In reading today we read books about animal babies. We watched a little video about the different animal coverings: fur, feathers and scales and then made a little booklet about what animals wear. In math we talked about the differences and similarities in shapes, then we tried to create shapes with our bodies.

In reading today we had some fun reviewing Star Words and learning a new routine for Working With Words, as we played a modified game of Bannana Grams.
We began a non-fiction unit on animals today. We listened to the big book Animal Babies ABC book. We learned a few things we didn't know before. Did you know baby bears are born without teeth, just like us? And have you ever heard of an Ibex?
The AM class started their first Small Moment piece and the PM class practiced adding numbers as they rolled.

On Friday the AM class was treated to a presentation by the Syracuse Silver Knights soccer team. They stressed the importance of practice in our everyday lives. Thank you Elden PTA for bringing them to us!

Today in reading we practiced reading short /i/ words as we played Connect 4. We also listened to the folktale Stone Soup. In math today the AM class learned a little bit about the calculator. And since we had PE today, there were several tie sneakers. So after we had some fun sorting our shoes, those who knew how to tie got to demonstrate and then sign the "I Know How To Tie" poster. These students have now become the official shoe tying helpers!

Today in reading we talked about Skippy Kangaroo reading strategy. This is where we skip a word, read the rest of the sentence and then go back to figure out the word. Has your child sung our reading strategy song for you yet? We also learned about farming long ago and today. In writing workshop we started our next unit, Small Moments.

Yesterday and today in reading we had guided reading. All of the books were food related, so the AM class had a hard time reading them without feeling hungry! We learned a new reading strategy called Stretchy the Snake, where we stretch out the sounds in words then blend them together. We practiced this strategy along with the others we have learned (getting our mouth ready, checking the pictures and using our background knowledge)as we read our books.
Today we listened to the story Sadie and the Snowman and then sequenced pictures of a melting snowman. The PM worked on writing sentences for each of the pictures, the AM class will finish them up on Friday.
Yesterday in math we got to play Top It and today we practiced counting up to 100 by ones, fives and tens. We also discovered by counting by fives that we have a total of 200 fingers in our class!
