Visual arts projects this term have focussed on the Australian identity - what is it? Do we really see ourselves as people from other parts of the world see us? If not, why? What images of Australia are we proud to present to the world? Which ones make us cringe?
Only a few years ago many Australians were embarrassed by the image Steve Irwin presented of Australians - "ocker" ruffians with a strange vocabulary that suggested we didn't understand "real" English. Now he is Australia's favourite son. Thankfully that acceptance had begun before he sadly passed away.
It does however make us think about our image and how and why it changes over time. Some of the students have completed a photo montage exploring our current Austalian image and have produced wonderful artworks. Thank you to the Flickr Creative Commons Search for the photos used in these artworks. This is one of them, and over the next little while the other students will upload theirs to their blogs, so keep watching out for them!
And if you are reading this from outside Australia, we would really love some feedback via comments. What do you think the Austalian image is?

Mrs Ruskin is now anxiously awaiting the arrival of her new baby, we are all so excited for her. Meanwhile I am holding the fort for her until she returns. The class has been busy on the production of puppet shows - most have now been filmed and are in the process of being edited. We'll get them up on the blog asap.
Meanwhile we are also putting up some great freestyle poetry written by the kids, and in the next week or two we will be adding some of their more recent artworks.
Thanks again to everyone who sends a comment to any of the students, it is really fantastic to get some feedback and everyone loves to receive "mail"! Don't forget that suggestions are always welcome!

Hi All,
I've signed up for a Teacher Tube account and I'm about to do the first test. This is a Photostory made by my son when he was 5. Ok, I helped him a bit but he did all the narrations and the movement effects :)
Let's get some puppet shows happening.
cheers
Mr B

The creature photos will be posted during the next week, so please stay tuned. In the meantime the Ace Kids have something else to ponder.
When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon all those years ago, his famous words were "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". The Ace Kids have been asked to think about what they would have said if they were the first man to land on the moon. I think I would have sung something like this, "Wouldn't it be nice if the moon were Cadbury....".
What would you have said?

After being exposed to a range of descriptive text and having ample opportunity to write detailed descriptions, the Ace Kids were asked to describe a creature that mysteriously appeared in their backyards swinging from the Hills Hoist (clothesline). Little did they know that on their return to school they would be creating a 3D model of this. The Ace Kids have a picture of their creature, however their creatures are yet to be named. The students would like to put it out to YOU! Please study the photo carefully, read their brief but detailed descriptions and very kindly suggest a name. Thanks for your input.

Hi to all Ace Kids,
Forrest Gump did say that 'Life is like a box of chocolates'..... you know the rest. In class we thought it was like an ice-cream... you could either lick it or let it drip on your shoe! The Ace Kids certainly choose to 'Lick It'!
During the term we looked at analogies and similes, some were great others not so great;
* He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch tree.
*She fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a bag filled with vegetable soup.
* Her hair glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.
* The hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when you fry them in hot grease.
Mmmmmmm.....
As we prepare to head off on our 3 week break from school, I wish you all a safe and adventurous holiday. On your return I will be asking you to write an analogy or simile about your holiday. I look forward to reading your work.
