We Love Our Moms!

Article posted May 16, 2013 at 03:45 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 927

We had a party for our moms.
We decorated the room so the moms could have places to sit.
We made a cake for our mothers.
We made lemonade with lemons and sugar and water for them.
We served our moms cake and lemonade.
When we opened the door, it was exciting to see our moms at school.
We went out of the room to find our moms.
We sang for our moms.
We gave our moms presents.
We made pictures of our mom.
We wrote about our moms.
We gave petunias to our moms and they were different colors - red, dark pink, purple and light purple.
We made a thumbprint necklace for our moms.
It was good because we got to see our moms at school.
It felt good because we got to spend time with our moms.

Self Portraits

Article posted April 14, 2013 at 03:16 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 621

A self portrait is a picture of someone that is drawn by that person. We used mirrors to look at our faces closely. We noticed lines and shapes on our faces. We drew what we saw and when we finished, we had a self portrait.

We used our found objects and beautiful stuff to copy our self portrait. Now we had two portraits. One we drew and one we made from found objects.

We liked finding things that would go with our drawings to make our faces. We used things to make our pictures colorful, like yarn for our hair. It was fun to think of new ways to use our found objects and to think about making portraits in different ways.

Maple Syrup and Sugar on Snow

Article posted March 20, 2013 at 11:02 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 7839

Mrs. Knee and Mr. Knee make maple syrup at their house. Mrs. Knee told us about making maple syrup and we read books about it. We watched a video too. We learned:
You get sap from sugar maple trees.
First you drill a small hole in the tree and then you put a pile in the hole. Then you tap it in with a hammer. You have to hang a bucket on the spile and put a top on it. The sap drips into the bucket.
The sap comes when the days are warm and the nights are cold.
It takes lots of sap to make syrup. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
Mr. Knee boils the sap in a big pan n the sugar house. He boils for a long time until the sap turns to sugar.
There is a cupola on top of the sugar house. The steam goes out the cupola.

We made pancakes at school and had some of Mr. Knee's syrup on them. It was the best!
Mrs. Knee cooked syrup for a longer time until it was thicker. We went outside and up the hill to the field. We found clean snow. It was deep. Mrs. Knee poured the syrup on the snow and it turned sticky and icky. That is Sugar on Snow. Sebastian and Nolan liked it. It was sweet and good. It stuck to Emily's mitten and it stuck in Olivia's hair.

Have you ever had Sugar on Snow?

Read Across the World

Article posted March 7, 2013 at 04:13 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 1781

We celebrated Read Across America and World Reading Day by inviting several people around the world to read to us. Each day, we used Skype to connect with a new reader. We listened to new stories and made new friends. We even heard a story that we knew. Our friend, Mrs. Marrinan stayed up late to read to us. It was good to meet Mrs. Cassidy. We read her blog and have wondered what she looks like. Ms. von Wahlde surprised us by sending us the book she read. We enjoyed our new stories so much that Mrs. Knee bought most of the books for our class. Now we can read the books whenever we want and have good memories of our skype calls.

When Mrs. Marrinan came to visit in December, she brought us several books from Australia. We became interested in Australian animals and have been learning about them through books, websites and even with the help of Mrs. M and the Gems. We have a wiki that we used for our online information - check it out here. We shared our learning with our families on curriculum night. We want to share our learning with you, too.

A Building Project

Article posted February 10, 2013 at 11:14 PM GMT-5 • comment (4) • Reads 2072

We have had a wonderful winter of snow play. We've hiked in the woods, rolled snowballs to make snowmen and even had lots of snow for sliding. After our recent blizzard and some warmer temperatures, we had the perfect snow for building. Can you guess what we made? Here are some pictures to give you a hint....

What Are We Making?

Do you need more hints? We worked very hard packing the snow in the recycle bins and carrying them over to the building spot where Big Jack and Omar were waiting.

What Is It?

Did you guess? If you still don't know, we think this video will help you. Please tell us what you think.

100th Day!

Article posted February 6, 2013 at 09:49 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 1623

Wednesday was our 100th day of school. We've been preparing for the 100th day of school by practicing our oral counting skills. Many children can count to 100 and the rest of the class continues to practice. We also have been making groups of ten and counting by 10's to 100. Last week, we worked on a bulletin board display that combined the 100th day event with Valentine's Day. After folding paper and cutting out more than 400 hearts, we used them to make 100 Valentine "Cards". Each child wrote 5 numbers in sequence until we reached 100. There have been several compliments about our display and many people stop to look a bit closer. Each square is a work of art. We are very pleased with the results.

Ice Science

Article posted February 1, 2013 at 03:26 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 1869

Last week was a very cold week. It was 0* F and we couldn't go outside for recess. But that was okay because we did some cold weather science work.
What we know:

We know that things freeze in a freezer
You can make ice in a freezer.
Lakes freeze when it is cold.

What we wonder:

Can we make ice outside?
What can we put the water in?

