Every yearin January the students read biographies of their choice. After they read the biography they write a letter to somone summarizing the famous person's life. In addition to mailing their letters, the students have posted their biography summaries to their blogs. Who have you read about? What did their life teach you?

So many teachers, principals, and parents have quotes of advice for starting a new school year. Here at Cold Spring our motto for the new year is "Be more than just ok!" We want to extend ourselves and do more than what is required.
Do you have a favorite quote or saying to share? Why do you think your quote is important? What is the message it gives?
Thanks for helping us own our learning as we begin the new school year.

The last weekend of summer is coming to an end. I had a wonderful time in Ocean City New Jersey and got to spend time with my husband, and both my sons. That is really a treat! I also read "The Art of Racing in the Rain." It is a great book for dog lovers, like me!
I was at school last week unpacking supplies and books for the coming year. Have you decorated your writer's notebook yet? I always liked getting new supplies for school. I have loved reading your blog posts and your survey comments. I can tell we are going to have a great year.
Enjoy your last week or so of summer and I'll see you soon.

Wow! What a great summer it has been! I hope you are having a great summer too! Remember we talked about our goals and plans for the summer? How are they coming? What are you up to?
I have been so busy...I have spent a lot of time in my garden, although lately it has been too hot. I have also been running, swimming, and riding my bike. I was really slow, but I finished and am proud of my hard work. And guess what, I did my first triathlon! I hope you are having good luck with your sports and activities.
I hope you are reading some good things. I just finished the second book of the Hunger Games series. Wow! It is a pretty intense series. What are you reading?
Anybody go on vacation yet? I know some of you were going on cruises. I'll bet they were loads of fun! I have spent some time at the Jersey Shore. Mr. Griffin and I are going to Maine too to see Acadia National Park.
I look forward to hearing about your summer. Make sure to check in on your fourth grade classmates' posts too. Enjoy the rest of your summer, and I'll see you in September.

Homework has been around since the first days of school. Many people, including teachers, wonder if children should have homework. Is homework an important way to reinforce learning and include parents in their child's school experiences? Or, is homework too much work after a long, hard day? The students gave some thought to homeowrk and wrote a blog post. We would love to know what you think. Please see the individual blogs to the left.

Fot the past three or so years, my class has been participating in Voices of the World. Every month, students from all over the world create a project using their voices in their native languages. The projects are hosted on the Voices of the World site for all to see and hear. This month the students drew self-portraits which were then placed on a Voicethread. Students then recorded their voices and introduced our class. We hope you enjoy our work.

In honor of International Dot Day on Wednesday, September 15 we had a celebration. Although a few students had heard "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds before, most had not, including two adults in my classroom. They enjoyed the story and responded with claps for Vashti and her spirit. After that students chose water colors or markers - both things they don't get enough of to create their own dot art. For 30 minutes students collaborated, created, felt capable. Enjoy the slideshow of our day as well as the students' writing about their dots.

I know that New Year's is in January in the United States but I always feel like the start of a new school year is a real new year. I have had an amazing summer with lots of learning, travel, fun, and relaxation. Well, maybe not "lots" of relaxation. I have read a lot and worked in my garden - although not too much of that because of the heat! I am looking forward to getting to know my new students and getting to see former students. Here's wishing everyone a great year!
I rode a helicopter and walked on a glacier! I was really scared, but really proud of myself for doing it anyway!

As a way to learn more about data and understandi it, we are researching CSE fourth graders' favorites. Please take each of the surveys below. Each one is only one question. Thank you!!
Look outside our classroom and on our wiki for some graphs, charts, and conclusions. We hope to expand our data collection to include other states, and maybe even 4th graders in other countries! Thanks again!!

I can hardly believe that we are halfway through our break. I have been very busy but still have lots I want to do. I had a great time in Washington, DC at the NECC conference meeting people, learning new things, and hearing others' ideas. I also had the chance to see two Smithsonian Museums for the firat time - The Native American and the the Botanical Gardens. Both were inspiring. I also got to see a real life pitcher plant and strangler fig like in the Great Kapok Tree.
Finally, I spent 4 days at the Jersey shore and met a student from our class next door. We saw each other on the beach every day. I hope you are all having a fantastic summer and I look forward to hearing from you.

