We are a New Zealand class of Year Five & Six (nine - 11 years) children.
We will navigate our journey of leadership in our school through service. To be effective leaders we will draw on the virtues of co-operation, excellence, diligence, unity, creativity, enthusiasm and courage.

We are getting ready for our upcoming school production 'The Stars Come Out Fro Christmas' and can't give away too much by putting up photos. All classes are making costumes, props, learning our songs and learning our parts. Navigators have been working hard on 'being in role' to really bring our characters to life. Acting brings together quite a few skills that require us to really step out of our comfort zones. This morning we tried out a series of different walks to see how to convey a range of characters to our audience ... we had LOTS of laughs!

One of the things we believe is important at our school is finding out what children want to learn about. One of the ways we do this is by survey. This week every child in the school will be asked the same questions, from this we find the common threads and then the teachers get together to plan the inquiry topics, schoolwide events etc around this.
I am interested in hearing about how other schools plan to include more student voice in their school. If you have any great things you do then leave me a comment, email me, or have a chat on skype.

Now is the time of year when my school surveys the children to try and set the direction for the next year. We ask them for their opinions and feedback throughout the year also but this is the time when the children get asked the exact same questions in the same week.
It is one way of finding out what the children have enjoyed, what they still want to know and what kind of things they are thinking about.
My class seem to have enjoyed EVERYTHING and just want to know more and more!
Chainmail making is still a hot topic ... so for those of you who are keen here is a link for you.

Well Art Exhibition is over for another year. There were twenty schools from our local area exhibiting and a steady stream of visitors came to see the childrens wonderful work.
We had an large crowd for our Kapa Haka performance. It was lovely to hear voices of past students joining in to our waiata from all around the audience - teenagers are NOT too cool to sing with us!

Come to assembly tomorrow in the school hall to see some of our findings about habitats. We will continue this learning and think about our chosen animals needs in the future over the coming weeks.
Here is a SNEAK preview for our readers!

I can't believe it is week three already ... I can just feel this term trickling through my fingers already! Navigators are deeply immersed in their inquiry and they have discovered some really interesting facts!
On Friday the children worked with real creativity, diligence and focus to create a TEXTURE SQUARE that reflected some of the important aspects of their animal. Their STUNNING texture squares are on our inquiry wall where visitors are invited to touch gently.
Here are two of the squares you will be able to feel if you come to class to visit us.

We have got into our 'Animal Antics' inquiry with a hiss and a roar. We have cared for our eggs, had a pet blessing and recorded our first thoughts podcasts and it is only Thursday - great work Navigators! Thank you Brother Bill for blessing our dogs Gordan and Max.
We are refining our research questions, making a key words list and beginning our information collecting now.

As our readers will know we are caring for an egg for 48 hours. It is not going so well! Today we managed to break several eggs and the carpet smells like raw eggs in at least five spots (don't worry, carpet cleaner being applied as soon as they dry!).
Quite a few eggs have gone the way of Humpty!
The exercise really is promoting the thinking it was intended for though which is great. We even have had egg-sitters during morning tea and lunch breaks.
Our 48 hours ends at 3 pm on Wednesday.
We have also been recording our first thoughts about our inquiry animal on photobooth. We will use these thoughts later to reflect on what we have actually learned. We will then come up with some action we can take that will make a differnce for our animal.