We found containers to put water in. We even used a Bilibo. Mrs. Knee had some balloons. We know about water balloons and we wondered if the water would freeze inside the balloon. We filled two balloons. We put yellow color in one balloon and left one plain. We wondered what would happen if we colored the water. We put things in the water and wondered what would happen. We put in glitter, spider rings, foam shapes, paper clips, and even peppermint candy. The candy turned the water pink and green.
Getting started
Then we put all the containers outside. It was very cold outside. The water in the trays began to freeze and we saw crystals on top of the water.
OUTSIDE
We went to music and when we came back we checked outside. We had ice!
Ice
Ice Balloons
The balloons were hard but we could hear water inside when Mrs. Knee shook them. We wanted to see inside the balloon. Mrs. Knee cut off the balloon. We noticed:

The glitter was stuck into the ice
The spider rings were stuck.
The colored water froze and so did the clear.
Everything was hard and cold and shaped like the containers.
A ball of ice shaped like a balloon
A hole in the top of the ice
Water was inside the ice ball.
One was yellow and the other was clear
The ice was thin.
The water came out of the hole and now the ice looked like a bowl.

We wanted to make more ice balloons and let all the water freeze. Mrs. Knee filled more balloons and we put different colors in the water.
Photo Jan 24, 10 26 01 AM
We left the balloons outside all day and all night so they could get hard. The next day we brought them inside and Mrs. Knee cut open the balloons. Some ice balloons were cracked in half. some had big cracks.
More Ice Balloons
The ice balloons were melting inside. We know that salt makes ice melt on the road. We wondered what salt would do to our ice balloons. We hoped they would not melt away.
Investigations
We noticed:

The salt made lines on the ice.
We saw spikey line things inside the ice.
The ice looked pretty.
The towel on the table was getting wet from the ice. The ice was melting.
Our hands got wet.

We wonder what the spikey line things are in the ice. We wonder why the ice balloons had cracks. What do you think?

This is what we did with our ice balloons.

An Afternoon of Fun

Article posted January 26, 2013 at 10:16 AM GMT-5 • comment (10) • Reads 2042

We are very lucky to have lots of outdoor places to play at our school. We are also lucky that we can take the time to play and enjoy the outdoors. It was a beautiful day to be outside and the snow was just right for making things. Jack Hutchinson, our wonderful Thursday afternoon volunteer joined us as we worked together to create some amazing things in the snow. As you watch our movie, look for the ways we are working together and helping friends. We learn how to cooperate and how to be friends when we take time to build and create. Look for our smiles too. We were having fun!

Our big buddies met with Mrs. Campelia, our physical education teacher to learn about activities that would be good to do with 5 and 6 year olds. They planned wonderful activities to do with us. Some of the big buddies showed us things that they can do with the materials. It was like a show. It was a fun afternoon. We especially like the parachute. We are wondering what we will do next time when we get together with our big buddies.

Gingerbread Houses

Article posted January 1, 2013 at 11:46 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 1503

Our gingerbread houses are a direct follow up to the reading of several versions of the runaway food. We read about the Gingerbread Girl, the Gingerbread Boy, the Gingerbread Baby and even a variation that involved a Runaway Pancake. Mrs. Marrinan brought us a story from Australia called the the Lamington Man. We noticed the setting - country, city ( yes - New York City), farm, and forest. We discussed the ways the runaway character was tricked and eventually caught - except for the Gingerbread Girl, who is one smart cookie.

In the Jan Brett version of the Gingerbread Baby, Matti used a gingerbread house to capture the baby. The children drew plans for decorating the roofs and walls of their houses and followed their plans with various patterns of candy. The pattern work was connected to our math activities. Lots of thoughtful work and effort went into creating each house.

We love to play outdoors and our favorite place to play is in the woods. We have fun playing together and everyone get along. We build things, look for salamanders, play imaginary games, and have fun. Sometimes Mrs. Laskowsky's class joins us and there is plenty of room for everyone in the woods. The video shows what we did together a few days ago.

Classroom Rules

Article posted September 30, 2012 at 10:57 PM GMT-5 • comment (4) • Reads 1233

The KinderKids shared their hopes and dreams for kindergarten at the beginning of the year. There are many things they hope to do and learn: play with friends, go on trips, learn about water creatures, learn about math, paint pictures, use an iPad, learn to spell, make new friends and go to the ocean. Look at each person's hopes on their own blog. The KinderKids needed to figure out how to work and play together so that everyone gets to do all the things they hope to do this year.

Mrs. Knee asked this question - What kind of rules do we need so we can all do lots of things. The KinderKids had many ideas and Mrs. Knee made a long list of what everyone said. There were too many rules to remember. Someone noticed that some of the rules were about taking care of friends. Some rules were about taking care of the school and our room and the earth. There were even rules about taking care of ourselves. Now the KinderKids have only 3 rules - Take care of yourself, Take care of friends, Take care of the classroom, the school and the Earth. Three rules are easy to remember. The KinderKids also know what kinds of things they need to do to follow the rules.  We made a movie to show everyone about our rules.

We read "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynold's and then we wanted to make lots of dots. We tried many different ways to make them. We used paint, and markers, and colored pencils. We made Dot Pins with Sculpey to wear on Dot Day. We used coffee filters, markers and water to make some interesting dots. Even our Deerfield Fair Projects was a dot! We rolled colorful scrap paper and glued the rolls on our own silver circles. Then we glued the silver circles on a giant dot. Mrs. Laskowsky's class made some too. We are going to put this in the fair so everyone can see it. Maybe they will want to go and make their mark too.

