon. And no...for all of you wondering if this means we get a snow day...no. We never have snow days here. It may be snowing and blowing but the schools stay open. Sometimes the rural schools close because it's too dangerous for school buses to travel on the highways. However, city schools never close. Sorry my darling students. Check our Accuweather during the day to see what our weather is doing.

This week we'll continue working on our Space unit, talking about current events, finishing our portrait project and getting prepped for the Iditarod. Miss Spencer is away all day today and Tuesday morning. She'll be back Tuesday afternoon to help you get organized for your portraits. Miss Littlechief will also be helping you.

Have a wonderful day,
Ms B

Iditarod Project

Article posted January 21, 2008 at 01:15 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 493

Hi everyone,

I hope you've had a great weekend and are ready for a busy week at school. Miss Spencer will be taking over the start of everyday for the next few months. She will also begin teaching art. This week we will be finishing our portrait projects, learning about space exploration and finishing Greek mythology.

I've added a link on the left side of the page for the Iditarod project. Has anyone looked at this? We will be working with five other groups on this project: Mr. Ellis in North Battleford, Mrs. Bashour and Mrs. Noshie in Lebanon, Mrs. Evans in Seattle and Ms Hinshaw in Bellingham. You will be working with students from the other classes to complete assignments each week. We will begin the project the first week of February by studying the history of the Iditarod.

Have a great day and keep warm!
Ms B

p.s. Speaking of Iditarod. As I've been looking at weather information about Alaska I've noticed it's colder in Saskatchewan. Right now it is -18 degrees celcius but with a 14kph wind the windchill makes it -27 degrees C. I think we'll be inside for recess.

I just finished reading and listening to Mr. Ellis' Friday writing assignment. It's already got me thinking about what I would do if I had three wishes. I'm definitely going to think about this during my morning with Miss Spencer. Please do your best writing because I can't wait to read about your wishes.

Thank you to the students who have posted comments to my vacation blog. Miss Spencer and I had a good laugh when we were writing our agenda for day one.

Have a great day. I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.

I've been neglectful in answering some of the questions in the comments I've been receiving. I'm doing a group answer so I hope you're all checking on our blog site.

Hi Caitlin, my avatar is from doppleme.com
Hi Goldilocks, I really liked reading your poem.
Mrs. C in Rhode Island I wasn't able to follow your link to your site. Please email me at kimberly.brown@rbe.sk.ca with the information.

Please start checking into the link on the left side about our Iditarod project. We're getting the project organized and we plan on beginning early February. The project is a collaboration between five classrooms, to date, to follow the Iditarod Trail Dog Race that will start March 1st in Alaska. It should be a fun project to work on.

Hi everyone,

I hope that everyone had a good holiday season and a happy new year. We're back to school on Monday, January 7th. I hope that everyone had a chance to check out the night sky during the holidays and are ready to hand in their drawings on Monday.

Miss Spencer will be joining us starting on Monday for four months. I'm so excited about having her in our room. She will begin teaching the grade sixes math.

On Monday be prepared to write about your holidays. Think about the details that you would like to add to make your writing interesting to your blogging audience.

Hasta luego amigos (that might give you a hint about where I went over the holidays),

I am From

Hi everyone,

I've been reading a wonderful poem called "I am From" by SG in the grade five class in Lebanon.
Here's the link:

I target=_blank>
http://www.classblogmeister.com/blog.php?user_id=143111&blogger_id=143185

I challenged my class to produce their own "I am from" poems. It was a great writing experience. This is my own short poem

I am From

I am from a warm, cozy house with two dogs who want us to wake in the morning. I am from comfort and love wrapping around me and keeping me warm. I am from a steamy cup of coffee to prep me for the day. I am from a remote car starter so my car is warm and ready.

I am from a class of eager grade six and sevens. I am from students who are fun and intriguing. I am from a big, old school. I am from an exciting buzz in the hallways.

I am from a cold winter place. I am from snowflakes which fly in my face. I am from clear and starry nights. I am from a province with the Northern Lights.

I am from a cuddly, soft blanket. I am from hot, buttery popcorn. I am from a night with my family. I am from a warm, snuggly bed.

