Title: City Wildlife Animal Report (11/29/08)
Description: Think about the different stories we have been reading about in our City Wildlife Unit. You are going to choose one of these animals to write about. Make sure to write about it's appearance, it's food, and how it survives in the city.

Celeste R -- Mice In the City

Mice live in barns, field mice live in the meadows, but they can also live in houses. I am going to tell you how mice live and what they do in cities. These are the three things I will write about; how mice look like, what they eat, and how they survive in cities.

How do mice look like? The pups or baby mice weigh less than a quarter of an ounce at birth. They are hairless and have closed eyes and ears. They can grow up to four to eight inches as adults including the tail. They have pointed snouts. Whiskers can tell mice how big a hole is. They have rounded ears and long thin tales. This is how they look like.

What do mice eat? They usually eat planted food like veggies and fruits. They will also eat meat and dairy products when they can't find veggies and fruit. They do not drink too much water. They don't because they rely on the moisture in these foods. They will eat anything that is open in our kitchen drawers like cereal, packages of bread or cookies, and food left out on the kitchen counters or tables. This is what they eat.

How do mice survive in the city? They live in hidden places so that predators can't get them or people can't find them and kill them. They hate the light so, they live in hidden places. They are awake at dusk and night, they are nocturnal. They live together to protect themselves. They don't have good eyes but, they have good sense of smell and hearing. By being good at smelling, they can find food easily. By hearing good, they can hear people and predators around them. They can also squeak to warn other mice of danger.

I think that mice are really interesting. This is what I learned. I learned that they use their whiskers to see how big a hole is. I also learned that they prefer to eat veggies and fruits. Finally, I learned that they use their sense of smelling and hearing to survive. I hope you enjoyed my city wildlife animal report.