Things have been very busy in the KinderKids classroom and Mrs. Knee has been busy too. That is why there have not been any new blog posts in a while. We worked hard on our bird projects and you will be able to see some of our work on our blogs. We are still interested in learning about birds so we are watching the Decorah Bald Eagles web cam. We are waiting for the first egg to hatch.

We celebrated Valentine's Day with a lunch in our classroom that our parents made for us. We even had a chocolate fountain. Yum! Then we opened our cards from our friends. It was a great day.

Valentine's Day

Our school had a Jump Rope for Heart activity. We did this with our 8th grade big buddies. We jumped for 45 minutes.

We learned about making maple syrup and went on a field trip to Mrs. Knee's house to see the maple trees, the buckets and spigots and the sugar house with the cupola.

When we went for a walk in the woods around the school, we collected many colorful things. We sorted them by color and then glued them on paper that matched the colors. We had to look carefully to find the different colors.

We had some milkweed fluff and it reminded someone of feathers. Mrs. Knee thought we could use the leaves and sticks and pine cones to make a turkey. We used crushed leaves for the body. Big leaves and pine cones were for the big feathers. We used lots of milkweed fluff too. We had to add that outside because it was floating everywhere. Max had the idea for the eye. We are reading lots of books about monsters. Two of our favorites are If You're a Monster and You Know It and There was an Old Monster. These books inspired us to make our own colorful monsters. We drew and cut shapes for the head, body, arms and legs and glued them together. Then we added faces, horns, tails and other things to make our monsters look great.

After reading The Monster's Party by Joy Cowley, we decided to tell about things that our monsters can do. We tried to think of different things the monsters could do. We hope you like our monsters and like our ideas for what they can do.

My creation
We have added one more routine to our Daily 5 work. It is called Listen to Reading. We have lots of stories on iPods and on the computer to choose from. We use Tumble Books on the computer. We can hear the words and follow along when we watch the screen. With the stories on the iPods, we listen to the words and turn the pages of our books when we hear the signal. Listening to Reading is something else that helps us become better readers. Listen to Reading 2

Our Butterflies

Article posted October 6, 2011 at 09:53 AM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 2739

We are learning to write stories about what we know and things we do. We wrote this message together during our writing time. It is about the monarch butterflies we have in our room.

We had some monarch caterpillars. The butterflies lay eggs on leaves and they hatch into caterpillars. They eat leaves. They eat milkweed.

IMG_1973      IMG_0977       IMG_2010       The caterpillars go into a chrysalis. First they turn into a J.The chrysalis is green and then it turns black. When it is black that means it's almost ready to hatch the butterfly. When the butterflies come out, they hang upside down to pump up their wings. When they hatch their wings are all crumpled up and they have a fat body. If the butterfly is a boy, it has a black dot on each wing. The girls don't have any black dots.

 IMG_1124IMG_1126IMG_1128IMG_1129

IMG_1551       IMG_1133      IMG_1147      We let the butterflies go. A butterfly flew on to Shaun's pants and then flew to Max's shirt. Some of the kids got to hold the butterfly. The butterflies are going to fly to Mexico. The butterflies have to go there because it is too cold here in Deerfield. They rest in trees. You can watch them in the sky. The butterflies will come back. When they come back we might find them again. We put tags on the butterflies to help the scientists know where they came from.

Some of the KinderKids like to do Me Moves on top of our Bilibo chairs and keep their balance. Me Moves helps us relax and get ready for our work. We do math after Me Moves.

We even teach our families how to do MeMoves. Family MeMoves

Learning Together, Learning from Friends

Article posted March 15, 2011 at 11:15 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 13138

Our interest in Australia originated through our blogging work and connections with the 2M Gems in Brisbane. After skyping with them and learning how they celebrate Christmas in their summertime, we became interested in other Australian things, especially the animals that live in Australia. Mrs. Knee filled the classroom library with many fiction and non-fiction books about animals from Australia. Some of the books were sent to us from Australia by Mrs. Marrinan. We chose an animal we were interested in learning about and thought of questions we had about each animal animal. Our work begins…

Our Animals in Oz wiki is the tool we used to keep information about each of the animals. Each page has a link to sites with words, pictures and video that would help us learn. We used the wiki in class to help us learn about the animals. Many people contributed to our wiki. Children worked at home and added information. Mrs. Marrinan and the 2M Gems posted first hand information from their experiences from living in Australia. Another Australian teacher heard about our project and gladly offered some pictures. Mrs. Knee's daughter, Dr. Fusaro has worked in Australia for scientific research, added her pictures and writing.