While most people in America celebrate a new year in January, teachers are on a different schedule. The "year" ends in June and begins in August/September. What then is summer? Summer is a time for relaxing and renewing, reflecting on the just completed year - what went well, what needs to be changed. Students too have a chance to relax and reflect. What went well for YOU in fourth grade? What would you like to be different next year? Let us know how your summer is going.
I am off to Maryland today for three days of fun and learning with the Discovery Network. Then on Sunday I am visiting Sidwell Friends (where the Obama girls go to school) for a day. Monday begins three more days of fun and learning at the National Educational Computing Conference where I will be on a panel discussion about teachers learning together. Talk with you soon.

I am curious about the book you are reading, or one you have just finished. Please read below about a book I just finished and then write a comment telling about your book.
I have just finished reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It is a historical fiction book set in England right after World War estruction from the war and she wants to find something happy and light to write about. She accidentally becomes connected to some people who live on the island of Guernsey off of the coast of England. They begin writing letters back and forth and Juliet becomes intrigued by their stories. She travels to the island and becomes part of their community. Eventually, she falls in love in Guernsey and decides to write a book about the people who make up the literary society.
I enjoyed reading this book because I learned more about World War II and the German occupation of Guernsey. It seems that the people of Guernsey suffered terribly during World War II.

Many of you have done a fantastic job so far of meeting the reading challenge (Read and summarize 25 books in a year.) As of today, one fourth of our class (6 people!!) have met or exceeded the challenge. I would like to know what you think about the challenge. Was it useful? Did it get you reading more or maybe different genres? Do you think you will challenge yourself next year?

This helps to keep us current with our audience. Here is a picture of last year's map. Do you think we will see new places on our map, or will it stay pretty much the same?

This year you participated in a 25 book reading challenge. I created the challenge (along with Mr. Merrill and Mrs. King) because we know that the more students read, the better they do in school. Your challenge was to read 5 books ( and write a short summary) in each marking period. If you add 5 more books in the summer you will easily reach the goal of 25 books in one year, or about 1 million words!!!How have you done with the challenge so far? Please comment with how you are doing with the challenge. How many books have you read so far? Also, tell me what you think of the challenge. Has it encouraged you to read more than you usually would? Do you think it has helped you in school? Tell us what YOU think!!

April is National Poetry Month and we have been busy reading and writing poems. Last week we wrote haikus to enter in a Scholastic contest. We have also finished up our Mysteries of Harris Burdick stories. There were some challenges in this activity but we learned a lot about working collaboratively. Tuesday is our state's primary election and we have been busy collecting data. In writing this week we will be creating dialogues between two or more characters.

We have worked collaboratively (together) with Mrs. Brachbill's class from Illinois on stories to go with the Harris Burdick pictures. Please write a new article and answer the following three questions. You may add more information. What did you find difficult with this project? What things did you most enjoy? What important things did you learn as a result of the project?
I found it most difficult to get us enough computer time to work on this project. I really enjoyed seeing so many of my students share and collaborate in a mature way.Mrs. Brachbill and I learned that students sometimes feel anonymous when they are working on the computer. Sometimes they say and do things they wouldn't do if a teacher was standing there. I also learned that students really enjoy a chance to work with others and have their ideas heard.

It may not seem like we are blogging much this month and here's why:
1) We are spending the first week taking our state tests in Reading and Math...end of the month is Science
2) We are busy working with Mrs. Brachbill's class in Illinois as we cowrite stories using Chris Van Alsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick
3) We are working on collecting polling data on the upcoming Pennsylvania primary elections (April 22) We are unused to our primaries being in the spotlight. Many of the students think they too should be allowed to vote. Look here for some of their blogs explaining their reasoning
So, if our blog doesn't seem particularly busy, that is why. Hope we get back to speed in May!
Happy April everyone!

We are working collaboratively (That means together.) on a few projects. We are creating the slide show for Voices of the World on the days of the week and writing stories about the pictures in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. (If you are interested, check the links on the left.) Do you think it is important for students today to work collaboratively with students from other classrooms, schools, even countries? If you think this is important, why do you think so? If you think it isn't important, why not?

At this point in our school year, we have completed about 2 and a half of 4 quarters. This is an important time to reflect on what you have learned so far. What concept or skill have you learned so far this year that has made a difference in you, as a student? Be specific and give examples. What concept or skill would you really like to work on in the remainder of 4th grade? Again, be specific and give examples.
This year I believe that getting my students connected to blogging has been an important concept and skill. I believe that they are able to share their thoughts with one another as well as the world. I think it has been an excellent introduction for them to their internet footprint and digital citizenship. In the rest of this academic year I hope to get my students more involved in using our presentation system to present their own content. What about you?
Don't forget to answer BOTH questions.

