For the Term 3 Practical Applied Arts (PAA) program a "World Music" class is being offered, allowing students to be introduced to the fundamentals of world music. In this course, students will hear examples of world music, research different musical styles and instruments, participate in drum circles, create drum compositions, and learn from a variety of special guest lecturers.

In the Fall of 2010 Ken Jenkins school will be closing down, and as part of the transition process various grades at both Ken Jenkins and Elsie Mironuck participated in an Art Exchange.

Students filled out surveys describing themselves and their interests. Each of these surveys was then exchanged with a student from the other school, with the goal of producing a piece of art for a new friend.

Music Monday Rehearsals

Article posted May 26, 2010 at 06:00 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 77

"Music Monday is an annual event that brings together thousands of students, musicians, parents and community members across the country to celebrate the gift of music in our lives, on the same day at the same time. The Coalition for Music Education in Canada launched Music Monday in 2005."

 - Coalition for Music Education, http://www.weallneedmusic.ca/

This year the students and staff at Elsie Mironuck celebrated our first annual Music Monday. On May 3rd all Mironuck students participated in 2 separate assemblies, featuring Serena Ryder’s "Sing Sing" as well as performances on Orff instruments, elementary band, and world drums. In addition they celebrated the other art forms with drama, dance and visual art displays with an emphasis on how music impacts these other areas. Our event showcased our full inclusive Grade 6 band program new to Mironuck this year. They were joined by a significant number of Grade 7/8 band students who took band as an elective. The event was also unique in that we are using it as a transition activity to welcome students from Ken Jenkins who will be joining us next fall.

Article posted May 26, 2010 at 05:10 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 66

This year, as part of the Practical Applied Arts (PAA) program, the students from Grades 6 to 8 worked together to create a production entitled "Dancing Through the Decades." Each student was placed in a dance class, given a decade, and collaboratively learned the fundamentals of dance centered around that decade.

Dance Story

Article posted May 3, 2010 at 03:21 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 119

During the creative process for Dancing Through the Decades, the Grade 5 students from Mme Lubenko's class worked on creating their own dance story. These students learned the fundamentals of dance (i.e. levels, pathways, transition, patterns and movement) and created their own beat using multiple percussion instruments.

In the end these performances were about how we can convey a story, using dance as the medium, and will be performed as part of our Music Monday celebration on May 3rd.

Fire and Ice (Updated!)

Article posted January 2, 2010 at 10:26 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 116

Brrrr!!

We are really pleased to announce that Elsie Mironuck students are participating in the annual Fire and Ice carnival. This is a great opportunity for our students to work with international, national and local artists including Regina's own Robin Poitras (artistic director of New Dance Horizons) with whom we are pleased to partner. Visual artist Chandra Larwood has provided an opportunity for our students to be introduced to the art of felting through the creation of scarves as a component of our costumes. Musical direction of the drummers is being lead by percussionist Aaron Coons in the creation of our sound tree and drum beats.

The Fire and Ice Carnival will take place on January 9th and 10th on the practice field at Mosaic stadium. We invite you all to come out and support our students' transformation into snow people.

Keep warm!

Ms. Madhur