We also used skype to connect with Dr. Fusaro and Mrs. Marrinan. They answered questions and shared information about our animals. When we finished our research and our projects, we displayed them at our school's Curriculum Night. Our parents came to see our work and we skyped with the 2MGems to share what we had learned. These videos are shorter versions of our skype conversations. We wanted you to know how we learn. In another post, we will share our projects.

from Mrs. Knee...
Through this work, the children learned to investigate and share information. They found that they could learn from each other and from people around world. They learned research skills and how to represent their understandings in multiple ways. These are life long skills. While the Curriculum Night display was our culminating event for our Australian Animal study, we are by no means finished with the learning. My wish is that children continue to be life long learners, connect and learn from others and take risks to try new things. Our work continues…

Christmas in Australia

Our friends, the 2M Gems and Mrs. Marrinan skyped with us and told us about how they celebrate Christmas. It is summertime in Australia and many families take a vacation to the ocean for Christmas. We thought it would be fun to learn more about Christmas in the summertime. We compared their customs to ours and learned some interesting things.

Did you know that instead of stockings for Santa, many Australian children hang Santa sacks at the end of their beds? Since it's hot, families might have a barbeque (a barbie) for their special Christmas meal. We learned a song about kangaroos pulling Santa's sleigh called Six White Boomers and read The Aussie Night Before Christmas.

You can see some of the things we did for our celebration in this Animoto video.

In Australia, they have a vehicle called a ute. It is something like a pick up truck. Ute is a short word for utility vehicle. We painted a ute for our classroom that was big enough to sit in. We learned about the ute from the Aussie Jingle Bells song. We put presents in the back of our ute because we think that Santa might use a ute to deliver his presents in Australia.

You can see the words to the Aussie Jingle Bells here and can listen to the first verse.

Writing Celebration

We have been writing stories since the beginning of the year. Our stories tell about the things we do, or places we've been or about our family. We think about the story and tell the story in our head. We draw the picture to show the story and then we write the words. We write letters to go with the sounds we hear in our words. We do our best and then keep on going.

We selected one story from our drawing and writing books to "fancy up" and get ready to our Writing Celebration. At the Writing Celebration, we shared one thing we liked about our work with the whole class. Then we met in small groups and read our stories to each other. Later, we had a special snack together.

Blue Job Hike

We went on a hike. We went up Blue Job. We went on the school bus. Some moms and dads came too. It was very long. The mountain is in Strafford NH. We saw the fire tower at the top. We found lots of different colored leaves. We found leaves and rocks and sticks. Everything was so colorful.

When we got to the top, we took a little break and then we went to a different part and then we ate lunch. The teachers brought the snack. We needed to eat out of a paper or plastic bag.  We wore coats and jackets because it was freezing up on the rocky bald hill. It has no trees on top. Mrs Knee brought plastic bags in case it was rainy and we could wear them. It was a little rainy. We had to hike back to the school bus to finish our lunch. After we went to the mountain, we went back to school. We went uphill on 2 mountains because Mrs. Knee said we were good hikers. We were so good at hiking. It was very fun and we loved it. We want to do it again. It was awesome. The teachers were so proud of us. The teachers were awesome too.

Celebrating International Peace Day

We decided to make mini pinwheels. We learned how to "paint" with Crayola markers and water in art and used that technique for the paper we used for the pinwheels. We worked with Mrs. Laskowsky's class to make a picture of the world. We put our project in the Deerfield Fair so people could see it. We won a Blue Ribbon for our work.

Our Earth Day Project

Article posted April 21, 2010 at 10:16 PM GMT-5 • comment (2) • Reads 937

We are helping to educate people about taking care of the earth for Earth Day. Mrs. Knee went to the Lovin' Spoonful Restaurant to borrow some bags that they use for their customers. She brought them back to school for us and the other kindergarten classes. Two second grade classes joined in our project. We decorated the bags with messages about taking care of the earth. On Earth Day, when the Lovin Spoonful customers pick up their food, they will take it home in beautiful bags and learn something about how to help the earth.

Mrs. Knee got the idea for this from the
Earth Day Groceries Project. It is a project that promotes environmental awareness in a school and its community. Students decorate grocery bags and then return them to a grocery store. It is a free activity that thousands of schools around the world will be involved in on Earth Day, April 22, 2010.

It was also created to enable children to develop an appreciation of different languages, accents and dialects from around the world. Each month, everyone will have the same task to complete in their own language. At the end of each month, we can go to the Voices of the World site to listen to each class present the message.  Visit the map  to hear and see where everyone in this project is from.

Enjoying the Snow

Article posted January 12, 2010 at 08:33 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 2723

We love being outdoors and we are lucky to have lots of places to go. We have flat places to make snow angels. We have a big hill to climb. It is good for sliding. We make forts and houses in the piles made by the snow plow. We can also go to the rocks by our classroom and play on the snow piles. What do you do for recess at your school?

Making a Staircase for Math

In math, when we compare, we use words like greater than, less than, equal, least, most and the same. We used different materials to show how to go from least to most or from most to least. When we do this, we make something that looks like stairs.

Rock Our World

Article posted December 12, 2009 at 01:00 AM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 815

Several Kinderkids and their families came back to school on Saturday for the Rock Our World Family Night. We were able to video chat with other students in the project and watch the video of all students dancing and singing the Rock Our World song. Amanda's mom made some special cookies to help us celebrate being a part of Rock Our World.

