The Amazing Moa Hunt

Article posted August 12, 2010 at 05:52 AM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 333

Yesterday Room 21 performed a play for the school in assembly. We had a range of characters on the 'Amazing Moa Hunt'. There were hunters, kauri trees, kokako birds and bumblebees to name just a few. What a fantastic effort by everyone in Room 21, the show went well and the humour was really enjoyed by the audience.

The photos will be posted soon... just some issues at the moment with the way slide.com is displaying them.

We have been very, very lucky in Room 21 to have Jessica Armour working with us for the last 8 weeks. Jessica is in her third year of study to be a teacher and will qualify at the end of this year.

Room 21 loved having her in our class. What an awesome teacher she is. So we were very sad to farewell her last Friday. She is missed by all.

Good luck in your teaching career Jessica, any school would be lucky to get you!!!

70's and the Toy Castle

Article posted June 30, 2010 at 11:09 PM GMT • comment • Reads 97

This term we've learnt all about change over the decades, particularly the 70's decade. We've learnt about all sorts of aspects of the 70's decade, the toys, fashion, games, sports, rules, school, punishment, transport and more... We were really lucky to visit the Toy Castle in Tirau last week. There is a huge variety of toys that demonstrate the changes through the ages. Because we were learning about the 70's, we decided to go dressed in theme, check out our wonderful 70's hippies, disco divas and more.

A huge, huge thanks to our wonderful parents who joined us on this trip, we could not have done it without you!

Hawaiian Experience

Article posted June 15, 2010 at 01:24 AM GMT • comment • Reads 600

We had an amazing Hawaiian experience this morning when a group of graduate teachers from Hawaii came for a visit. They sang to us, and we sang waiata to them. After that, we moved around 'stations' where groups of teachers taught us some Hawaiian combat games. In the Hawaiian version of Tug of War (boys versus girls), our class was so strong that we snapped the rope in two! We really enjoyed the visit and now we have some great games to play at morning tea and lunchtimes.

We were really lucky today at Otonga, we had some special visitors with their wonderful old cars. This was a great opportunity to see how cars have changed in the last 50 years or so. There were even cars that were older than that. Check out our photos...

Technology Challenge

Procedural Writing is our year long focus at Otonga School, so in Room 21 we have been learning how to write in a procedural format. We took a baking video from Youtube and wrote a recipe to match it, making sure that our instructions were precise enough for anyone to follow.

We are now designing and making wet weather games (using a limited list of materials) and when they are finished, we are going to write a set of instructions that tell others how to play our games.

Once the instuctions are finished we are going to share our games with others and get them to evaluate how good our instructions were.

We are really enjoying having the time to just design and create. Check out our photos...