Have a great day,

Why Saskatchewan is Unique

Article posted December 6, 2007 at 01:32 PM GMT0 • comment (7) • Reads 381

Hi everyone,

Last week I had a student pose a question in their comment to me. The student asked for other students to explain one thing that is unique about Saskatchewan, the province we live in in Canada. For this morning's writing assignment I'm posing that question to my students.
So why is Saskatchewan unique?
We are home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders the CFL champions of 2007.
In Saskatchewan I can see badlands, prairie, aspen forest, rolling hills, evergreen forest, glacial valleys, the Canadian shield with it's lakes & rivers and never leave the province.
I can go to the doctor or hospital and not have to pay.
I can get lost in the country side and know that there's a road every mile. The province is set up on a grid road system of roads.
I can see the Canadian Forces Snow Birds at their home base of CFB Moose Jaw.
Regina is home to The First Nations University of Canada as well as the University of Regina. The University of Saskatchewan is in Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan is home to the Plains Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Nakoda and Assiniboine people.

That's my short list. What makes Saskatchewan unique for everyone else is my class?

What makes your area of the world unique?? Let me know?

Snow in Regina

Article posted December 4, 2007 at 01:21 PM GMT0 • comment (5) • Reads 397

Hi,

I've added a new weather feature on the blog page. It's got a lot of information about the current weather, the forecast and a radar map. It's great. I seem to be focused on weather lately because it's changing to winter here rather rapidly and I know it's very different where a lot of our blogging partners live. The long range forecast for most of Canada is snow for all parts of the country for Christmas and a colder than normal winter.

Last night there was sleet mixed with snow. I have a four wheel drive Yukon so I don't usually have much trouble getting around the city.

Happy weather everyone,

Hi everyone,

I'm at a Learning Plus meeting this morning. Learning Plus discusses the integration of technology within the subject areas. We're doing that in our classroom when we use blogging for language arts, wikis for science, podcasts and Garageband. When I go to the meetings I hope to bring more ideas and activities for our classroom.

Don't forget that Survivor #3 is due Monday morning. I'll be looking for them in my "in box" when I return to school at noon.

Have a look at our clustermap because it has been updated. I'm always thrilled to see how many visitors we have to our blog. I also am excited when we have visitors from new countries.

I've had some comments about my weather report from last week. Please look at them and respond to the question about what makes Saskatchewan unique.

Have a great morning and I'll see you after lunch,

Saskatchewan Won the Grey Cup!

Hi everyone,

The Riders are the Grey Cup champions for 2007. I watched the game and saw the Riders win. Even as I'm writing this I can hear cars driving by my house with their horns honking and people cheering. The first half of the game was not too exciting but the second half kept everyone watching and waiting for the outcome. An interception by Saskatchewan late in the game all but guaranteed a Rider win.

Look at this link for Grey Cup pictures:

Hi everyone,

Are you wearing your green & white for school today? It's Riderville all day to get in the spirit for Sunday's Grey Cup in Toronto. Who's going to watch the game? Are you going to a Grey Cup party? I heard on the radio today that there will be a big homecoming on Monday afternoon whether they win or not. The homecoming will be at Mosaic Stadium beginning at 3pm. Wouldn't that be fun to go to? And before you ask, no, I don't think we can make that into a field trip! Go Riders!

On another note, it's report card day today. You're all great students and work hard in school. Report cards recognize your effort and growth that you've made in your subject areas.

Hi everyone,

It's another busy week for Haultain students. Yesterday we were at Balfour Collegiate in the afternoon to watch their drama production of Dracula. Well done Balfour students!

This afternoon we have a presentation from CN Rail about train safety. This will be a repeat for most of you but is obviously needed as there are still students in the school who play around the train tracks. Pretty scary stuff!

Tomorrow afternoon we are at the Mackenzie Art Gallery for a gallery tour. The main show right now is the Joe Fafard showing. A friend of mine told me it is amazing. I can't wait to see it. While we're at the gallery be on the look out for portraits for our project.

I'm away all day on Thursday at a grade seven curriculum meeting. There have been changes being made to the middle years science curriculum and we're going to be a pilot class. I'm really looking forward to the experience.

Report cards go out on Friday. Keep up the good work everyone.

Now between all of these events we still needs to start a new language arts unit, work on our math, start Survivor #3, and complete our community video project. Can we do it all?

Have a great day,
Ms B

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the comments to the news story on my last blog. If you haven't read it you should. It's a powerful way to reinforce "hands off" on the playground.

It was great the Miss Spencer could come and teach yesterday afternoon. I'm really looking forward to her coming and spending four months with us as an intern. At the University of Regina, students in the Education program spend four months interning in a classroom. Miss Spencer will begin teaching two subject areas and slowly add subjects until she is teaching full time for three weeks. After the three weeks she'll begin finishing her subjects and I'll begin teaching them again. It's an exciting time for all of us. We'll add her to our blog page when she arrives and you'll get to hear from her.