Rock Our World is an International project that connects K-12 students on every continent.Together they collaborate to compose music, make movies, meet each other in live video chats. The theme of Rock Our World 11 is Tolerance. We discussed ways to show tolerance for others many times during class. We know that it doesn't matter what someone looks like, how they dress or how they talk. It is still important to be a friend and be kind. It is important to be tolerant and to get along with everyone. The Rock Our World song is about this. Everyone in the project helped sing the song together. You can find the song in iTunes - Just click here.

We liked using Garage Band to add tracks to songs that came from other schools. We also liked doing video chats and singing the Rock Our World song. Rock Our World Cookies

Our classmate Jacob had a house fire last week and he can't live in his house anymore. He needs all new things because of the fire. We read the book A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams about a house fire. Friends helped the family by bringing them new things. The family saved money in a jar for a long time so they could by a special chair for the mother. Jacob said the story is like the fire at their house. Lots of people helped his family. Jacob said that he doesn't have any of his books because of the fire. We decided to collect money in a jar just like the story. When it is full, we will buy new books for Jacob. Lots of people are helping us collect the money. The jar is getting full and we wonder if we will get so much money that it will overflow. Soon we will buy some books for our friend. The jar

Our Deerfield Fair Project

Article posted October 12, 2009 at 07:20 AM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 3552

The Kindergarten classes worked together on a project for the Deerfield Fair. We read The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons and connected our project connected to the book. Mrs. Knee taught us how to do needle felting, using a very sharp needle and wool. Needle felting is fun. Our class made the spring and winter tree. We also made the little bird that held the sign.

When the project was finished, it was displayed in the School Building at the Fair. The judges gave us a blue ribbon for our work. Yippee!

Everyone in the class hopes to learn many things this year. In order for everyone to be able to learn and work together, we need some rules. We've been talking about the rules we need so that everyone gets to do what they are hoping to do. We had three pages of rules but that was too many to remember. We noticed that some rules were connected and in the end, we have only four rules.

We played the sleeping game on the bus ride back. We pretended to be sleeping all the way back to school. Next week we will make applesauce and apple crisp.

The KinderKids invited their mothers to the classroom for a Mother's Day Celebration. They made fresh squeezed lemonade and served it to their moms. As part of their Rock Our World-What's Cookin' project, the KinderKids made a cooking video to teach others how to make fresh squeezed lemonade.

Before making the video, the KinderKids discussed the steps needed to make the lemonade. Once the steps were in sequence, they made another batch. Some children filmed while others followed the directions. The lemonade was yummy and we hope you try to make some. We needed to make a double batch to have enough for the whole class.

We have some new tech tools in our classroom. They are the Small Wonder video cameras. We are learning to use our 4 new cameras to show what we do in the classroom, to tell stories about our work and to share what we learn.

All of the video was filmed by us. We know that we cannot use names when we film our friends. We also know that we should record the work we do. We are not making silly videos about ourselves and friends. We will not share anything that would embarrass someone or make them feel bad. Our friends in Mrs. Cassidy's class use lots of videos. We have learned about ways to use video from them.

We had a Curriculum Night and came back to school at 6:00pm. The Gems were just starting their day at school. We set up a video chat so we could finally meet our Australian friends. They had several questions for us and we had a few for them. It does not snow in Brisbane and we talked about playing in the snow. The Gems wear uniforms at their school. They all had blue shirts. We think it is fun meeting students from other places. We were glad that we could meet the Gems.

The Robots Are Here

This week we received the first of several "digital tools" for our classroom because we are part of the 2008-2009 Digital Tools Grant from the NH Department of Education's Office of Educational Technology. The grant is funded through the NCLB Title IID Program and we are one of four classroom at our school to receive the funding. The KinderKids are excited because they will have new things to help them learn and they are very excited about the Roamer robots. After observing the demo program, the KinderKids wanted to teach the robot something. We all went to the hallway to figure out how to program the robot to go to the end of the hallway. The KinderKids are learning about measurement, estimation, geometry, problem solving and collaboration while using Roamer. They learned that there is some work to making a robot move and go where they want it to be.

What do you think about this work?
Do you think the KinderKids are involved to their work?
Are they enjoying themselves?

Fun In the Snow

We have lots of snow this winter. We love to play outside. We are lucky because we have two places to play. We can play near our classroom. The snowplow makes big piles near the rocks and we love to climb on them. We like to make houses there. Sometimes we go to the big hill to slide. The snow is deep so we have a hard time walking. We also make snow angels and climb on the snow piles. It is always fun to play in the snow.

Jeff will work with scientists in a program called PolarTREC. Jeff will fly the flags from everyone on the ship and take pictures for us to see. We will check on Jeff during his trip by reading his on line journal and looking at the pictures he takes. He will begin his trip on November 25. We are reading the journal of another PolarTREC teacher. She is Robin Ellwood and she is a teacher in Rye NH. Thank you to family and friends for visiting our blog these past few weeks. We enjoy reading the comments and took time on Friday to answer some of the questions.

There were many comments about our voki for Voices of the World. We picked a horse for our voki because most people voted for it. At first we chose different animals but the horse got the most votes. We have lots of horses in Deerfield because our town is in the country. Some Kinderkids have horses at their house. Some Kinderkids ride horses.

