One of the first things I ask the writers in this class to do, is to brainstorm a list of careers that involve writing. They are often both surprised and encouraged by the number of careers they think of. The kids quickly realize the wide variety of media that relies on the skills and talents of writers.
The Awesome Authors had fun writing scripts for commercials. We used a website, called Xtranormal to turn these scripts into videos by choosing characters, sets, voices, actions, and camera angles. You can view these commercials by visiting the Authors' individual blog pages, or by clicking on the commercials' titles on the left side of this page. Enjoy!

Last week, we visited the offices of The Grand Forks Herald. Sue Lindlauf, along with several other Herald staff members, shared valuable information for young writers and readers. Sue's blog, entitled NIE Rocks!, is full of interesting information, activities, and links for students of all ages, as well as for parents and educators. You will find a link to NIE Rocks! under Related Links on the left side of this page. Please enjoy the slideshow below.

Writers can draw inspiration from the lives and talents of others, so visiting the North Dakota Museum of Art is always an enlightening experience for members of the Awesome Authors class. This year, Sue Fink led us through a fascinating exhibit called Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart, by Ethiopian artist Elias Sime. This exhibit was made up of over 100 works, created from materials such as goat skins, yarn stitching, mud and straw, buttons, bottle tops, animal horns, metal cans, and pieces of fabric. We also saw Young Dakota Artists, an exhibit featuring the works of 22 artists living and working in the Dakotas.
Sue told us about the life and the collection of artist Barton Benes, including his Museum Donor Wall. We are truly fortunate to have this extraordinary museum in our community. You will find a link to the NDMAO's website under Related Links on the left side of this page.

Adjectives Monsters

We've been talking about what writers would do without adjectives and adverbs (a.k.a. describing words), to help create pictures in the minds of readers. Without these special words, the kids could not have described the monsters they created with the Kid Pix Deluxe program. Please check out these marvelous monsters and the kids' descriptions on their individual pages!