Is it snowing anywhere else? It snowed a bit overnight on Tuesday and there's a forecast for a few flurries this morning. It's so sad but I think winter is trying to move in on us. Send me a comment to let me know what the weather is like where you are.

Hi everyone,

I hope that you all had a good weekend and you're ready to get back to school.

Monday night I was watching the news and heard about a fight in a schoolyard that ended with a boy dying. At school we're always talking about "hands off", "talk to a supervisor" and "don't solve problems with violence". I don't know how many times I've talked to students about how to deal with problems on the playground. Read the news story and write me a comment about it. It's a sad story that I hope we can learn from.

Hi everyone,

Today is the last day of school for students until next Tuesday, November 13th. Teachers are at school tomorrow to work on report cards and planning.

What are everyone's plans for the weekend? My daughter and I are going to go to Saskatoon for two days. We are planning on shopping, eating and relaxing. Anyone else going away? My son is leaving for Cuba on Friday. He is traveling with his rugby team, The Rogues, to play exhibition games in Cuba and Trinidad. He will be away for ten days. He's a first year engineering student in university. This week he's been busy doing extra assignments so he's prepared for the week that he misses school. I'll ask him to take pictures for us so we can see what those countries look like.

Remember that your Survivor #2 Report is due on Tuesday, November 13th at 9am. Please take the materials home that you will need to finish your report.

Hi everyone,

I'm so excited about creating our community video. It was cool to speak to Mr. Hurley in California last Friday using Skype. Today we have to work on our scripts and story boards in order to send them to Mr. Hurley this week.

It will be a busy week. Today, tomorrow and Wednesday we'll work on the video. Tuesday morning Ms. Donais will be in the class demonstrating face painting techniques then we'll practice on the pre-k students. Wednesday is Halloween so wear orange, black or purple to school so we can wear a spirit award. You'll need to be working on your Survivor #2 report because it's due on November 6th. This week I'll also be working with all of you completing the reading inventories. Yikes!

Ms Casey sent me a comment from Korea about how she's enjoying our blog page. She asked that you put our blog URL on your comments so her students can comment back. When you comment there is a place for our blog URL so it's a good time to start adding that to all of your comments. It makes it really easy for other students to answer your questions. The URL is:

We'll also start investigating our partner schools and countries for our video project. Today we will be working on writing our scrip for the video. We'll be talking to Mr. Hurley Friday afternoon on a video cast using Skype. I'll set up the data projector and speakers so everyone can see and hear him.

I've updated our science wiki with information about our Science Centre trip. I've added links to some blogs, pictures, a link to The Saskatchewan Science Centre and a link for the movie Hurricane on the Bayou. Now I just have to fix up one picture because it's sideways. I'll try to get on that today.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Hi everyone,

I used the title Warm Wednesday today because it's supposed to be a warm day with temperatures rising to 22 celcius. I hope you all have time to get outside today to enjoy the beautiful fall day.

We need to talk about our video project and plan our script today. We're speaking to Mr.Hurley in California Friday afternoon about our project. We'll also need to prepare some questions for him about our project partners in other parts of the world.

Good work on your fish posters and reports. I'll hand them back today but I would like them returned so I can post them on the science bulletin board.

Continue reading and commenting to our partners' blogs. Remember that we all like our writing to have an audience.

Have a great day,

Hi everyone,

We have another new blogging partner: Mr. Osweiler's class in Virginia in the United States. We will need to mark the location on the world map.

When you blog this week look at Mr. Osweiler's class blog and comment to someone in his class. Tell them about our class, school and community. Also, ask them some questions about where they live.

It was great to have Ms Spencer visit yesterday to meet you. I'm really looking forward to working with her after Christmas.

Hi everyone,

I hope that everyone remembered about their Fish assignment that is due this morning. You've had lots of time to prepare and be ready to hand it in.

Check your comments when you blog this week. You've been getting comments from each other and pretty_brown_eyes27 had comments from Australia.
While you blog this week take time to read the Mrs. Casey's class blog and comment to one of her students.

I'll be handing back the Survivor #1 assignment today. A common error was that students did not read the assignment requirements carefully and missed quite a few labels on the country map. Please make sure you read through Survivor #2 requirements carefully before, during and when you hand in the assignment.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Have a look to learn about how we can all help protect the wetlands.

Hi everyone,

Here we are for another Friday at Haultain! I can't wait to hear about the feeder school volleyball tournament yesterday at Balfour. I'm sure there will be a few stories to share.