We do not have any snow. We have frost and ice in the morning but we don’t have snow yet. This time of year, we have to wear a jacket to school in the morning but when we go home in the afternoon, we don't wear the jacket.

When we hike in the woods now we wear our orange vests for safety. This is the time for hunting. It is hunting season.

Keep asking questions and thanks for visiting our blog.

Stacking Oreo® Cookies

Article posted October 14, 2008 at 01:00 AM GMT-5 • comment (7) • Reads 1569

The Kinderkids participated in a classroom project along with other classes around the world. In each classroom, each student stacked oreo® cookies as high as he or she could. An average of each student's highest result became the class result. In our class, the highest stack was 22 oreo® cookies and the lowest stack was 10. Our average was 16. 717 schools were in the project and 14,752 children were the stackers. There were students from 44 US states, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and the Virgin Islands. The average stack of all the results was 18.

Besides having lots of fun, we did lots of counting, comparing and creating. The stacking was part of math workshop and we think we did lots of math. We asked questions about how many, how high, and how few. After the "official" stacking, we made staircases, patterns and designs with the cookies. We have been busy with many apple activities since our apple picking trip. We used our apples to make apple sauce and apple crisp.

We read many books connected with apples. One favorite book is Ten Apples Up On Top by Theo LeSieg (Dr. Seuss). Mrs. Knee and Miss Godfrey helped get our apples up on top!

Apple Picking

We had a perfect day for our visit to the orchard. There were plenty of apples for everyone and we left plenty on the trees. We enjoyed the hayride through the orchard and filled our bags before heading back to the house. On the way back, one of our classmates discovered she lost her tooth while eating an apple. We helped press some apples for cider and then enjoyed a small bowl of ice cream before going back to school. Next week, we will do some cooking and other apple projects.

Thank you to all the parents who assisted on this trip.

All of our monarch butterflies emerged from their chrysalis. We released the last butterfly this week. We watched tiny caterpillars grow to large caterpillars and change to chrysalis. We observed the changes to the chrysalis as they went from green to black. We let our butterflies go so they could fly to Mexico. Gotta go, gotta go. Gotta go to Mexico!

Odiorne State Park

Article posted June 12, 2008 at 01:00 AM GMT-5 • comment (6) • Reads 9886

We are studying different water enviroments. We learned about ponds, rivers and the estuary. We visited Odiorne State Park to learn more about the rocky shore. We researched many things about the rocky shore before the trip so we would know what to look for when we arrived.

We started at the white zone and moved down toward the black zone. Soon we found the tide pools because the low was out. We found lots of life in the tide pools. As the tide came in, so did we.

After a picnic lunch, we went inside the Science Center for more exploration. At the touch tank, we held sea stars. This was good because we couldn't find them out in the tide pools. We think it was too warm where we looked. We also saw other exhibits in the Center before going home.

Thanks to all our parents who helped with this trip. You're the BEST!

As part of our water study, we visited the Great Bay. The Great Bay is connected to the ocean and Deerfield is connected to the Great Bay. The Lamprey River begins in Deerfield and is one of the 5 rivers that flow into the bay. The bay is an important place. Many young animals begin in the estuary.

We were especially interested in seeing the horseshoe crabs. This is the time of year that they lay their eggs in the sand.

Learning about Dog Sledding

Article posted March 19, 2008 at 01:00 AM GMT-5 • comment (2) • Reads 1008

Grandpa Bob and Nana came to teach us about sled dog racing. they brought two of their nine dogs. We tried out the 6 dog line. The lead dogs run in front of others. They must be smart and fast. The swing dogs run directly behind the leaders. Their job is to help "swing" the team in the turns or curves. The wheel dogs are directly in front of the sled. Their job is to pull the sled out and around corners or trees.
Our new friends in Mrs. Shield's kindergarten live in Georgia. We did a videocast with them so they could learn about sled dog racing. They told us about a book they read called Balto. We decided to read it too.

After reading Balto, we became interested in the Iditarod. We followed the race by visiting the web site. We learned that Lance Mackey won the race by playing a trick on Jeff King. We sent an email to G.B. Jones to tell him we were sorry that he had leave the race. We were interested in who would get the Red Lantern award - the last person to finish. This year, Deborah Bicknell put out the red lantern.

Before our holiday vacation, the KinderKids talked about the meaning of peace. It is a hard concept for young children to grasp. We read several books and had many discussions. The children all agreed to try to be peacemakers and to get along with others. One of our classroom rules says "Take care of friends." By connecting with children around the world, the KinderKids are learning to value differences and will someday help create unity in the world they inherit.

We share our message of peace with you through a song we learned. Peace is the World Smiling is by Karen Stokes and Sequoia Butler on Peace is the World Smiling by Music for Little People.

Learning About Hanukkah

Article posted December 18, 2007 at 11:01 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 812

Mrs. Shepard shared her family traditions about Hanukkah. She read several of her favorite books to us. We learned about some of the things she does for Hanukkah. We enjoyed looking at the menorah. We learned that every night, first the shamash is lit and then it is used to light a candle for each day of Hanukkah. On the last day, the shamash and eight candles are lit.