One of the benefits of blogs is that we can share our writing and our thoughts with people all over the world. Today, you will need to view some other blogs, before you write your own. Please visit one or more of the blogs listed on the left side of this page. You may leave comments...remember, first names ONLY! After you have visited, explored, and possibly commented on other blogs, return to our blog,
Now, the topic...What do you think about the benefits of blogs? Do you like receiving feedback or comments from other people about your writing and thoughts? Do you like giving other people feedback/comments? Does this cycle of feedback help people learn?

We FINALLY got to use a class set of computers today!! It feels like it has been forever. We have had our library and computer lab closed since January for sixth grade assessment and then we had holidays... Today, we got to use some free time in the library and comment on Mrs. Griffin's most recent article. Then we started typing our second chapter for a book we are writing..."Tales of a Fourth Grade Something." It is based on Judy Blume's book, "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing." We were so excited today when we saw that some people visited our blog from Malaysia or Singapore and more people from Canada! We hope some of our visitors leave a comment on what they see.

Last week I presented a workshop at the PETE & C conference on how technology can improve a student's literacy (reading & writing.) Do you think that our use of technology this year has helped you to become a better reader/writer? Can you give specific examples?

WOW! I just spent a very exciting day here at a pre-conference conference. Everyone here is really excited about using technology in the classroom to help students learn more. I am anxious to show you some of the cool new things I learned. I hope you have a good day tomorrow and Tuesday. I'll miss seeing you all.

Now that we have finished studying about the indigenous, or native, Americans, we will begin to study the European explorers. Many of these men believed that they "discovered" something. What do you think? Can someone "discover" something that other people have known about? Do you have to be the first person to find something to "discover" it? Write an article and share your thoughts on this topic.

As a follow-up to reading and performing "The Great Kapok Tree", the students have written persusive essays telling why it is so important to save the rainforests. Listen as they share some of those reasons.

We will be writing chapters in our "Tales of a Fourth Grade Something" based upon our experiences in the Great Kapok Tree play. There is a great online graphic organizer that I was experimenting with this weekend. Here is an example of some of the things you may want to include in your narrative.

I am so-oo-o-o proud of all of your for your hard work with the play. You have done an awesome job learning lines, creating scenery and costumes, and discovery the many benefits of the rainforest. I wish I could put your play on TV!! We will be writing personal narratives about your personal accomplishment as an actor. Start thinking of the details you would like to share.

Finally, the snow that so many of you have been waiting for is here!! I was driving home tonight, and everything was so peaceful and beautiful. It reminded me of the story, "Just a Dream." I felt like I was in a dream where everything was clean and quiet.
I hope you all had a chance to sled, build a snowman, or just play in the snow. I don't know if it will last long, but I do know that it is going to be cold this weekend!!

Martin Luther King was a great man who fought for equal rights for African Americans and all people. He gave a famous speech titled "I Have a Dream." He was shot and killed almost 40 years ago. What do you know about Martin Luther King? If you could ask him one question today, What question would you ask him?

Have you noticed our clustr map down below on the right? I see that our location is growing and we seem to have had someone in the middle of our country visit our blog. When do you think someone from another continent will visit our blog?

I really enjoyed reading your comments to the story The Great Yellowstone Fire. Many of you had some interesting thoughts or questions. When you have a chance, read each other's posts and make comments. You might have an answer to their question. Feel free to start a new topic for our blog. I will be posting an assignment after the New Year!
You may post to our blog over the holidays.
Have a fantastic break!!

In the summer of 1988 Yellowstone National Park was plagued by forest fires. Normally, according to park policies, wildfires are allowed to burn as a normal part of the forest's growth and regrowth cycle. However, the summer of 1988 was unusually hot with below average rainfall. The "little" fires quickly grew into massive blazes.
Many people believe that the fires should have been put out earlier.Others disagree and say that the forest is better now than it was before.
(You might want to visit this website for more specifics.....http://www.yellowstone-natl-park.com/fire.htm#1988)
What do you think the park officials and firefighters should have done? What do you think they should do now?
Read comments of other people and add to them if you wish.