This morning we'll be talking about our new books and theme. The theme of the unknown and mysterious seems to fit into the month of October. I hope that everyone is enjoying your book choice. If you're not happy now would be the time to trade books and start a different one. It's definitely takes some practice to choose the right book to read. We'll also continue talking about reading assessments.

This afternoon we have our first visit by our Elder. I haven't met our elder this year so I'm looking forward to the afternoon. After we meet with our Elder we will be working with the grade 2 & 3 class for an integration activity. We will show the group how to make their own Simpson Avatar and we'll print their avatar out for them. After that we'll play math bingo. Each month we'll meet in an integration group for a math activity.

Have a great day everyone,
Ms B

p.s. Don't forget that your Fish poster/report is due on Monday.

Hi everyone,

Today is picture day. I don't know what time our pictures will be taken so just stay looking good all day!

I'm looking forward to reading your Survivor reports and narratives. I'll try to get them all marked for Monday. I'll hand out the next part of the report the day I give them back.

I was really impressed with the still life drawings that everyone was doing yesterday. They're beginning to look like the still life arrangements instead of what you "think" they look like. Good Job!

I hope that everyone is started on their fish report/posters. They are due Monday morning. Please ask if you have questions or are having difficulty finding information.

Have a great day,

Hi everyone,

Good job on your Simpson avatars. They're really cool. If you haven't had an opportunity to do yours please feel free to come into the school early or stay in at recess. Look at everyone's blog and see how they designed their avatar. Gangstadaddy found a new site for creating avatars. I'll look at it and see if we can use it for our next computer & technology class.

Remember when you blog this week you need to blog about our visit to the Science Centre last Friday. Use the writing you did on Friday when we returned. You do not have to write a new entry. I'll edit your work so you're ready to blog.

I hope that everyone has their Survival assignment ready for handing in. You've had lots of time for research and class time for working on your assignment. It's up to you to finish it so it's ready for 9am.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Today is the last day to work on Survivor reports. g ourselves. Check out the link to the Simpsons movie site:http://www.simpsonsmovie.com/

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all ready for our Science Centre trip this morning. Remember to pack a lunch and dress in layers for our workshop this morning. I think we're going to have a exciting day. I can't wait to see the Imax movie this afternoon. Thanks to my two camera volunteers. Take lots of pictures and I'll show you how to download them to the computer so that you can make a slide show.

Congrats to mietosh for figuring out how to embed her Simpsons avatar on her blog page. Have a look because it's cool. The avatars that were emailed to me didn't work out. We'll work on these next week and we'll also have mietosh show us what she did with her avatar. We'll also take everyones picture to see if we can "Simpsonize" ourselves. I think that would be a fun bulletin board display outside our room.

Don't forget to take your Survival reports home to work on this weekend. The reports are due on Tuesday, October 16th!

Today we will continue to work on our Survival reports. You should be at the point where your research is complete and you are working on your assignment.

Today I will be assigning a new science homework assignment. The assignment will be to research a fish and draw a diagram labeling it. The assignment requirements are in your Diversity of Life booklet.

Remember, we are traveling to the Science Centre on Friday for the entire day. You need to pack a lunch, dress for being outside and be prepared to learn while having fun.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure that you are all still in bed as I write this. I hope that you enjoy the long weekend and eat lots of great food with your families. Teachers have a working day today. I'm attending a workshop this morning about our new grade seven math program. I know that the grade sevens are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to work with the new text books.

Thanks for the wonderful effort on your Arthropod posters. They are very impressive and show that you researched for information about your insect.

Next big research item is your Survival assignment. Next week you'll need to start gathering your research and begin writing your narrative. Remember to ask when you have questions or difficulties. If you need help I'm available but we also have Mrs. Thomas in the library, Ms McGregor and Mrs. Weisbrodt.

I hope that everyone is working hard to finish their Arthropod poster for tomorrow. Congratulations to everyone who has already finished and handed theirs in.

I'll be sending home a note about our Science Centre visit next Friday, October 12th. We're doing a Microscope workshop in the morning and watching a IMAX movie in the afternoon.

How is the research going for your Survival assignment? You'll have time to research this afternoon during Social Studies.

Hi,

Today is the annual Terry Fox School Run. Our run begins at 11am in the gym with our guest, Rob Close.
We will run through our neighbourhood: up Fourth Avenue to Wallace Street, down Sixth Avenue to Elliot Street and back to the school for a snack.
Thank you to everyone who worked hard to raise funds to support cancer research.

