Autism; the Frustration of Not Communicating

Dr.SP,MD

People, who can’t express themselves, get so frustrated. Eventually leads to tantrums. You can’t die from it but you wish you were dead sometimes. You think that and act like that because you have autism. You are born with the disease. You can’t get away from that disease.

Job of a Neurologist

I am a neurologist (new-rol-le-gest). I am a doctor specialized in the nervous system. I treat autism (au-tis-sim). Patients come to see me in the clinic when they suffer from autism.

 Nervous System

Autism is affecting your nervous system. What is a nervous system you ask? The nervous system controls all body activities, and it consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves. The brain and the spinal cord are part of the central nervous system. The nerves in the outer part of the body make up the peripheral nervous system. The autonomic nervous systems are the nerves that are near the center of your body and they take care of all involuntary action. The brain includes three parts; the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brain stem. The cerebrum controls the same muscle movement, five senses, memory, voluntary movements, and thinking. The cerebellum organizes the coordination, movement, and balance. The brainstem manages the involuntary movements. The nervous system’s job is to sense things, sensory nerve cells and move things, motor nerve cell. First the sensory nerve cell senses things then the message goes through the nerve to the spinal cord and to the brain. The brain gives a command and the massage and travels back to the spinal cord to the motor nerve cell. A neuron has the dendrites that are long spidery looking long things with the cell body that is an egg looking things with an axon that is a size of a thick rope. The axon terminal is attached to the axon and sends messages to the next neuron. When you are in a life threatening or in a dangerous situation, your messages take the shortcut. The messages go to the spinal cord back to the motor nerve cells. Between the neurons are little spaces called synapse.

Did you know that autistic people have savant skills, such as multiplying 142536*3546 and they can do it mentally and they can be extremely smart in other things too?

Symptoms

An autistic person may be unusual in several ways. They may say a word over and over, have tantrums, flap their hands, or only play with a certain toy. They don’t like changes in their schedule and environment. They also like it when their toys are arranged in a certain way. They get upset when the toys are moved from their place. Symptoms of autism often appear when children are still babies. They don’t want to eat, they never smile or they look away when someone talks. They’re uninterested in their surroundings and they scream when they want something rather than ask.  They rock, spin, bang heads and walk on toes. They stare at hands, like only a certain toy and become sensitive on textures and in sounds.

Did you know that when you have autism you can get a seizure and cause problems in the body?

Disease

Autism is a disability of mental growth. Autism begins before the age of four. They are born with autism. It is a genetic disease, which is passed on. It is when patients can’t socialize with other people. Autism can have a four year old body but a one year old brain. But they are not retarded.

Affecting the system

Autism affects the sensory integration. Sensory integration is how people use the information of sense coming to them. Senses deliver the picture of the world around us. Your senses coordinate to complete the understanding of what is around us, who we are, and where you are etc. Then your brain uses the information about your senses and control from the knowledge of your sensory experience. They experience the world around them different than normal people.  For example we can touch a soft thing and it can be very painful for an autistic person.

The causes

1 out of every 100 people has autism. Maybe somebody can get it because it is genetic. We don’t know what causes autism because the human brain is complicated. Males may get it more than females. You can’t get autism from one another person like flu. Autism can be affected by Rett grey matter of the brain that affects females Syndrome (A Rett syndrome is a disorder of the more commonly than males. The medical features include small hands and feet and a deceleration of the rate of head growth .Repetitive hand movements, such as wringing and putting hands into the mouth, are also observed). And Fragile x Syndrome (Fragile X syndrome is a genetic condition involving changes in part of the chromosome. Autism is a common disease.

Treatment

We can’t cure or treat autism, but therapists, doctors, or special teachers can help the autistics people to learn how to speak, write, and blend in with other people. When you go to a special school, the earlier, the better. Therapist helps autistic people to communicate with “normal” people. Communication is the most important step for learning. When you learn how to communicate, the easier things are going to be for them. Some way or another they are going to talk. Therapist also help autistic people learn how to greet people, wait for a turn, and follow directions, these are called social skills. Some kids need help with things like brushing their teeth or making a bed. Some kids take medication, because they can’t control their temper, sit still, and their behavior. Till now there is no cure for autism.

