Here is what the Hunger Games is about:

The Setting: Futuristic North america. Where we live now is underwater in the books. 74 years ago,there was a series of natural disasters and wars. The rebels lost to what is called the Capitol and they now rule over 12 districts. There were 13 but one was obliberated. Each district specializes in a certain thing such as lumber,coal,luxury items,agriculture and more.  The Capitol is a big city full of weird styles ,lavish parties and they enjoy the yearly television show, The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a TV show that happens once every year. In all the 12 districts, 1 boy and 1 girl are picked to be in the Hunger Games. All 24 [sometimes 48] "tributes" are thrown into a inclosed outdoor arena to fight to death. The arenas are different every year. Capitol or district citizens can sponsor their favorite tributes to help them win. Some tributes are bloodthirsty and vicious,some  run and hide in hopes that everyone else will just kill themselves. If you win the Games, you become rich.

The Reaping is where the tributes are picked. Teens 12-18 put their name in a glass bowl in every district  once a year. When you're 12, you're name goes in once. When you're 13,it goes in twice. So on until you're name is in the bowl 7 times during you're last year. The catch is that many people have starving families and that you can put your name in extra times for food. Some districts like 1,2 ,3 and 4 are pretty rich and the kids don't starve. Those districts are the Capitol favorites. The teens in those districts actually train in a academy for the honor of representing their district. They will then volunteer in the Reaping. They are lethal,powerful killers who enjoy killing others. They also get lots of sponsors. The Cornocopia is in the middle of the arena,near the starting plates. The Cornocopia has weapons,food and survival supplies. Your starting plates are what you sand on for 60 seconds before the games begin. If you step off a minute early, the land mines will explode.

The Hunger Games book is about a 16 year old girl named Katniss Everdeen who is strong,indepent and very protective of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. She also hunts illegally. When her 12 year old sister Prim's name is called during the reaping, she volunteers. Her friend Madge gives her a mockingjay pin.She is whisked into the Capitol where she trains for the games amd wins over a few sponsors. Peeta Mellark is the boy tribute from District 12 and Katniss has a history with him. During the interviews, he confesses his love for her and she pushes him into a vase. During training, she scores a 11. Thats really good. She shot an apple out of a roasted pigs mouth. I guess the Gamemakers liked her attitude! She is extremely talented with a bow and arrow and that makes her a dangerous opponent to the Careers[ The tributes from districts 1,2,3 and 4]. When she is put in the arena she has to fight forest fires with fireballs, dehydration,tracker jackers[dangerous wasps] and the Careers. She teams up with Rue[District 11] and destroys vital survival supplies for the Careers. When there is 6 tributes left, the gamemakers change the rules. There may be two victors if they are from the same districts. This rule is beneficial for the star crossed lovers from district 12, Katniss and Peeta. Katniss finds Peeta, wounded from Cato's [district 2] sword. Peeta was part of the Careers because Cato thought Peeta would help him find Katniss the girl who outscored him in training and mocked him a few times. She helps him survive but he needs fancy medicine from Capitol labs. A sponsor, probably Haymitch, her mentor sends here sleep syrup and she drugs Peeta and sneaks out to the Cornocopia where the gamemakers are giving supplies. Clove an expert knife thrower from district 2 almost kills Katniss but Thresh[district 11] kills Clove out of anger. He thought Clove killed Rue, the twelve year old from 11. Marvell, from district one actually killed Rue. Katniss gets the medicine and Peeta is healed. They go out hunting and Peeta finds nightlock berries, a deadly berry that will kill you before it reaches your stomach. Foxface,from 5 eats the berries and dies. Peeta and Katniss go to the Cornocopia where Cato is being chased by muttations, deadly wolves. They are extremely powerful. Their most haunting attribute is they look like each of the 21 dead tributes. Cato falls over the edge of the Cornocopia and Katniss kills him out of pity. They wait to be rescued by the Capitol hovercraft but no one does. Finally the gamemaker tells them that only one victor will be allowed and that may the odds be ever in your favor. Katniss does not want to die but she can't live without Peeta becasue he means so much to her. She picks up a handful of nightlock berries and she and Peeta ar about to eat them win the gamemaker declares that there will be two victors. When they get to the Cpitol, Haymitch informs them that he Capitol didn't like the trick with the berries because they felt it mocked them. Katniss has to pretend that she did it because she was driven crazy by love. President still is unpleased. The next to books explain her battle against the Capitol to survive. and destroy the Hunger Games.