This is the last day of the AFL writing assessments. I know this has been hard for some people to do. Writing under pressure can be difficult but remember I only want you to do your best.

Have you been thinking about your Survival Assignment? I was so impressed by your work yesterday afternoon as you researched your countries. Keep it up.

Today I will also be handing out the arthropod poster assignment. Remember that this is a homework assignment. If you do not have internet access at home please see me to borrow books.

Have a great Friday,

Remember it's the Terry Fox tomorrow. Family is invited to walk or run our route through the neighbourhood. We will meet in the gym at 11am. Rob Close, area manager of The Running Room, will be our guest runner to lead us tomorrow.

Hi everyone,

Here we are back for another busy day at school. There is a cross country meet after school for our running team. The team has been working hard to prepare for the meet. Last week there were 1186 runners competing in the various categories. Good luck to the team.

I'm introducing a social studies project this week. The project is a survival activity where each one of you will be lost somewhere in the world. You will need to learn all about your country/island to survive. The project is broken down into three parts. I hope you enjoy this and put your mapping/research skills to good use.

The weather is set for New York city when I want it to be Regina. You can edit it to show Regina but I haven't figured out how to keep it that way. I guess I'll have to play around today.

Yesterday after school I was learning how to use our new school web site. I made a class page and linked our blog page to it. I'll have to spend some time this week working with it.

Monday at Haultain

Hi everyone,

Welcome to a rainy and cool Monday morning. I know it's not exactly motivating to get up and going to school when it's dreary like this. I don't like when it rains in the fall because it makes all of the leaves soggy. I like to walk down the sidewalk and crunch through the piles of leaves in my neighbourhood.

We're continuing on the AFL writing this week. We'll be working on pre-writing for narratives today. I think we're all learning by working through the writing process in the assessments.

I'm meeting with Stu Harris from our school board today to learn how to work with our new school web site. I'm hoping that I can set up our school web page then link our class blog to it.

Today I would also like to get the students who have begun their own research projects on the expert wiki. The wiki will be a place to store your research notes, links and pictures.

Don't forget to read the blogs from our site and from our Korean and Australian friends. Please comment to their blogs. If you want to read the newspaper click on The LeaderPost link. You may also choose to add to the collaborative story wiki or check the math wiki for a math problem. Let me know if you need the password.

I think that's all for today. Have a great one!

Hi Everyone,

I posted pictures from our site survey into a slide show yesterday. I had been having trouble using Safari as my browser to upload pictures so I decided to use Firefox. It worked so...ta da...we have a new slide show on the blog.

Good work on using the taxonomy information in our science books to identify the tree samples. I think it made everyone look at the leaves and needles closer to recognize differences.

The cross-country team had an awesome first meet of the season. I was working at the finish line and saw the runners come in. I was so impressed by the hard work and effort you put into your races. Congratulations. Brett took some great pictures so I'll post those into a slide show and add them to the monthly IMovie.

Thanks for bringing in all of the tree samples. The samples will be really useful to learn tree identification.

My husband thought I should mention the weather changes we've been having in Regina. It's typical fall weather here. Last week the overnight lows went to -5C well on Sunday it was back up to +31C. We do have some shifts in weather. This week has been highs of +17C during the day and lows at night of +2C.

How's everyone doing with their Terry Fox fund raising? I had a few students ask for additional pledge sheets yesterday. Very impressive effort everyone.

Today is the first cross country running meet of the new school year. The school team is excited to head to Douglas Park after school to compete along with around 1000 other runners. It's chaotic but exciting.

Hi everyone,

Today we need to download the pictures we took yesterday to computers. I'm suggesting that each group choose a computer and load their pictures into it for future reference. I'm interested in seeing what the picture takers thought would be images of value for the mapping of the school yard. When we were outside yesterday I had students tell me they were finished sketching the playground but couldn't tell me how many trees were in front of the school. Remember to do a complete site survey!

Did everyone remember to find tree samples for their homework? You need to bring in leaves, needles, seeds or twigs to use to identify what type of tree they are from.

We need to get blogging today. We've had a few busy mornings where we haven't had time to get to the computers. Also, with the new band schedule I may need to make some changes in the blogging schedule.

I think that's all for today. Have a great one!

We'll be working on them this week and the beginning of next week.

We have the kick-off to the annual Terry Fox run this morning with pledge sheets going home in the afternoon.

