Caught you Reading

It is so amazing to see what readers you are all becoming.  Seeing the books you pull from your backpacks, or the way you share a story really is a tremendous feeling.  You should be proud of your efforts to read and discover new worlds and ideas.

The Stephanie Meyer series has arrived! As soon as it is processed, we will be ready to lend these exciting books.  Come talk to me about getting them or putting your name the waiting list.  I believe the first one is Twilight.  Come see me soon...

I will be watching for you to be reading for the next little while.  Look for your picture on the bulletin board if I catch you.  It is outside the library.  Some fourth graders are already up there!  Teachers - you can be caught too!

Happy Reading!

International Literacy Day

Article posted September 9, 2008 at 04:44 AM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 492

Thank you so much to all of the friends and families who came out today to join us for International Literacy Day. It was so nice to see the library all a buzz with the joy of reading. I saw adults reading to children and the children reading to the adults and siblings. It was such a good and positive feeling. I can’t wait to do something like this again.

Thank you also to the community school staff for providing the cake and coffee. I hear it was very good. I hope all of the people (over 40 of them) who won prizes were happy with their books – I sure saw a lot of pleased faces, both adults and students.

I forgot to mention that I also ordered My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. Jenna is looking forward to this one. Read it soon, a movie is being released starring Cameron Diaz in 2009.

If any of you have any other titles that you would like to see in the library come on in and let me know or else comment on my blog. I look forward to hearing from you.

Happy Reading! (Thanks Mrs. Ferguson)

Exciting News

Article posted September 6, 2008 at 06:16 AM GMT • comment • Reads 475

Today I ordered Stephanie Meyers entire Twilight series - all four books!  I know there are several people in grade 8 who will be very excited about this.  I ordered two sets so that more students may enjoy.  I am not sure when they will arrive but when they do I will bring them to your classroom.

I also ordered some other picture books including The Tadpole's Promise I am sure this will be a class favorite.  Do any of you remember it from other years?

Remember that Monday is International Literacy Day.  I hope you will be able to get a family member to join us sometime between 12:30 and 1:30.  There will be lots of prizes and coffee and cake for the adults 1:30.

I Read

Article posted September 5, 2008 at 07:54 AM GMT • comment • Reads 473

I want to take this opportunity to compliment the grade eight class for being such great library students. I was really impressed with their focus in class as well as their library surveys. I will definitely use the information they provided in order to enhance our library collection. Thank you all for your input. There are still a few more library surveys out there and I am really eager to read your thoughts.

Please try to get your “I Read” notes into me as soon as possible so they can be posted along with the Grade Ones – thank you Grade One! Also, I would sure be interested in taking your pictures with a book you read this summer just like the staff ones. If you bring it I will take your picture!

Today I read to the Grade 5, 6, and 7 classes – thanks for having me. Thank you also to Mrs.Hellofs for lending The Wolf Who Cried Boy by __________

which I read to the Grade sixes – they were a terrific audience and I can’t wait to go back! I also had a great time reading Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch to the Grade Seven Class. They talked about individuality after that (but not before I gave the tight roll demonstration – did anyone tight roll their jeans in high school?). I also read What I Like About Me by Allia Zobel Nolan. The students then talked about what they liked about themselves. I was really impressed!

By the way, make sure you check out Mrs. Hellofs’ 3,2,1,activity on her blog. I think it is a great idea for both staff and students to try out. What a great way to get to know each other.

Staff Reading and Soccer

Article posted September 4, 2008 at 05:15 AM GMT • comment • Reads 392

Did anyone notice the bulletin board outside of the computer lab? On it, there are pictures of all of the staff members and the books they read this summer. If you get a chance, go have a look at it and then ask your teachers about their book. It has already proved to be a great way to get staff members talking about their reading – just like we ask you to do! If you read something interesting this summer, bring it to me and I will take your picture too.

It was really terrific to have Ms. DesRoches come and give me a hand learning about the library. She had some excellent ideas, especially about adding board books for parents to borrow to read at home to their preschoolers. I always find that ideas really start rolling when you talk about them with another person. Thanks Ms. DesRoches!

For your information, the girl’s soccer practice was amazing. Each player is eager and keen to get playing. Mrs. Shumilak and I think we will have a really great team this year and it is going to be a lot of fun. Thank you all for coming out and don’t forget about Friday at 12:30 (after Frosty Friday).
