Meet the Candidates Project

Welcome back to your blogs, fifth graders! We will be visiting our blogs for now on every week of research. You just finished our major research project, Meet the Candidates. A lot of your work has been posted into our Meet the Candidates https://meetthecandidates.wikispaces.com/">Class Wiki. Throughout the past two months you were introduced to new online technologies as you learned about electing a president. Today we would like you to write an article about your experience. Think about the following questions, and then login to your blog, and post an article. Think about the group you were in.  What was the most interesting thing you learned about the election process?

  1. Think about the technologies that you used -- it might have been Survey Monkey, Excel, Photostory, Inspiration, Video, green screens, Visual Communicator.  How did the technology help you express what you learned from our project?

  2. If you could do this project again, what would you do differently? Is there anything you think that Mrs. Kliegman should change in the project for the next election?

  3.  For Mrs. Redito's class only: We were lucky enough to videoconference with Mrs. Danz's class from Delaware. How did you feel about being able to have a political discussion with another class from another part of the USA? What was cool about it?

Have a Great Spring Break

Article posted April 18, 2008 at 10:38 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 2067

Here's a wrap-up of what we have been up to in our ICT Research Class...
Mrs. Ruggiano's class is in the process of finalizing their text for the picture book they are creating! Yesterday we put our top choices for each letter of our Children's Rights Alphabet Book into Survey Monkey. Results will be ready for our next class. We hope to raise money with our book to donate to the Kenya Education Fund.

Ms. Shah's class continues to work on their environmental research, using the "Big 6" method.

Mrs. Benzoni's class and Mrs. Taliercio's class are ready to start their explorer photostories. Images and narratives have been collected and ready for importing.

May will be an extremely busy month for all four classes as we strive to complete all of our projects before the end of the school year. Over vacations, students may 'free blog' if they wish to! Have a relaxing week off!

The Big 6 - Ms. Shah's Class

Article posted April 3, 2008 at 02:34 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 747

Last Thursday Mrs. Brusca did a wonderful lesson with your class on a research method called, "The Big 6". Each of you had to explore all the steps one must take to successfully complete a research project. Please blog about your reaction to the lesson - what did you learn about researching? Can the "Big 6" method apply to solving "everyday problems"? Can you give an example? Finally, how will you use this method to help you with your environmental research?

Everyday is Earth Day: Finding Opportunities to Take Action

Article posted February 28, 2008 at 02:08 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 726

After exploring a virtual school and noting general characteristics of a green school, you are to brainstorm five opportunities for your class to take action to help protect the environment. These opportunities must adhere to the following guidelines:

1) Action must require no money.
2) Action must be able to be done immediately.
3) Action must not require involvement of anybody outside Ms. Shah's class. (For example, addressing issues concerning exhaust from school buses would involve talking to people in charge of transportation and the bus companies. Though important, this is not something we want to get into right now.)
*Scholars can visit any three rooms
*Scholars should write down five opportunities for your class to take action.
4) You are to do this assignment in your blog.

Also, you should write about which ONE YOU WOULD BE MOST INTERESTED IN RESEARCHING and why.

Bradley Broder Visits Searingtown

Article posted February 28, 2008 at 01:53 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 656

How lucky we were that Bradley Broder from the Kenya Education Fund came to visit Searingtown! Bradley shared lots of facts about the situation in Kenya for kids. Please write a *thoughtful* blog article about what you learned. What do you feel about the situation? What do you think can or should be done? Do you have more questions? We will send our blog link to Bradley. Perhaps he will comment on some of your articles. Remember - do not include your last name or other "private" information in your article!

For your article, you will respond to the following question:
What do you hope to learn in research this year?

Happy Holidays

Article posted December 21, 2007 at 11:34 AM GMT0 • comment • Reads 447

As we wind down in our research classes this first half of the year, I want to tell all four classes how proud I am of all of you! You have each had many amazing experiences this year. All of you learned to blog, many of you worked with wikis, some of you videoconferenced with other classes, and ALL of you worked hard but had fun at the same time! Things to remember about this research class:
1. Creating your avatars
2. Setting up your blogs
3. Thinking about what you wanted to learn
4. Wikis
5. Mr. D's class: meeting Ms. Gardner's class online
6. Mrs. P's class: learning about amazing explorers
7. 5th Graders: hands, got milk?, posters & arguments

More memories still to come in January as we wrap up all of our projects. Looking forward to...
1. Native American photostories to share with our SC friends
2. Explorer wax museum
3. Voicethreads in 5th grade and the final vote.

If you happen to read this blog over vacation, feel free to post an article about anything that's on your mind! Have a happy and safe holiday and Mrs. Forte and I will see you...next year! Ha ha.

Today was an exciting day in our Library/Technology Discover program! This morning, Mrs. Forte set up a skype videoconference with our "On the Trail of the First People" project partners in South Carolina! Mr. Dugger's class got to talk to Ms. Gardner's class. It was fun just to find out about each other and say "hi!" We can't wait to meet again to share our research of our different tribes! Mr. Dugger's students had a chance to blog their reactions to meeting their new friends from South Carolina, so scroll down to their class and check it out!