I'm picking up digital cameras from the school board office this morning. We'll use the cameras to complete a site survey of the playground before we begin to draw our maps.

Hi everyone,

I was looking for a video about Terry Fox to use for Monday's short assembly. The assembly is to kick off the annual Terry Fox school run day on September 28th. On Monday we will be sending home pledge sheets with each student to raise funds to help cancer research.
I decided to post the video because in Canada we all know who Terry Fox is but our blog readers around the world may not know about him.
Terry Fox is a national hero who lost a leg to cancer and decided to run across Canada to raise funds and awareness. Sadly, Terry died before his Marathon of Hope was completed. Tomorrow, September 16th, is the national Terry Fox run while the school run day is on the 28th.

Hi everyone,

Last night was the first frost. My poor flowers couldn't survive -5C overnight. I did say goodbye to them and thank them for a wonderful summer of blooms. I know that's a little flaky but I was sad to see them go. We had all of our house plants outside so we had to bring them in last night. My house looks a bit like a jungle now.

Remember to look at Ms Casey's class blog in Korea. If you check the links on her blog you'll see our class listed. How cool is that? I think I have a project for mac_10 today regarding the world map in the room. I also added a classroom in Australia for you to look at.

I've added a list of dates on the homework and school information link. I've added a trip to the Science Centre for October 12th and a trip to the MacKenzie Art Gallery on November 21st.

Welcome to our first full week of school. We've been warming up to this so I think we can do the five days. As always we've got lots to do this week. Today we're going to examine the characters in our novel "The Bad Beginning". You'll each choose a character to write a journal article for and during your blogging time you'll write it on a blog.

We'll be focusing on math problem solving today. Learning to solve math problems helps you think through any problem in your life and creatively look for solutions.

I think that's all for today. Have a great one at school and work.

Friday...Yippee!

Article posted September 7, 2007 at 02:33 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 374

Hi everyone,

I'm sitting at home collecting my thoughts for the school day. I like to reflect on what is going well in the classroom and what we need to improve. I know everyone is working really hard to learn our classroom routines and expectations. We have the ability and opportunity to learn so much this year!

Read crazy1's blog about our new novel "The Bad Beginning" to find our what that book's about. Keep watching for blogs about the characters in our book and journal entries from the characters point of view.

Have a great Friday,
Ms B

Thursday at Haultain

Hi everyone,

It's going to be another busy day especially with the addition of a new student. We're now at 29 and counting.

It was nice to meet all of the new parents, at least new to me, that came to visit the classroom. I'm glad that you were as excited about blogging as I am. Throughout the year we will be blogging about things in our lives, books we're reading and activities in the classroom. Keep reading to know what's happening with our grade 6 & 7 class.

We're working on our classroom routines, developing good work habits, and becoming a bit more organized. Along with the routines of school we will be exploring the world around us through our language arts, math, science, art and social studies activities. I look forward to involving families in our adventures throughout the year.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Back to School Barbeque

Hi everyone,

Tonight is our back to school barbeque. M&M Meats will be making us supper. Please plan on visiting the classroom between 5:00 and 5:30pm.

I've been working on the expert wikis by organizing the categories on the main expert page. We'll have to test if you can access them on all of the Macs or if you each need a password.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Welcome to a New School Week!

Article posted September 4, 2007 at 01:55 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 386

Hi everyone,

Today's the start of our second week of school. Okay, so there is only four days but we're warming up to a full week next week.

I've been playing with our class wikis and inviting other classes to take part in a collaborative writing wiki. I wonder who will participate with us.
I'm going to add a cluster map to the wiki to track our visitors. Speaking of cluster maps take a look at our blog's map because it's been updated. I've added the links to our wikis on this blog page. Have a look and see what we're doing.

We're up to 28 students. I know that we're a little squished in our classroom but I think it's also exciting that we have all of these people to brainstorm, plan and collaborate with within our classroom walls.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Hi everyone,

Wow...it's already Friday. I know...we started school on a Wednesday so it's a short week. Today we'll have our weekly Friday math quiz. I hope that everyone is ready.

I'm so excited to be your teacher this year. I know that we will have a great year investigating the world. What do you want to know about? What do you wonder about? This weekend I want you to make a list of topics that you want to become an expert about. Next week I'll form our Haultain Expert groups to begin our investigations.

take care

Last Sunday of Summer Vacation

Article posted August 26, 2007 at 05:04 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 381

Hi everyone,

I've just returned home from a morning run. It's cloudy and cool out. It certainly doesn't feel like a summer day. I'm seriously thinking about school today because I'm back there tomorrow. The teachers have staff meetings in the morning followed by a presentation in the afternoon. Tuesday we get ready for students. My daughter is going to come into our room to put up some new bulletin boards. I love that she helps me out. Remember the castle walls that she made outside our classroom last year.