Even though autism can’t be cured, you can treat the frustration. You can do something to help them. And although you can’t understand them you can donate money so scientists can discover more about.

Did you know that the word autism comes from the Greek word “auto” which means self and Eugen Bleuler: a Swiss Psychiatrist used the word autism first?

The First Time I Met Mrs. Branch

Article posted April 5, 2011 at 10:28 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 920

It was the first day at school and I was going to meet the principle with my parents. I wondered what is the school going to be like? Will the children be nice? Is the principle nice? I was going to find out soon.

When I went inside there was a woman with pajamas sitting on a desk. Weird I thought.
“This way please ,” she said
“Thank you,” my mom replied.

When I got inside Mrs. Branch’s office she was sitting there with her pajamas and a parrot perched on top of her shoulder. The office was filled with a pleasant smell; it smelled like cookies. She looked nice and looked like the kind of principle who encourages kids.
“Hello I suppose you are the new student” she said cheerfully
“Hello, yes she is the new student “my mom answered.
“Hi” I said shy like.
She looked at me warmly and asked me “It’s pajama day, do you want to wear your pajama?”
“OK I guess “I replied.
Then my mom and the principle started talking about where I should go (in class) and what we should know. I watched them and wondered who will be in my class and thought the principle is nice. Then I got in my pajamas.

After my parents had talked with the principle, the woman showed me my class. I enjoyed my classes. I thought after my classes that I liked my school.

Good Eating Habits

Article posted April 5, 2011 at 10:24 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 844

Good eating habits are important for children. Why do we have to eat the food our parents give us? You ask. These are the reasons why you should have a good eating habit.

When you eat too much or too little food you could be unhealthy. You could lose weight or get skinnier. You could also gain too much weight and get really fat. If you don’t eat you could get really unhealthy.
You can’t concentrate when you’re studying. When you get to school you get tired. You have to eat breakfast everyday (it’s healthy). You can’t refresh your mind because you yawn and get sleepy.

You eat to get energy. You get dizzy. In activities or in anything, you don’t have energy to do so, you’re not energetic. When you eat every single meal you could concentrate on your work and get good grades.

I hope these reasons have helped you and have helped you in school.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls: The Beautiful Creation

All the water coming from the mountain side…so beautiful yet it can be dangerous. You can see them when you are in the mountains. A waterfall is having a slope of 30 degree is a waterfall. What am I talking about? Waterfalls.

Formation
Are you wondering how waterfalls are formed? Waterfalls are formed by erosion. The river and the rain carry the sediments down the mountain side. Erosion means that the sediments get moved around. Sediments are rocks that get broken into smaller pieces by agents such as water, wind, and ice. But in waterfalls, only water causes erosion. Soft rock erodes more quickly than hard rocks. So you get a difference in level – and that’s a waterfall. So what makes a big waterfall? It takes over thousands, even million years to form a waterfall!!! If the river has a small amount of water (cascade) then the waterfall is small. Waterfalls form where water flows from hard to soft rock. Soft rock erodes faster, creating a vertical drop over the hard rock edge.

Waterfalls occur when band of rock crosses under a river. The water can’t wear the hard rock down, but it wears down soft rock, eventually this creates a steep drop.

Plunge Pool
When the water hits the bottom, after years and years they form a little bowl at the bottom of a waterfall that is called a boiling pot or plunge pool. In the plunge pool when an animal or anything comes down a waterfall it falls at the Boiling Pot and dies. They die because the water tends to go in circles and the animals can’t get out.

Millions of Years
Some waterfalls are incredibly high and some can be small, but have a large amount of water. Some are very high but have a small amount of water. So what makes a big waterfall? It takes over thousands, even million years to form a waterfall!!!