We wondered how long it would take for the candles to burn. It takes a very long time - almost 45 minutes. We noticed that the blue ones burned faster than the white ones. Does the color make them burn faster? Does anyone know the answer?

Then we wondered how many candles a family would need for all eight days of Hanukkah. We made a pretend menorah and every KinderKid "lit" the candles until we finished all eight days. then we counted the candles (unifix cubes) to find out how many. Can you figure out how many candles you need?

Thank you Mrs. Shepard for teaching us.

Since the first day of school, the KinderKids have been keeping many monarch caterpillars fed with milkweed leaves. All the caterpillars have changed to chrysalis and now, each day we have one or two butterflies emerging.

We are tagging our monarchs to help scientists learn more about monarch migration. We hope our butterflies make it to Mexico.

We have been learning about monarch butterflies. On Friday, the last of our caterpillars became chrysalis. We have several chrysalis in the classroom. We are waiting to see a butterfly emerge. They seem to emerge when we are not at school. Perhaps be will be lucky this week. Several chrysalis are turning darker.

Here is the whole class wearing their monarch caterpillar hats.

During our shoe greeting, we noticed that many children wore sandals to school. We wondered how many people wore sandals, so we made a graph. We sorted the shoes and then wondered about our graph.

How many people wore sandals? How many people wore sneakers? How many wore other shoes? Which had more/less? How many more/less? How many more slide shoe people would we need for the same amount as sneakers?

What do you notice?

The KinderKids spent one hot morning exploring with sand and water. On this day, they experimented with something they learned from the Voyagers from New Zealand.

They made and high sand mountain and then sprayed water over it. They looked for streams to form. The KinderKids decided they wanted a bigger mountain and proceeded to add to the landscape. Tunnels were made because the wondered what would happen when the water came. KinderKids demonstrated wonderful cooperation, helpfulness and hard work. They never gave up. What a fun time spent working with friends.

Author/Illustrator, Paul O Zelinsky Visits Deerfield

Article posted June 2, 2007 at 08:41 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 841

We had a school visit from an award winning author/illustrator. It was fun to hear how Paul O Zelinsky decided to write and design the movable book, Knick Knack Paddy Whack. He worked with a paper engineer, Andrew Baron, who lives in New Mexico. They never met until the book was being printed. That reminded us of the friends we know but have never met.

We learned some interesting things about this book. At first, Paul Zelinsky thought there would be one old man but it didn't seem right. So he thought about what story could be told with the song and decided on many little men playing the different numbers. We also learned that there are other rhyming pictures on each page. Visit his website to learn more about Paul O Zelinsky and his work.

Last week we took a trip to the Great Bay Discovery Center. The Lamprey River begins at Freese's pond by our school. It travels through many towns on its way to Great Bay. It is fresh water. The Great Bay is salt water because it goes to the Atlantic Ocean. We hoped to see horseshoe crabs. This time of year, they come to shore to lay their eggs. We are learning a song about water. We like these words....
Animals need water. People need it too.

Our New Class Pet

Article posted April 15, 2007 at 10:20 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 1051

The KinderKids have adopted a Webkinz! After hearing a teacher friend, Bob Sprankle talk about his daughter's Webkinz, I became very curious. Mrs. Laskowsky's daughter helped me learn more. After talking with the KinderKids, I found out that we had several "experts" in our own classroom.

After a long, elaborate decision making process, the children named our Webkinz, Spikey Spike. Spike enjoys reading with the children, watching their activities and joining the class at meeting time. For a few weeks, we enjoyed our soft, cuddly friend before meeting his online, computer version.

I am not promoting this toy as something that everyone has to purchase for their child. I'd prefer that your child be playing outdoors. I am using Spike and the Webkinz website as a learning opportunity. When we use the website, we have opportunities to discuss appropriate behavior for online safety and also about how much computer game time is okay. We are also making decisions about spending our virtual money, choosing foods that promote health and making good purchasing choices.

I am just beginning to explore how to use the Webkinz site as an educational tool. The Webkinz craze has hit the elementary school population. My hope that the Webkinz folks will strive to make their site an educational and creative experience instead of encouraging mindless spending of KinzCash. In the meantime, it is important to provide the children with the information that keeps them safe and wise while having an online presence. Please let me know what you think.

The words they are singing are:

Haru ga kita haru ga kita
Doko ni kita
Yama ni kita sato ni kita
No nimo kita

Spring has come, spring has come
Where has it come to?
In the mountains, in the villages
And also in the fields.

Crazy Hats

We made crazy hats last week in honor of Dr. Seuss. We wanted hats that were different from the Cat in the Hat. The KinderKids wrote this entry during their shared writing time.

This is about our crazy hats. The teachers put 3 pieces of newspaper on our heads. Then they taped the newspaper, around and around our heads. We crumpled the edges and looked in the mirror. We took off the hat and spread glue on the hat. Then we put on colored tissue paper to cover the newspaper. We let it dry.

We put decorations on the hats. We put on feathers, flowers, hearts, ribbons, stickers, cotton balls, pipe cleaners and colored papers. Everybody had a different hat. There were lots of different colors.

We went on a parade to classes in the school. We took our hats home. These are our hats. Do you like our hats?