How's everyone doing with the assignment? Have you got a picture ready for Wednesday?

Next assignment: Think about summer camp or our school camp in June. If you could plan any type of theme camp what would it be? Put your thinking cap on so you're ready to create your fantasy camp brochure on Wednesday.

See you soon,
Ms B

It's Almost Time to go Back to School!

Article posted August 23, 2007 at 02:49 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 369

Hi everyone,

I can't believe that it's almost time to head back to school. I start on Monday, I need to get everything ready, while all of the students are back on Wednesday. I've had a few new blogs from people looking forward to going back to school so they can see their friends.

We're getting new MAC laptops on a cart along with a digital video camera and a digital still camera. I'm starting to plan what kind of projects we'll be able to do with our new equipment. If you have any ideas please let me know. I can't wait to try everything out.

Here's your first back to school assignment:
Bring a picture of you that was taken during the summer holidays. If you don't have one yet this is your opportunity. Try to find a picture of you doing something (on a ride at the exhibition) or somewhere (like British Columbia) or with family.
If you're reading this let other people in our class know. Don't forget about the new people from Ms Lamont's room.

Keep reading for back to school news,
Ms B
p.s. share our blog address with people from Ms Lamont's room.

Home Again

Hello,

I'm back from Calgary. We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed our time away.

Oddly enough I'm starting to think about school starting. Two weeks from today I'll in school preparing for students who will arrive the next day.
I have so many ideas for the new school year that I'm excited to start. Don't get me wrong...I love my summer vacation and I'll probably be grateful for the first long weekend of the school year in October.

I've been communicating via email to Jay in India who was my professor for my technology in education class at the university. Jay was an amazing resource and was a visiting professor in Regina from Mombai, India. Jay teaches a Masters program in educational technology and designs interactive educational software.

Recently I've been begun to email Allanah in New Zealand to plan a collaboration between students.

Also, thanks to all of the educators who post questions and comments on blogmeister group mail. I've learned so much from you.

Have a great day,
Ms B

Calgary

Article posted August 7, 2007 at 05:37 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 403

Hi everyone,

I'm in Calgary with my mom and daughter to visit my sister. We drove here yesterday. My daughter, Alexandra, who is sixteen drove from Medicine Hat to my sister's house. This was her first big highway driving experience. Alexandra will fly
home on Wednesday night while my mom and I will stay until Sunday.

If you haven't been to Calgary it's a large, beautiful city. We love driving around and checking out the cool areas of the city. There are also lots of great small towns like Okotoks, High River, Bragg Creek and Cochrane to visit. We might drive to Banff one day to look around. The Rockie Mountains are beautiful.

What is everyone else doing on their summer break? I've heard from newnew and babygurl about their summer. Write a quick blog to share your summer stories.

take care,
ms b

Creativity and The Learning Process

Article posted July 17, 2007 at 03:47 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 399

Hi,

I've been fascinated by all of the people looking at the blog about creativity. I'm going to put a laminated copy of the list on my students' desks to begin the new shool year. The idea is that the students (yes, that's all of you who will be in my class next year) will start to think about the ways I can help them find and develop their creativity.

Something else to think about:

Creativity does not just play a role in the arts, invention, and innovation; it also is a part of our everyday lives (Runco & Richards, 1997).

Let me know what you think about all of this. Send me a comment to share your thoughts.

take care,
ms b

p.s. I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer vacation!

Creativity and The Learning Process

Article posted July 12, 2007 at 03:26 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 500

Hi everyone,

I'm back talking about my class because I'm really enjoying it. Today we were talking about what we've been learning from the class and what changes we may make in our teaching/life. I think the best part of the class is all of the discussion that happens between the other students. We were discussing an article by Robert J. Sternberg that is called: Encouraging Students to Decide for Creativity. The article is all about creating an atmosphere for students to be able to explore their creativity. One of the teachers in my class used the article to make this list.

Encourage My Creativity!

