First Nations peoples have been living in what is now called Canada for tens of thousands of years. Our class has just begun a new unit on First Nations people of the past. We plan to study the different cultural areas in order to appreciate and value the culture and traditions of First Nation people.

Study the map of Canada showing where the different First Nation groups lived during the pre-contact period. The six different areas are:
Northwest Pacific Coast (green)
Plateau (pink)
Plains (yellow)
Eastern Woodland (orange)
Subarctic (beige)
Arctic (purple)

As a group, make a list of anything and everything that you know about First Nations people from the past. Please discuss and write about their clothing, shelter, food, environment and ways of living. Do not worry if your answers are correct or not, just tell us what you know.

In our classroom, we have just finished reading the fourth book in the Joey Pigza book series by Jack Gantos. Joey is a young student who is faced with many challenges in his life. His home is in constant chaos and he definitely does not feel like he belongs at school. As we learn about Joey through this series we have begun to understand that it is hard to be different, especially at school. Explain to your group what kind of person Joey is and what some of the things are that he has to deal with. Once you have done that with your partners, have them help you to answer the following questions:

What words would you use to describe what it would feel like if everyone thought that you were different?
What would it feel like if you didn't belong and if you didn't have any friends?
Why is it important that the world understands that there are many people just like Joey?
What could you do if you had someone like Joey in your classroom?