Important Things About Birds

Article posted January 31, 2007 at 06:31 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 692

We read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown and we wrote our own story page about birds.

The important thing about birds is that
they have wings
and feathers
and bills.

Some birds are big.
Some birds are small.

They make nests.
They hatch from eggs.

Some birds can fly.
Some birds can’t fly.

There are many colors for birds.
The boys can be different colors from the girls.
Some can look the same.

Some birds eat seeds.
Some birds eat meat.
Some birds eat insects.

But the important thing about birds is that
they have wings
and feathers
and bills.

Our Second Writing Celebration

Article posted January 24, 2007 at 05:18 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 861

Writers big and small, from near and from far away, gathered for the KinderKids writing celebration today. The KinderKids have learned to catch small moments from their lives and to write about them. They learned to write with details so the readers can get a really clear picture. We celebrated the wonderful writing by having each reader share their story. Then we met with our big buddies and showed them our writing. We had refreshments after that.

Thank you to the Goobers, Abby's mom, Mr. Warburton and to our eighth grade buddies. Thank you also to our eighth grade buddies for the wonderful comments you wrote at the end of each story. Thank you also for your tech support during our video chat with the Goobers.

Outdoor Time

We went outside today to play in the snow. There isn't much snow but we still had fun. Some children wanted to take care of our bird friends. They used the hay from our old scarecorws to make nests for the birds. Some children spread seeds for the birds and waited for the birds to come. No birds came to the children but after we went away, a chickadee came to our feeder.

A Short Week

Our math work involved exploring number arrangements. We used various math materials and worked with one number to make arrangements. Can you describe our arrangements using numbers. Can you find an arrangement of 5 that is 2+1+2 ?

We also explored a new math material that we call crystal jewels. We will use them to explore number arrangements next week.

We went to see the older students perform the play "Fiddler on the Roof". There was lots of singing and dancing. Some of the eighth graders used to be in Mrs. Knee's kindergarten. They were the first kindergarten students at our school.

Several birds are coming to our feeders and we are learning to find them on our bird charts. We have nuthatches, black capped chickadees, gray slated juncos and goldfinches. We want to see a northern cardinal and a blue jay.

What Will This Week Bring?

Article posted January 16, 2007 at 07:59 AM GMT-5 • comment (2) • Reads 725

Last week was filled with learning a bit more about birds, art work, going to the computer lab, speed stacking, celebrating a birthday, visiting with the Goobers in Maine and much more.

This short week is off to an icy start and it sounds like the weather will be cold for several days. We may be spending some days inside if it is too cold to be on the playground.

Happy New Year

Article posted January 3, 2007 at 05:05 PM GMT-5 • comment (3) • Reads 773

The KinderKids are back at school and ready to get on with the school year. We went to the library today and heard the story, The Mitten by Jan Brett. We think this would be fun to act out this story.

We learned that our friends the Goobers have started an online counting book. They hope that there will be 100 pictures by the one hundredth day of school. We are at day 78. During math workshop, we counted many different things in our room and took pictures for the counting book. The web address is on the left side of our page.

Maybe you would like to add something to the book. It is very easy!

December 21, 2005

Article posted December 28, 2006 at 09:01 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 704

We had a great day at school before leaving for our holiday vacation. We read a book called "Snip, Snip Snow". The main character wanted snow to fall just like we were hoping for. She cut out lots of snow flakes at school and that afternoon, it started to snow.

We cut out lots of snow flakes but we did not have any snow fall. Perhaps after vacation there will be snow. We are anxious to make snowmen and to go sliding.

Our families prepared a wonderful lunch buffet for us. The food was great. We all enjoyed ourselves.

Mrs. Knee read "The Night Tree" which is about a family taking care of nature by decorating a tree just for the animals. Since we like to take care of nature too, we made bagel birdfeeders and hung them out for our bird friends. We will be studying about birds after vacation.

See you in 2007!

We read the book "Adventure on Klickitat Island" by Hilary Horder Hippley. We decided to make a mural of a page from the story.

There is a big storm on Klickitat Island and the animal are out in the rain and wind. Beary and the boy row out to the island to help the animals build a fort to keep them all snug and dry. Can you see some of the "blankie" in the picture? It is like our paper quilt.

You can hear the audio to go with the pictures by clicking on the picture.

We measured the ingredients and mixed the dough. We chilled the dough and today we made the cookies with our big buddies. When the cookies were done, we had a cookie party. Next week, we will use Survey Monkey to tell what was our favorite cookie.

We made disguises because you can't look like a person at the teddy bear picnic. After lunch, we had quiet time with our bears.

I'm Back!

Article posted November 15, 2006 at 05:30 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 708

On Thursday night, my body said "Enough" and finally surrendered to the many kindergarten germs that have been hanging out in the classroom. After refusing to admit defeat on Friday and Saturday, I gave up and accepted that I had lost the battle. But now I'm back and feeling much better although not quite at the 100% mark yet.

We've read several of the Little Bear stories by Nottingham resident, Else Holmelund Minarik. While I was gone, the class chose "A Kiss for Little Bear" to practice and to then perform for me upon my return. What a great surprise!