Location
You find waterfalls in every single continent except in Antarctica because the crust, a hard rock that is on top of the magma, is ice (all water) so there can’t be any waterfalls.
One of the famous fall, Victoria Falls, was formed in another way. The Zambezi River flowed along a gigantic crack then the rock eroded or got soft. The crack got bigger and bigger and the river flowed in the crack and became a waterfall.

Waterfalls can be exquisite. I think in the future waterfalls will keep growing. I think water will continue to erode the waterfall’s side. I hope you enjoyed learning about waterfalls. They can be (based on their features) ledge falls, slide falls, parallel falls, staircase falls (my favorite), and combination falls.3 m and very steep

My Most Honest Moment

Article posted March 28, 2011 at 10:43 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 814

I was in Third Grade, during lunch time everyone had to drink milk. If you didn’t drink the milk, you would be in trouble.

I hated milk, but I had to drink it. One time I couldn’t stand the smell of it so I pretended to drink my milk and finishing it. Then I put it on a box where we usually put it. When we were all finished drinking our milk, a student checked the milk boxes to check if everyone drank their milk. When he found out one of the milk box was full, he told the teacher. She was furious when she found out so she said “If the student that didn’t drink the milk didn’t show up you have to clean the bathroom, all of us.” I thought maybe it isn’t fair for the others and besides I didn’t want to clean the bathroom. I spoke up. I regretted it but at least I was honest.

I am From

Article posted March 28, 2011 at 10:25 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 802

I am from the wonderful smell of my grandma’s kitchen, from a grandma that visits me every summer on my birthday, and from cookies.
From a violin, and a companion named Celine, from a musical teacher that gives me so many music sheets, from Vivaldi songs that drive me nuts, and from classical concerts. I am from “how was school today?” and “let’s go shopping.“
I am from a cousin that doesn’t care about me, from “don’t do that” and “don’t touch this” and an aunt that has a cozy and a small house.
I am from a dad that plays golf every day, and a mom that cooks. I am from a mom that plays Handicap with me, from an uncle that kicks me every time I visit him, and from an uncle that does not want us to use his car. I am from a garden, and from a hose that is in the garden.
I am from Tinker Bell, Barney, and Power Puff girls, from a light blue blanket. I am from a friend, and from “are you free this Saturday”
I am from cute goldfish, from a classical teacher, from the right side of the bed, and from sushi. I am from students typing on their Alpha smarts going tic tic tic. I am from falling of a bicycle.

Heart Dissection

Article posted March 28, 2011 at 10:22 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 935

Students observed the dissection of the heart and lungs of a sheep, and dissected a sheep heart, as part of the science unit on the circulatory/cardiovascular system. Ms. Salem conducted the dissection.
Have you ever seen the inside of a sheep? A couple of days ago my classmates and I dissected a heart. Mrs. Salem dissected a heart for us in our classroom because we are studying about the circulatory system.
When Mrs. Salem pulled out a sheep’s lungs and the heart from a plastic bag, it wasn’t like what I imagined. I imagined the heart and the lungs to be bigger. Between the two lungs were the heart and two tubes projecting from the lungs. Then she blew into one of the tube; it is called a trachea. The lungs then inflated like a balloon you blow into. I was amazed!! Mrs. Salem then separated the heart from the lungs with a knife. The heart was the size of a fist. I watched her as she cut open the heart. First I saw the aorta, then the Inferior Vena Cavae and the Superior Vena Cavae, and then all of the parts of the heart began to show. Inside the ventricles and the atrium were these little strings called cordetas. It was a mesmerizing sight.
When we dissected the heart ourselves, I was disgusted because I had to cut and touch the heart. When I put my fingers into the aorta I was disgusted by how it felt, it felt like slimy slugs. Fortunately, we wore gloves so it wasn’t that sickening. Once I got used to the feeling, I began touching and putting my fingers in the Superior Vena Cavae and Inferior Vena Cavae, wincing a little.
This was my first dissection and it was mesmerizing, amazing, and revolting all at once. I thought it was cool so I decided that I wanted to become a doctor because even though it was pretty disgusting it was cool and I like science.