1. Let me define and redefine my own problems. How can I solve this myself?
2. How can I use the knowledge I have today to help me? What thoughtful questions can I ask?
3. Let me show you what I have done and explain how and why it is important and valuable. You do not need to share the same view as me, but please respect my creativity.
4. Let me share my brilliant and silly ideas and help me use my best ideas in whatever I am doing. ( I really connected with this one.)
5. I can teach you as much as you will teach me. Let's work together to be more creative.
6. Praise me for my efforts even though I may not be successful this time. Let's brainstorm ways others solve problems so I might learn a new way.
7. May I take a sensible risk and share something you might not agree with?
8. I am not sure. I think I might be close. Please give me more time to come up with my better idea.
9. Encourage me to succeed and believe in my own ability.
10. Help me find what I love to do!
11. Teach me that not everything I do needs recognition today.
12. BE MY ROLE-MODEL OF CREATIVITY.

Adapted from Robert J. Sternberg's article titled Encouraging Students to Decide for Creativity, 2002.

Thanks Melanie for all of your work putting this list together!

take care,
Ms B

Hi everyone,

We're officially in our second week of summer holidays. What is everyone doing?

I posted a blog from new-new yesterday and she already misses school! It was good to hear from you new-new.

This is also my second week of my university class. I'm really enjoying the course which is called: Creativity and The Learning Process. Be afraid everyone because all of these classes just keep inspiring me with new ideas for the classroom! My prof is very cool and has interesting ideas. I'm looking forward to another class with him in the fall.

I've also been spending time with my friends and family. I've been to some great barbeques, gone to the pool with my mom and this morning I'm going for tea with my friend.

take care for now,
Ms B

Hi everyone,

Wow, I can't believe that another school year is finished. Where did the time go? The last month passed in such a rush.

I'm starting a university class on Tuesday. I'll be going to class Monday to Thursday for four weeks. I'm really looking forward to going to school. Crazy but true!

What are everyone's plans? Feel free to blog over the summer to let me and your classmates know what you're doing. I'll leave the class list the same until school starts again in August.

Almost done!

Article posted June 26, 2007 at 05:54 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 348

Hi everyone,
I can't believe that it's almost the last day of school. I'll see everyone this afternoon. We have the cultural presentation about Greece, last clean-up of desks and some final assignments.

Tomorrow you need to be at school right at 9am so that I can do attendance and we'll leave on our trip. We'll be taking the city bus to the RCMP Heritage Centre and spending most of the day there.
Pack a lunch for tomorrow and we'll walk to a park by the centre.

Has anyone checked out the ClusterMap lately? We've gone international!!! There are two "dots" in the United States and one in the Middle East. How cool is that?

Have a great day,
Ms B

p.s. I'll keep blogging through the summer until the new school year. Blog or comment whenever you feel like it and I'll post it. Lil-mara made a comment to a blog from her early holidays in Calgary.

Back from Outdoor School

Article posted June 22, 2007 at 02:10 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 547

Hi everyone,

We're back from our Outdoor School. We were at Lumsden Beach Camp for three days and we had a great time. We went canoeing, tried archery, hiked (a lot!), swam at the beach, cooked hotdogs over a fire for lunch and had a dance.

We were having a tick contest to see who had the most ticks. The last I heard J in Mr.S's class had 37 ticks. Did anybody beat that! We also have to give J the award the most camp injuries!

I know that I was tired last night. I came home, showered and did a tick check. So far, so good.

I'll give everyone time to blog about camp today. What was your favourite activity at camp? What did you like the least? Best meal? You get the idea.

Have a great day!
Ms B

p.s. Only four days of school left including today. Remember that we're going to the RCMP Heritage Centre on Wednesday! We're taking a city bus there and back.

Podcasting

Article posted June 11, 2007 at 02:15 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 457

Hi everyone,

We'll continue working with GarageBand this week to create podcasts. It's a learning process that we'll all have an opportunity to go through. Remember to listen to 50cent and peter's stories.

When you're working with other students to create your podcast remember that you have a limited amount of time to work, you don't have time to fool around and your fellow students who are instructing you are learning too.

I'm looking forward to our cultural presentations this week. I hope that everyone is getting organized for their presentation day. I'm looking forward to the presentation about China today. I'm also looking forward to tasting Chinese food.

Have a great day!

Podcasting

Hi everyone,

Yesterday Ms. McMillan was in our classroom teaching some of us about creating a podcast with GarageBand. peter and jub-jub started. They created really cool mystery stories by adding music and sound effects to the stories they had each written. After recess peter and jub-jub became the teachers showing blogy and 50cent how to use GarageBand. Today we'll continue with new students working on their mystery stories.

The next step will be to post the podcast to the students' blogs. I know it's crazy but I'm already envisioning how we can use our new talents next year!

Have a great day!
