Esperanza Rising We read Esperanza Rising as a read aloud in class, and I think that it is a magnificent book.
It was written by Pam Munoz, and the story takes place during the year of 1930.
Esperanza, a spoiled and pampered girl, lived with her parents and servents in Rancho De la Rosas, Mexico.
In the beginning of this book Esperanza's father (Sixto) told her to listen to the Earth's heartbeat, but Esperanza couldn't hear anything.
On their way back to the ranch, her father told her that she had to listen harder. They have a very close relationship.

It was the day before Esperanza's birthday, and her father went out, and on his way back home, he got killed by bandits. Esperanza and her mother were devastated, and were confronted by his jealous brother Tio, who wanted to marry Esperanza's mother, and take over the ranch.
Esperanza's mom refused to, so Tio set their house on fire.
Later on, Esperanza, her mother, and the servants all migrated to California, to work at a camp.

I don't want to spoil the story for you if you wanted to read it, so I'm going to stop here.
