Summer Plans

Article posted May 20, 2009 at 05:25 PM GMT0 • comment (6) • Reads 3754

My family and I are going to have a busy summer. The week after we get out of school we are going camping near the Boundry Waters. I can't wait to catch and eat a whole bunch of Walleye! I am going to be going to a teacher workshop for one week and teaching at a technology camp for 2 weeks. We will be camping in Cross Lake over the 4th of July. In August we are going to the Black Hills where Abby and Ellie are going to a Ranch/Horse Riding Camp. It's going to be a fun, busy summer!

Pioneer Unit

Article posted April 28, 2009 at 08:30 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 654

We are right in the midst of our Pioneer unit. We are learning about westward expansion and the lives of the American Pioneers. The kids are in "wagon train" groups and they earn points to travel the trail from Missouri to Oregon by completing various learning activities. They have all updated their learning blogs with their latest "Pioneer Diary" entries.

I talked to Gary Paulsen!

Article posted December 11, 2008 at 06:27 PM GMT0 • comment (6) • Reads 1558

While I was at the TIES technology conference on Monday I went to a session about the Iditorod.  During the session Gary Paulsen, my favorite author of all time, joined us via SKYPE.  He was at his home in New Mexico. Gary has written many books about his experiences as a musher, but retired from running major events in the late 1980's due to heart disease.  Much to my surprise and excitement his name was on the 2006 Iditarod roster.  He had a blog which told about his preparations.  And then, he scratched.  And nothing else was posted to his blog.  And I have wondered for 2 years what happened.  So,  during the live video session I asked Gary what happened.  His first question was, "How graphic do you want me to be?" and his next question was, "Are there any kids in the room?".  So, he told a group of teachers what happened.  It involved a fence, a deep cut and blood.  That's all I'm going to tell.

Eco Systems

Article posted October 3, 2008 at 07:48 PM GMT0 • comment (3) • Reads 1198

We have been working on eco system projects for science. Everyone has done a fantastic job! We are going to do a really cool technology project that involves students using a green screen and superimposing themselves into a digital still picture. It appears that the kids are reporting "live" from their ecosystem. I can't wait to see the finished products!

Speaking Eagle

Article posted September 11, 2008 at 06:47 PM GMT0 • comment (4) • Reads 1533

This is a story I wrote last year about a day on the river with my nephew.

“It’s a perfect day for fishing on the river,” I thought, as the boat carrying my dad, mom, and 4 year old nephew Zach, sliced through the water.
I looked on as Zach proudly steered the fishing boat down the Crow Wing River. My parents kept a watchful eye, making sure that no mistakes were made that would threaten our safety as the boat was driven by a 4 year old.
The river water was a smooth as glass, the majestic trees lining the river bank showed in picture perfect reflection. The warm air blew in my face as we motored to our preferred fishing spot.
I breathed in deeply enjoying the fresh-water smell of the river and the surrounding green vegetation. These are the smells of my childhood. I have come to realize that the only time that I am completely at peace is when I am on or in water.
As we neared the fishing spot, I saw something large flying through the air. I turned my head, and to my astonishment, saw a bald eagle swoop down, snatch a fish from the water, and fly to the other side of the river, about two hundred yards away.
I could clearly see the eagle’s white head amongst the dark green foliage surrounding it. Then looking up into the tree that the eagle had flown from, I saw two young eaglets. Then, the mother eagle and the babies began calling to each other across the river.
I pulled Zachary close to me and put my check against his. I said “See Zachary, that’s the mama eagle over there and these are her babies. She is saying, “Hi kids. It’s Mom. I’m over here across the river. I’ve caught a fish and I’m eating it. Soon, I’ll bring one back for you. And the baby eagles are saying, “ We are safe over here in the tree, Mom. We are getting hungry. Hurry back!”
Zachary looked at me, his brown eyes shining. He said, “You mean you speak eagle?”

This is the third year that I have used Blogmeister student blogs with my third graders. It is so motivating for third grade writers to have a "real world" audience. I love the feature that shows how many people have read your posts. We will be posting soon.

Minnesota History Center

Article posted February 7, 2008 at 04:59 PM GMT0 • comment (2) • Reads 1261

Last week our class took a field trip to the Minnesota History Center in S. Paul. It was a wonderful day. My favorite exhibits were the new Minnesota 150, having to do with 150 of the most important things about Minnesota and the Open House: If these walls could talk. This exhibit displays an old house and the displays depict the families that lived in the house thought the years. The most memorable exhibit is the tornado re-enactment. At the end of the day we had a presentation called "When I was a Kid". We learned all kinds of information about the lives of kids 100 years ago. We also took lots of photographs of artifacts. We were so interested in this presentation, we decided to write our own book. So were are in the process of finding good pictures and information about the lives of kids in Carlton County 100 years ago.

Holiday Plans

Article posted December 21, 2007 at 07:18 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 134

It's been a great day at school today. We started the day with a visit from the Madrigals (Sr. High choir) and then a visit from the orchestra. Next we invited parents in to make gingerbread houses. The kids spent the rest of the day nibbling on them!

I'm looking forward to spending the holidays with my family. Abby, Ellie, Bruce and I will spend the day at home together tomorrow and have our little family Christmas. Sunday we will head to Brainerd to spend a few days with my family there. The kids will all get lots of ice skating and sledding time in.

When we come back to school we will have a visitor. Her name is Mrs. Lind. She will be student teaching in our classroom for 12 weeks! It's going to be great having 2 teachers in the classroom.
